Selections from Ruth Bell Graham’s Poetry

December 23, 2010 - During her lifetime, Ruth Bell Graham wrote dozens of poems. Here are three of them.

Selections from Ruth Bell Graham’s Poetry

The Man I Prayed For
Dear God, I prayed, all unafraid
(as we’re inclined to do),
I do not need a handsome man
but let him be like You;
I do not need one big and strong
nor yet so very tall,
nor need he be some genius,
or wealthy, Lord, at all;
but let his head be high, dear God,
and let his eye be clear,
his shoulders straight, whate’er his state,
whate’er his earthly sphere;
and let his face have character,
a ruggedness of soul,
and let his whole life show, dear God,
a singleness of goal;
then when he comes
(as he will come)
with quiet eyes aglow,
I’ll understand that he’s the man
I prayed for long ago.

Only You
Dusty my soul tonight.
Earth has been dear.
Bewildered, I come to You,
Father God, hear.
Idols that charm me,
dreams that allure,
pains that alarm me,
suspense to endure,
memories that linger,
thoughts that ensnare,
a heart that is aching,
all crumpled by care,
unsatisfied, restless,
scarce able to pray—
everything, everything
take it away.
Only You,
none but You,
Jesus alone:
ashes the rest to me,
songs with a groan,
take them each one away—
mind not my tears—
lift me above this earth’s
joys and its fears,
give me Yourself alone—
nothing beside—
so will I be with You,
content,
satisfied!

Time to Adore
And when I die
I hope my soul ascends
slowly, so that I
may watch the earth receding
out of sight,
its vastness growing smaller as I rise,
savoring its recession with delight.
Anticipating joy is itself a joy.
And joy unspeakable
and full of glory needs more
than “in the twinkling of an eye,”
more than “in a moment.”

Lord, who am I to disagree?
It’s only we have much to leave behind;
so much ... Before.
These moments of transition
will, for me,
be time to adore.

I especially like her journal entry reproduced in Billy's 'Just as I am', about how a mother should treat her children. RBG, you're such an amazing woman. Thank you for living the life God gave you.

I have always loved Ruth's poetry and read it at night when I can't sleep to quiet my soul. My granddaughter was married Saturday and I posted Ruth's poem 'The Man I prayed For', onto her Facebook as it pertained so much to what she has experienced.

Thank you so much for sharing her work! I am about to have "the talk" with my daughter and I plan on sharing "The Man I Prayed For" with her now too!

I too read 'the man I prayed for' in a Reader's Digest magazine when I was around 16 years old. I am now aged 67 and I have lived with 'that man' for 45 years. Thank God for Ruth's words - they inspired my faith.

Her life touches me. A time to adore...just shows how much she loved her family and friends and life itself. How beautiful.

"The man I prayed for" was read to me around the time I met my husband. Now I am reading it to my daughters! The Lord is kind to give us "Mothers in Israel" like RBG. What a blessing her life and legacy is.

The poem, "The Man I Prayed For" was read by me as a teenager. I believe it was in a Reader's Digest magazine. The words have stayed in my heart all these years. I am passing it on to my teen-age granddaughters in the hope and prayer that they will hold it in their hearts when searching for a husband. This poem had a tremendous affect on my life. God bless the Graham family, and I thank them for always holding on to the Bible and its teachings.
