I know we're supposed to trust God when something isn't going well, but it's hard to do when we pray and pray, and yet nothing seems to happen. How can I learn to trust God and completely commit my problems to Him? — K.F.
Over the years, I've discovered that the key to learning to trust God is simply to realize who He really is: the sovereign, all-powerful, all-loving God of the universe.
As long as we look only at ourselves and our problems, we'll always have trouble trusting God -- because in the back of our minds is always the thought that the solution must be up to us. But we know our inadequacies, and we also know we can't see into the future or know what difficulties we may encounter. Even if we convince ourselves that we can overcome our problems on our own, doubts still linger in our hearts. The Bible warns, "He who trusts in himself is a fool" (Proverbs 28:26).
But when we understand who God is, then we'll begin to realize that we can trust our problem -- and our lives -- into His hands. If He could create the world... if He could raise Jesus from the dead... can't He be trusted with our problems? Jeremiah's words should be engraved on our hearts: "Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power.... Nothing is too hard for you" (Jeremiah 32:17).
Begin by trusting Jesus Christ for your salvation. Then begin each day by committing it to Him, and asking Him to help you trust Him in everything. God loves you, and once that truth takes root in your heart and mind, your life will never be the same.
