The Power of Words

September 17, 2013

The tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage it can do . . .
–James 3:5 (TLB)

There is a story of a woman in England who came to her vicar with a troubled conscience. The vicar knew her to be a habitual gossip—she had maligned nearly everyone in the village. “How can I make amends?” she pleaded. The vicar said, “If you want to make peace with your conscience, take a bag of goose feathers and drop one on the porch of each one you have slandered.” When she had done so, she came back to the vicar and said, “Is that all?” “No,” said the wise old minister, “you must go now and gather up every feather and bring them all back to me.” After a long time the woman returned without a single feather. “The wind has blown them all away,” she said. “My good woman,” said the vicar, “so it is with gossip. Unkind words are easily dropped, but we can never take them back again.”

Prayer for the day

Might my words about another be ones that are spoken in the spirit of Your loving kindness, Father.

As evil as it is, like the proverbs say, it goes down so smoothly when we are gossiping and then afterwards..yikes. God help us! I am deffinitely fighting this thing called gossip everyday and it just gets me each day some how. I will win!

My daughter and her husband have been unable to have children, now they are adopting a biracial child, so she call her grandmother to tell her wonderful news. But her grandmother broke her heart when she said "what is wrong with you"( she is racist )

People who talk behind others backs are just as bad as those that are prejudiced. Many times, this is what starts riots and even wars. We must keep an open mind towards others, and let Jesus be in our hearts towards others.

When angry , choose carefully how you respond. Your words and actions should represent who you are.......

Loving and kind words are what Jesus used to deal with people. We should strive to talk to others in this same manner. A soft answer turns away wrath.

We must think before we speak because we will all answer to God for the wrong things we have said to others. May God Bless All of You!

Hurtful words are sources of disgrace to those who indulge in them. When they are caught in the act, they turn pale. Never say what you cannot defend!

I keep these scriptures close to my heart: Proverbs 18:21- Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it[for death or life]; Proverbs 16:24- Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.; Psalm 141:3- Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.

I knew my mothers relationship was not like many others I had witnessed as a child but still I hung on hoping I was wrong. One day when I was about 23, my Mother said these words to me. I don't know why I was never able to love you but I was and am not. Pick up your trash and get out I never want to see you again. The trash was my two kids her grand children. I have tried a couple of times over the years praying her attitude would change but each time it had not. I am 62 now and live 15 miles away hoping one day she will call and I do not want to be to far away. God has blessed me much with a wonderful husband children and grandchild I keep praying he will soften my mothers heart.

Guard your tongue because countless families and friends have not spoken to each other ever again after a few hurtfull words were spoken in anger. When a potentially explosive situation presents itself ask Holy God for his divine guidance to help lovingly calm the situation before the damage is done.
