Billy Graham's Daily Devotion

A God of Justice

December 19, 2013

What joy there is for anyone whose sins are no longer counted against him by the Lord.
–Romans 4:8 (TLB)

A number of years ago I was stopped for driving too fast in a speed zone, and in the courtroom I pleaded guilty. The judge was not only friendly but embarrassed for me to be in his court. The fine was ten dollars. If he had let me go free, it would have been inconsistent with justice. The penalty had to be paid either by me or someone else! Judgment is consistent with love. A God of love must be a God of justice. It is because God loves that He is just. His justice balances His love and makes His acts of both love and justice meaningful.

God could not consistently love men, if He did not provide for the judgment of evil-doers. His punishment of the evil-doer and His separation of the righteous is a manifestation of God’s great love. We must always look at the cross on the dark background of judgment. It was because God’s love for man was so intense that He gave His Son, so that man would not have to face judgment.

Prayer for the day

You are the Supreme Judge, almighty God, and I thank You that even though I did not deserve forgiveness, my judgment was paid by Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

God has and will always love us, and in turn, we must love Him. By following his commands is one way we show our love to the One who loved us first.

Father without you in our lives we are but a wandering cloud of dust. I pray you open my eyes and clear my ears so as to give me vision to see thru the dust and the hearing to take your word and cement it into my heart. Give me strength dear God.

John says 12.19.2012, 3:12 p.m.

The most precious Gift of all, the LORD JESUS CHRIST! (please pray for my children and even me, as we deal with Ephesians 6 issues, in Jesus Holy Name, Amen).

Joe says 12.19.2012, 08:43 a.m.

Amen.

Gerry says 12.19.2012, 07:01 a.m.

How do you properly thank someone who gives up their most precious possession for you. "Thank-you" seems inadequate for such a huge sacrifice. However giving your heart and soul to God Almighty is a very good start.

Jordan says 12.19.2011, 3:59 p.m.

Thank you God for sending Jesus, your only son to die for our sins. I love and thank you for everything you have done for me.

"Look at the cross on the dark background of judgment." How great thou art to carry the burden I so rightfully deserve. Thank you, Jesus. I owe you more than I can ever imagine.

Trish says 12.19.2011, 1:51 p.m.

Father I thank you for being the just Judge. You would never punish us beyond that which we deserve. May you continue to order the footstep of your children for who the Father loves He chastises. May God continue to Bless BGEA!

I Know God-Jesus Christ Is A Righteous Judge And Judgment Day Hasn't Come Not Yet But I Been A Christian For Almost 25 Years Now And I'm Repenting Each And Every Day For My Sexual Sins. No Offense To God Or Anyone, It's Hard But I Know God Will Forgive Me And Allow Enough Time To Help Me Repent.Thank You!

Dear Billy,I went to hear you in Tunbridge Wells and have read your biography. I read the secret of happiness and think that we can only find it by serving God with a clear conscience and loving our neighbor as ourselves. I listen to Premier a lot and enjoy learning new songs. I also love Songs of Praise especially at this time of year. It was sad when you lost Ruth but a comfort to know she is in glory where Jesus is all in all. It's lovely to know that Franklin is following in your footsteps.I agree that a corrupt society will have to suffer God's judgment but see the Lord working in remarkable ways today especially now that we have the internet to contact people all over the world. Where I live we seem to be having a lot of foreigners who can take the gospel back to their own countries just like in Acts.I pray that you will know God's richest blessing and give you a joyful Christmas with your family and a peaceful and fulfilling new year.Yours with God's eternal love, David Cooke

We should all get down and pray and Thank the Lord for what he sacrificed for us because we are mostly to selfish to do for others. I do Thank you lord for all I have because I know it comes from you and Thank you for letting your son die on the cross for ME and others.

Anil says 12.19.2010, 10:35 a.m.

Compassion and love from the Father is shown when he judges us. As a Father he may not like what we have done but he will always love us.

Who will be embarrased in God's court?

Sam says 12.19.2010, 06:54 a.m.

I thank him for bringing the righteous, meaning He is true God of LOVE.

Gerry says 12.19.2010, 04:46 a.m.

Christ'a death at Calvary is without a doubt, the ultimate display of love and forgiveness. The King of all Kings died a horrid death, willingly, because of his extraordinary love for us and his father. I am continually amazed and very deeplyly thankful every time I think of that incredible act of Love from the greatest man to ever set foot on this earth. It is the ultimate honour to be a member of God's Holy Family and it only happened because of Christ's atoning sacrificial death. I would ask the Holy Spirit of God to bring my deepest thanks to our Heavenly Father and his Holy Son on my behalf .

chichi says 12.19.2010, 03:50 a.m.

A great sacrifice indeed. Thank God for Jesus..

Dwayne says 12.19.2010, 00:33 a.m.

We would be so unworthy on our own strength or ability. God would turn his back on us just as He did to our Savior, His Son, as He hung on the cross with all our inequities upon Him.

mick says 12.17.2010, 10:53 a.m.

What a sacrifice for such as us!
