Recent Ministry in Review GREATER NEW YORK BILLY GRAHAM CRUSADE Held at historic Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, the Greater New York Crusade saw crowds totaling 230,000 attend over the three days of meetings, with an average of nearly 2,800 responding each evening to the evangelist’s invitation to make a commitment to Christ. Mr. Graham’s historic respect for and engagement with the media, and speculation that it was his last crusade, brought immense coverage, with more than 700 journalists credentialed for the event. The crowd of 90,000 for the final meeting on Sunday brought the crusade to national and international attention. More than 1,400 churches representing 82 denominations participated in the yearlong preparations, mobilizing nearly 20,000 volunteers from their congregations. Reflective of the diverse New York community, with more than 130 different language groups within walking distance of the park, the crusade was translated into a total of 20 different languages – as many as 13 each night. The 140-foot high Unisphere — the well-known symbol of the 1964 World’s Fair held at Corona Park — reminded attendees of the spiritual unity of the participating churches and the potential of this crusade for global impact as individuals from every race, denomination, and social strata turned their hearts and lives over to Christ. GREATER LOS ANGELES BILLY GRAHAM CRUSADE Billy Graham’s ministry came full circle as his Greater Los Angeles Crusade, held November 18-21 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, ended 55 years to the weekend from his historic “Canvas Cathedral” tent revival in downtown L.A. that launched his ministry into worldwide prominence in 1949. Crowds averaging over 73,600 attended each meeting, including 90,000 teenagers for “The Concert for Our Generation” – the largest audience for a non-sporting event at “America’s Stadium.” Of these, an average of more than 3,150 individuals each night came forward at Mr. Graham’s invitation to make a commitment to Christ, including a total of 1,560 from the various language groups. More than 1,400 churches representing 100 denominations participated in the yearlong preparations, mobilizing thousands of volunteers from their congregations. Simultaneous interpretation was provided to 14 language groups per night and a total of 26 – more than any other crusade Mr. Graham has ever held. HEART OF AMERICA BILLY GRAHAM CRUSADE Originally set for June, the increased preparation time allowed the community to mobilize volunteers from nearly 1,200 area churches representing 84 denominations. Of a total attendance of nearly 155,000, more than 8,600 individuals came forward at the evangelist’s invitation to make a commitment to Christ. The Heart of America Crusade reached a five-state region with the Gospel message, with many coming from as far away as Nebraska, Oklahoma and Illinois to attend the meetings. This was the first domestic crusade that America’s Beloved Gospel Singer, George Beverly Shea, was unable to attend, due to his recent recovery from a heart attack. Significant Recent National Ministry National Day of Prayer and Remembrance, Sept. 14, 2001 In perhaps one of the most high-profile sermons of his life, Mr. Graham was asked to deliver the main message at the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance called by President Bush following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center. As every network was carrying live coverage, as well as many international outlets, more people across the country and around the world may have heard Mr. Graham preach the Gospel than ever before. While providing comfort to those who had lost loved ones, as well as to a grieving nation, Mr. Graham preached clearly the Gospel message of salvation through Christ, and the possibility of being certain about one’s future. Amsterdam 2000, July 29-Aug. 6, 2000 The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association organized and hosted an international conference for itinerant evangelists July 29-Aug. 6, 2000 at the RAI Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, focusing on new strategies and methods of evangelism for the 21st Century. Over 10,000 evangelists from more than 200 countries and territories—three-fourths of which are developing nations—attended 900 plenary and teaching sessions conducted by some of the world’s top Christian leaders. Ministry in the Wake of the Columbine High Tragedy and Kennedy Death Mr. Graham once again took on the role of America’s pastor, ministering to a bereaved nation through a round of national media appearances following the tragic deaths of several teens in the April, 1999, shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., and again after the death of John F. Kennedy, Jr., in July. Publishing of his Memoirs The mass-market paperback version of Mr. Graham’s memoirs, “Just As I Am,” was released in January 1998. In this his 23rd book, Mr. Graham reflected on his life, including nearly 60 years of ministry around the world. Published by HarperCollins/Zondervan, the paperback quickly jumped to the top of the best-seller lists, as did the hardback book’s original release in April 1997. |
