Feeling the Hurts of Others

February 12, 2013

He that loveth his brother abideth in the light . . .
–1 John 2:10

This age in which we live could hardly be described as conducive to a sensitiveness of the needs of others. We have developed a veneer of sophistication and hardness. Abraham Lincoln once said, characteristically, “I am sorry for the man who can’t feel the whip when it is laid on the other man’s back.” Much of the world is calloused and indifferent toward mankind’s poverty and distress. This is due largely to the fact that for many people there has never been a rebirth. The love of God has never been shed abroad in their hearts. Many people speak of the social gospel as though it were separate and apart from the redemptive Gospel. The truth is: there is only one Gospel. We must be redeemed, we must be made right with God before we can become sensitive to the needs of others. Divine love, like a reflected sunbeam, shines down before it radiates out. Unless our hearts are conditioned by the Holy Spirit to receive and reflect the warmth of God’s compassion, we cannot love our fellowmen as we ought.

Prayer for the day

Help me to feel another person’s hurt and be concerned, Father, so that I may shed the light of Your love in an uncaring world.

Yes, when we harden our heart to the unchion of the Holy Spirit, the voice and love of God gets weaker and weaker, and our love for others gets weaker and weaker. We must choose to let the Holy Spirit come in. I have trouble with the word condition.

Dear Jesus, teach me to love and let my heart reach out to others who are in need. Bless me and love me, Jesus. Help me to see the truth.

Sharing a smile, or an encouraging, kind word can be one way of helping others. The Bible says that "a kind word can cheer up the heart." Proverbs 12:25

I am reminded of the bible verse, The poor man cried and the Lord saved him out of all his troubles. We need to portray that agape love daily

Lord, Help me be sensitive to the pain of those around me, and help me to respond to their needs with a compassionate heart.

I've observed it time and again, it's true that without GOD, the unsaved have enormous difficulty thinking truly beyond their own selves. We NEED the Holy Spirit. Thank You JESUS.

Without God's Love in our heart it will be very difficult to truly feel the pain that others are enduring.

Joe says 2.12.2013, 07:19 a.m.

Amen.

Like the prayer for today, very beautiful.

I am not sure it really is a veneer. There is a certain competitiveness to life that does favor the stronger, smarter, more sophisticated, more capable. This is true even within churches. We can't feel because there's too much to take in.

If you truly love Jesus and are in his word daily than and only than will you be able to look at others as a brother or sister and than feel their pain. Thank you Jesus for your love.

Bob says 2.12.2012, 07:09 a.m.

draw close to Jesus, listen to Him, As He comforts you, then you will be able to comfort others.

Gerry says 2.12.2012, 06:45 a.m.

We all want compassion from God in our time of need. We ought also be willing to show compassion to others when they need it.

We must love our neighbors just as Christ loves us

The Bible teaches, how the Lord Jesus moved with compassion, towards the needy people. My Loving heavenly Father, Through the Holy Spirit, Give me Your loving heart to give hope to those in need and make me a source of light in this dark world, Amen!

When a person gives glory to God after a good deed is done to them by us, we get brownie points in heaven's scroll of life.

Terhemba says 2.12.2011, 07:44 a.m.

May the spirit of God give us a kind heart to love and care for our fellow humans... We cannot love God without loving our neighbours.

Gerry says 2.12.2011, 06:52 a.m.

Do not permit your heart to harden toward the suffering and pain of others. Jesus demonstrated the perfect example of how to treat those who are hurting. Let your compasionate light shine on them.

mick says 2.11.2011, 12:03 a.m.

We feel that hurt is acceptable as long as its the other guy!
