How could Jesus have been both a man and also God? After all, if Jesus was truly human, wouldn't that have made Him a sinner -- and yet God can't sin, can He? Maybe it doesn't make any difference, but I've always been curious about this. — P.D.J.
One of the Bible's greatest truths is that Jesus Christ wasn't like any other person who has ever lived -- and the reason is because He was both fully human and fully divine. The Bible says, "He is the image of the invisible God.... For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him" (Colossians 1:15,19).
Can we understand this? No, not fully; our minds are too limited, and this truth is too profound. And yet we can understand as much as we need to -- because when we look at Jesus' life and ministry, we see both His human and His divine natures working together. Because He was human, He sometimes got tired or hungry -- and eventually His body would die. But because He was also divine, He lived a sinless life and was able to do miracles -- and eventually rise from the dead. He was both fully man and fully God -- and His life bears witness to that great truth.
Why is this important? It's important because our greatest need is to have our sins forgiven -- and this could only happen if a sinless Savior took our sins and our judgment upon Himself. No mere human could become the sacrifice for sin that we need; only Christ -- the sinless Son of God -- could do this.
Don't ignore Jesus, and don't leave Him out of your life. Instead, realize who He is: the sinless Son of God who gave His life for you. Commit your life to Him today.
