The Real You

January 20, 2013

For he knoweth our frame . . .
–Psalm 103:14

It is significant that our first astronauts, while being trained for their moon flights, were required to give twenty answers to the query, “Who are you?” Take the same test yourself. When you have made your list and run out of things to add, ask yourself if you have truly answered. Do you really know who you are? Scientists agree that our desperate search leads all humans to seek heroes and to imitate others, to “paste bits and pieces of other people on ourselves.” We make love as some actor would. We play golf in the style of Jack Nicklaus. Part of this process is natural, for we learn by imitating others. The tragedy is that the person we assemble is not genuine. “Who am I?” you cry as you roam the world looking for yourself. Consider this: there are three of you. There is the person you think you are. There is the person others think you are. There is the person God knows you are and can be through Christ.

Prayer for the day

Lord, help me to break through the façade and know myself as You do.

O LORD, Thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid Thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it (Psalms 139:1, 5-6). Holy Spirit, Show me my nothingness, Amen!

The vessel that He made of clay was marred in the hand of the Potter: so He made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the Potter to make it (Jeremiah 18:4). Thank You LORD, You turn the ugliest thing in my life into a thing of Beauty...! Amen!

David says 1.20.2011, 10:02 p.m.

I know and like parts of me, and I deeply regret some of me. More than anything, I desire to walk and talk with my God and to share in his thoughts and his heart, and to be one with him, and live like him. Only God gives me the satisfaction and peace I crave, and only he fills what is otherwise left empty. I pray that God will remove the obstacles I erect to slow him from getting closer, and that with his help I can eventually walk as one with him, in this life and into the next.

sam says 1.20.2011, 11:10 a.m.

Seek Jesus and learn who you really are and what you can become. I love you Lord Jesus. God bless you Billy Graham for this devotional.

Nokuthula Mkalipi says 1.20.2011, 01:03 a.m.

Honestly, we may think we know who we are but it's only until (at some point in life) we meet our Saviour that we would really know who we are. Because we are nothing, except in Him.

Christine Haiyan Jin says 1.19.2011, 02:59 a.m.

Dear Lord God Yaweh, Lord Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit, Thank thee for having this opportunity for me to confess sins so that my somewhat Christ centered living could go on. Thank thee for all thy grace and salvation bestowed over thy unworthy of death sinner and thy child me, so that I can continue to serve thee, magnify thee and express thee glorify thee in an unworthy manner and at the same time rescue the perishing and care for the dying here in Shenzhen China. In the name of the true God I confess sins on behalf of the whole world and thank Him for all.
