Tame Your Tongue

February 19, 2013

“If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
–James 1:26

The problems of the world could be solved overnight if men could get victory over their tongues. Suppose there was no anger, no profanity, no lying, no grumbling or complaining; suppose there were no dirty stories told, no unjust criticism—what a different world this would be! The Bible teaches that a man who can control his tongue can control his whole personality. We should ask ourselves three questions before we speak: Is it true? Is it kind? Does it glorify Christ? If we would always think before we speak, there would be much less evil speaking, and there would soon be a spiritual awakening that would sweep the church in America.

Prayer for the day

May I remember how important it is to keep a check on my tongue. I pray that my conversation this day will be pleasing in Your sight, Lord.

Thank you for sharing this devotion. The Bible says the tongue can be like fire. I hope the world will soon wake up and realize that all of us will answer to the Lord someday, so we must think before we speak, May God Bless You!

Your uncontrolled tongue can cause irreparable damage. Think first, then speak.

I would love to meet Billy Graham in person and really am thankful for the work he has done for Jesus. I have a book full of photos of his crusades and ministry and could hardly put it down until I finished it. Very inspiring!

Ben says 2.19.2011, 3:24 p.m.

We should always submit to God and bring the flesh to obedience and allow God to use us as a vessel. Then the word will be the word of God and for His glory. Die to self each day...

Your devontions are very important to our everyday lives. It reminds us how important our walk with Jesus is! How His love is so true!

marie says 2.19.2011, 11:15 a.m.

God spoke the world and everything in it into existence. What you speak from your mouth creates in your life and those around you in your world, your family, church, commnity. Words have power, create dominion and express a spirit. When we pray, when we praise think what happens in the spiritual realm. When I or someone I know is going thru trial or depression my encouragement is to stress how inportant it is to verbally, out loud, sing, pray, praise, quote the truth of Gods word. Rather then keep repeating your woes. Besides confession, we must speak as an act of our will, not according to our flesh, our emotions, speak Gods promises louder and more repeated then your mind. Battle and deceiving heart, think about the words you've received through out your life. Good or bad that have stuck with you and infuenced you for good or bad. Words are blessings or curses.

Ernie says 2.19.2011, 10:59 a.m.

Really important message for me today. I tend to reply in snaps or retorts to people just so they don't get the better of me. I'm going to try 'silence' to be 'golden'

sheryl says 2.19.2011, 08:50 a.m.

This is so true, its so easy to speak to fast and then find your self praying asking for forgiveness of saying something you wish you hadn't. Once you let the feathers out of a feather pillow you can never pick them all up again, they're gone with the wind and the things we say we can't take them back. Oh Lord help me with this tongue of mine, forgive me my not so nice words yesterday ..amen

Gerry says 2.19.2011, 07:06 a.m.

Words can destroy or words can uplift. Which type of words do you think God would have you speak. Pray today that God will guide your tongue.

sam says 2.19.2011, 04:54 a.m.

There will be only a few who will qualify the test of truth, kindness and glorification of Christ. Let's pray that we pass.

Sharon says 2.19.2011, 03:32 a.m.
