Unspeakable Joy

August 26, 2013

And the disciples were called Christians . . .
–Acts 11:26

In the third century Cyprian, the Bishop of Carthage, wrote to his friend Donatus, “It is a bad world, Donatus, an incredibly bad world. But I have discovered in the midst of it a quiet and holy people, who have learned a great secret. They have found a joy which is a thousand times better than any of the pleasures of our sinful life. They are despised and persecuted, but they care not. They are masters of their souls. They have overcome the world. These people, Donatus, are Christians . . . and I am one of them.” If you have repented of your sins and have received Christ as Savior, then you, too, are one of them.

Prayer for the day

Today, Lord God, I remember all those Christians who have gone before me and thank You for the inspiration of their memory. May I never take for granted the heritage I have in Christ Jesus.

I love the Lord for His love mercy he gave, for you and I on that old blood stained wooden cross. Just like a good carpenter he builds whole entire home- houses, now don't you reckon you can say He's the boss.

Billy Graham led me to the Lord as a kid and my mother led me to the gift of Faith. For both I am eternally grateful. These two people have had the greatest affect on my life and I thank them for their gifts.

The greatest name we can be called is a Christian because it means we are in Christ our eternal Savior.

It is the highest honor and privilege to be called a Christian . To be a follower of Jesus Christ and the principles found in God's Holy Word can be difficult in a fallen world .......but well worth the eternal reward we will receive.

The most important decision of my life is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. As long as live in the Spirit and not in the flesh, I have the Holy Spirit living through me to glorify God. PTL!

Gerry says 8.28.2011, 07:13 a.m.

Many have been blessed by God throughout time. We can enjoy the same blessings today if we would only try harder to follow his biblical instructions.

The LORD has used Billy Graham so much in my life through his messages. like the early Christians we have peace in the face of persecution especially in Nigeria were Christians are being persecuted daily in some states and communities.

Chukwuemeka says 8.26.2011, 11:23 a.m.

Today's devotion is quite challenging! It is high time we come out from our comfort zones. These brethren wouldn't having been called "Christians" had it been they remained in their comfort zones. May God help us to amend our ways before it's too late!!

raymond says 8.26.2011, 11:07 a.m.

May GODS peace be with everyone

Tom says 8.26.2011, 10:25 a.m.

How wonderful it is to see the evidence of the life changing work of the Holy Spirit through out history. Unexplainable peace and Joy in our Savior Jesus Christ is ours. God Bless BGEA and all the folks there reading the Gospel around the world.

Keri says 8.26.2011, 07:17 a.m.

Not one of Jesus disciples was ever comfortable. For every person living in comfort, lets ask ourselves if we really are living God's design for our life? Is comfort your idol? So many live inside the boundaries of comfort and never step outside because of fear. The fear of persecution is one reason. Based on scripture, looks like stepping out is pretty much required as a disciple -and discipleship is our purpose.

Magnhild says 8.26.2011, 05:19 a.m.

Thank You Lord for the joy you have brought into to my life!

Joane says 8.26.2011, 05:19 a.m.

Today, Lord, I thank You for the inspiration we may have because of your servant Billy Graham.

mick says 8.25.2011, 11:37 a.m.

If we can only remember and savor that persecution has always been the badge of a true Christian!
