Symptoms of Guilt

September 25, 2013

Cleanse me from this guilt. Let me be pure again.
–Psalm 51:2 (TLB)

Guilt is a prominent word among psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, and ministers too. The dictionary calls guilt “the act or state of having done a wrong or committed an offense.” The symptoms of guilt are many, but the root cause is one.

We have broken the moral law of the universe as expressed in the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount. So we have a sense of guilt.

This guilt causes a variety of psychological problems such as insecurity, tension, hunger for approval, struggles for recognition. A sense of guilt, some psychiatrists point out, is as necessary as a sense of pain. We need both in order to keep us from getting hurt.

Prayer for the day

Your Holy Spirit touches my heart and makes me conscious of my guilt. Forgive me, Lord.

When I make any kind of sin, rather large or small, I know that I wrong and ask God for forgiveness. He is always there for us, we need to be within His sights, not our own.

Guilt comes from within. You do not have to get caught to feel guilty. The Holy Spirit will convict you.

Psalm 103:12 says "As far as the east is from the west so far has He removed our sin". If God removes our sin from us we should remember it no more. Since God forgives us we need to forgive ourselves. Guilt is a tool of satan.

When mentally healthy people do wrong they feel a sense of guilt ........ even if they claim to have no religious beliefs. God has placed this "sense" in all of us. It sears our conscience until we do something about it. We are blessed as Believers to be able to come before our Holy God and confess our sins knowing full well our Heavenly Father will be faithful to forgive us. We learn and grow from our mistakes. Thank God for his Holy Son's Blood at Calvary and his Love, Mercy and Forgiveness.
