Franklin Graham Statement on the Pending Execution of Iranian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani

September 30, 2011 - BOONE, N.C. -- Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse issued the following statement:

Franklin Graham Statement on the Pending Execution of Iranian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani

This week Christian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani faced an Iranian court for his third and final "opportunity" to recant his Christian faith. When he refused to do so, he was sentenced to death for apostasy, a judgment that may be carried out at any time.

It is unfathomable to most thinking people that a person in the 21st Century can be put to death simply for espousing a faith that differs from that of his nation's ruling powers. Belief cannot be prescribed or proscribed. Faith is the most basic, fundamental right of every human being.

While this kind of religious intolerance from the Islamic government and so-called justice system in Iran (Sharia Law) doesn't surprise me, the initial virtual silence of the international community does. A man is sentenced to be killed for the "crime" of a sincere belief in Jesus Christ - a sentence in clear violation of international law. So where is the international outrage?

The international community is complicit in Iran's outrage if our leaders remain silent. House Speaker Boehner was one of the first leaders here in the U.S. to speak out against the atrocity of the Iranian court's sentence against Pastor Nadarkhani. The White House has now issued a statement condemning the sentence and calling for Nadarkhani's immediate release. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and others on the world stage should take immediate action to condemn the sentence imposed on Pastor Nadarkhani. We, as U.S. citizens, must join our voices to continue to press world leaders to take action. Pastor Nadarkhani's life hangs in the balance.

Matthew's Gospel tells us, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Pastor Nadarkhani will certainly be blessed for his unwavering faith when he stands
before God. But I hope that Christians across America will join me in praying for his rescue in this life as well.

Our Heavenly Father Lord God, will release Pastor Youcef immediately from prison, no questions asked and on Oct,5 2011 he is set free and bonds and chains are set from his feet and the will of Jesus Christ's blood shall be known to that whole Islam Government that they have no more power and there law will prove to have no more dominion and sees to exist as a power or whole! And in the all mighty Lord Jesus Christ we pray Amen

Ferly says 10.3.2011, 11:58 p.m.

We will continue to pray for Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani and for his release from this outrageous action. It may be that the Lord will intervene to set Youcef free as God did Peter and other apostles when the devil threw some of them in prison for their testimony and witness for Christ ... We hope that those who hear of the persecution that often takes place by religious tyranny and wickedness will become better informed and aware of the true nature of the radical form of Islam; a religion of hate used by Islamic extremest to oppress and kill those faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ, the only true Sovereign Lord and God. Be loved in Christ, stay the course; remain unmovable in the truth and so stand by God's grace. Remember the words of the Lord Jesus who foresaw these times saying, "Be not afraid of those who kill the body but can do nothing after that; rather be afraid of the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell". Pray for those who persecute God's people, perchance some will repent and be saved from God's coming wrath which is not far off in our times. God bless.

Joel says 10.3.2011, 2:52 p.m.

For those who want to make a plea to the Iranian ambassador go to the site for Christian Solidarity Worldwide and there are instructions how to do this. I looked at Rick Warren's tweet about this and there is a website on his message that leads you directly to the page instructing how to do make the plea. Look at http://bit.lylmQ0FDv. Thanks.

My wife and I just got to read this now. Very saddening indeed. And who knows many silent other Christians suffering same fate in other climes. Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered. We have prayed for Pastor Nadarkhani. It is well.

Let us pray that God will make a way for Pastor Nadarkhan, his family and friends that his brothers and sisters all over the world are praying for him and his family and praising God for giving him courage to stand up for Christs. It is true that Christ will not deny those who choose not to deny Him. In a country where the freedom of religion is curtailed, Pastor Nadarkhan has chosen to practice his freedom through Christ.

William says 10.1.2011, 08:58 a.m.

I rejoice in this steadfast hero and pray that his faith will fail not. Let us also pray for his family, friends and others around the world that The True and Living God will use this event to glorify Himself in their lives as well and that many will trust in The Lord Jesus Christ.

Father I pray for the release of Pastor Nadarkhani. And thank you for hearing my prayer!

Pastor Rahman says 10.1.2011, 08:26 a.m.

Pastor Nadarkhani as Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna did, has accepted to bear the real cost of following Jesus. I am very certain Jesus will not deny him since he did not deny his savior, Jesus Christ. May the finger of God arise for the salvation of his life. AMEN!!!

Kim says 10.1.2011, 08:06 a.m.

God Bless Pastor Nadarkhani, for his courage and strength in the one and only true GOD!!! I will be praying for his safety and release. Let us all pray that we have this kind of courage and strength when were faced with the choice of either standing for Christ or not.

JOSE says 10.1.2011, 06:48 a.m.

We just do not need to express, and publicly act against this clear violation of civil rights, but also we have to join our praying force to God, He will deliver Pastor Nadarkhani from human Justice and bless him with God's unending Love.We have the power of the social media to force changes, we have seen how the social media has changed political power recently. We do have access to that power to show our support to Pastor Nadarkhani and our commitment to love Jesus and never deny Him.

Sura, says 10.1.2011, 06:35 a.m.

Let us join in prayer that God will deliver Pastor Nadarkhani from the possible execution just as St. Peter was from the jail while he was waiting for a death penalty for his faith in Jesus Christ. It is a matter of great regret for someone to be condemned to death for his/her faith even as the Iranian government has given the verdict. Sad indeed!

Bessie says 10.1.2011, 04:54 a.m.

My PRAY IS FOR YOU AND THE PASTOR. GOD IS STILL IN CONTROL.

joy says 10.1.2011, 04:32 a.m.

wow....

Joan says 10.1.2011, 03:20 a.m.

I agree with you and my heart is sad as I continually read of the actions of Islamic nations that feel they have the right to take the life of one of their own ciitizens for simply believing in a different faith. It shows a great fear and insecurity in their own faith. I will post this message on my FB and send it to Politicians in Australia.

Ben says 10.1.2011, 02:39 a.m.

Christianity is becoming more and more under the attack of the devil and hid demons. We as Christians will have to stick together and stop moaning about nitty gritty stuff and praise God and thank Him for His blood on the Cross. Set each other free, forgive ,forget and pray for one another. Everyday life is full of choices and my choice is to set my enemies free and pray for them on a daily bases. Praise God for he is in control. Thank You God for sending Jesus and thank You Jesus because You came for all of us.

Jun cachin says 10.1.2011, 02:28 a.m.

Yes, indeed I am with you in praying for Pastor Nadarkhani. I speak God's mighty intervention! In JESUS name!

David says 10.1.2011, 02:20 a.m.

Deuteronomy 33 v27. The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms, and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee, and shall say, Destroy them. Trust in the Lord and don't despair, in all things our God is the conquerer and he shall not be mocked.

Mari says 10.1.2011, 01:25 a.m.

We as Christians need to unite in support of releasing Pastor Nadarkhani, remember how a group prayed for Peter and the chains fell off. He walked out. Let this same miracle happen for Nadarkhani, CHRISTIANS UNITE IN PRAYER.

David says 10.1.2011, 01:13 a.m.

Let us pray, that God may show His miracle. Islam is in hand of God as Egypt and Pharaoh when Israel under their grips.

Emma says 10.1.2011, 01:13 a.m.

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, our Savior and Redeemer, please change the hearts and minds of all those who persecute us because of Your Most Holy Name! We pray that Your Most Precious Blood cover Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani and his family as he stands to witness to Your Power and Glory. May Your Kingdom come and may Your will be done on us here on earth as it is in Heaven! AMEN AMEN AMEN!

Sue says 10.1.2011, 01:06 a.m.

Paul said, "For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." How about you American Christian? This is soon to be our fate. We need to be about the work of the Lord while we can. Soon we won't be able to work for Jesus either! Are you willing to lay down your life for the sake of Christ?

Isaac says 10.1.2011, 00:47 a.m.

Our God is with us even to the very end of this age, though we pass through the valley of the shadow of 'sharia law', we fret not because the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Jesus is Lord for ever!

Merle says 10.1.2011, 00:38 a.m.

Wake up America. Speak up America. Lest this happens here.

patricia white says 9.30.2011, 11:03 p.m.

I pray that this will come to the light of the christian community. Have postive reaction for CHRIST

Mary says 9.30.2011, 10:52 p.m.

I'm so convicted by this precious man's boldness in the midst of incredible adversity. Praying the Lord delivers him like He did Peter, when he was in prison. I know this pastor trusts God no matter what, but I know prayers for his peace and strength would be greatly appreciated.

Obafemi Adejumo says 9.30.2011, 10:26 p.m.

When James was arrested the brethren did not pray but when Peter was arrested they prayed and Peter was released. Not because we are afraid of dying for the testimony of Jesus, but one thing i will like to us to understand. We can glorify God in our living or in our death. The blood of martyrs has always been the seed of the church

Bette says 9.30.2011, 10:16 p.m.

Thank-You for speaking out on this! Blessings!

Diana says 9.30.2011, 10:12 p.m.

I agree it is crazy that more countries and leaders are not outraged regarding this.

Brenda says 9.30.2011, 10:11 p.m.

I will pray for this pastor that he will feel the presence of his God during this persecution. May he be freed from this attack on his beliefs

Connie says 9.30.2011, 10:02 p.m.

How can we make a difference in these type of atrocities?

Joanne says 9.30.2011, 9:42 p.m.

Thank you for posting this information. Public awareness is such a powerful tool in changing policy. This is a terrible thing to have government sanctioned persecution of faith, not just some specific faith based action. I will pray for this man. It is frustrating not to be able to do more but ultimately, God holds his fate in His hands.

Lauren says 9.30.2011, 9:40 p.m.

Amen! Where are the voices of Christians and supporters of human rights across the world?

Rose Mary says 9.30.2011, 9:34 p.m.

We are suppose to be the body of Christ so what hurts one part will hurt the rest. It is time we stop being so selfish and self centered and think of others and raise our voices on behalf of our brothers and sisters all over the word. Before too long it will be stories like that about us and I hope others will be more willing to speak out and pray.

Johny says 9.30.2011, 9:26 p.m.

Pray for him..

Rosa says 9.30.2011, 9:19 p.m.

I do join with you and others in prayer for this man and all other persecuted Christians. May God be close at this time to this man and his family and may God move in a mighty way to save him and others in harms way. Rise up Christians, let your voice be heard for this cause!

Wendy says 9.30.2011, 8:44 p.m.

GOD IS GOOD, so I'm sure our Lord Jesus remains with pastor Youcef Nadarkhani. I'm sure the Pastor's life is safe BECAUSE he BELIEVES in Him, his Faith is in Jesus. Pastor Youcef knows he's not alone, however, it's probably these days he has had some moments, like our Beloved King Jesus Christ, when He was in his worst time in Gethsemane - Matthew 26: 38 " Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Luke 22: 41-44 " He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed: Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done. An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him, and being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground." Jesus had this terrible anguish, so I know He is with pastor Youcef through this trance. May the Will of our sweet and mighty Lord Jesus be to rescue the person of this Christian pastor Youcef Nadarkhani, stays with him till His Will and His purpose in Youcef Nadarkhani let it be done. I'm going to join in this prayer cruzade for the rescue of his life. Amen.

Dave says 9.30.2011, 8:39 p.m.

Praying for our brother

Diane says 9.30.2011, 8:19 p.m.

Brother Franklin, I am standing with you and all the others for this pastor. It is an outrage that the international community will stand by and let this happen. We as a civilized people don't treat others in our country like this and yet here our government stands by with no outcry! It's all over the news! What is the matter with our Nation? I am a grandmother in Plant City, FL who is praying and standing. God bless you and your Dad and your Association. And GOD bless Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani, in Jesus' name... amen

charlee says 9.30.2011, 7:50 p.m.

Raquel, Kenya says 9.30.2011, 7:10 p.m.

In deep prayer and convinced the heavens are opening to support this dear man of God. Pastor Nadhakani's story is testimony of what God is about to do in unleashing His wrath in the world. The commander of God's army who appeared to Joshua stands with a raised sword over Iran.Peace and true conversion to the Muslim world is my prayer midst this ugly trial of true faith in Jesus.

Terry says 9.30.2011, 7:01 p.m.

It just makes my mind think of how many would hold the faith as this man has done. Knowing he will be killed he puts his trust in God. I pray for you my friend for the Lord to watch over you.

Peter says 9.30.2011, 6:45 p.m.

This is just ONE that is being made public by the media. In actuality hundreds are killed monthly for their Faith in Jesus Christ, and we begin to understand this we will understand that we are watching "Prophecy" unfold before our very eyes.

Mary says 9.30.2011, 6:30 p.m.

Please let this godly man go. He wants nothing more than to help your people live and to realize their full potential by living for the Lord.

Echikoz says 9.30.2011, 6:13 p.m.

Christianity in this part of the world is not for jokers that have filled the world today but serious people like this pastor. In life and death, Christ must be glorified. These are the saints we should take after not the christianity proclaimed in the comfort of the couch and lived like anything that has no trace to Christ.

Aaron says 9.30.2011, 6:13 p.m.

Pastor Youcef is a man of great faith. I admire his courage and his resolve not to compromise on serving the true God. My prayer for myself as well as other Christians all over the world is that may God almighty increase our faith and give us the grace not to compromise on our resolve to serve Him, the one true God. Amen.

Kimberlee says 9.30.2011, 6:10 p.m.

When I heard about this, I wasn't surprised but shocked at the same time. This makes me know that we are in the last times and our Lord is waiting for something to return, I'm not sure what, but I know He wants everyone to hear the truth of the gospel. What a man of God is this preacher standing up for His Lord and his beliefs. I will be praying for Him and his family during this trial. I know our Lord will use this for His glory. We will all learn from this.

Cheryl says 9.30.2011, 6:10 p.m.

Just sending encouragement and hope to pastor Nadarkhani..with God all things are possible..as Paul said, to live is Christ, to die is gain..and as you have mentioned Franklin, his rewards will be bountiful in Heaven if his life is taken for the cause of Christ and HIS Name...Hallelujah Let us lift him up and his family for strength and peace in Jesus' Name..Amen

LL says 9.30.2011, 6:04 p.m.

Praying for his release.

Becky says 9.30.2011, 6:04 p.m.

My prayers to Pastor Nadarkhani....the Bible speaks of martyr's and they will truly wear a beautiful crown, but we as a people should not allow this, from any country.

Kaitlin says 9.30.2011, 6:02 p.m.

That really hurts me and makes me mad that a fellow Christian could be put to death for his belief in our Lord. I pray for him, and I am amazed at his faith and I hope to have that strong of faith one day. We need to speak out against his sentence.

Chris says 9.30.2011, 6:00 p.m.

May God Bless the wonderful man for showing how much he loves The Lord Jesus Christ. I am with him 100. The ones doing this will have to pay for what they are doing not him. I will pray that God's will, will be done and they will set this man free to deliver the word of God not for his sake but for theirs.

Ruben says 9.30.2011, 5:53 p.m.

Please pray for this pastor, and also pray for the leaders of Iran, may the light of the gospel iluminate their minds and their hearts will have mercy upon this servant of the all mighty Lord.

Elisabeth says 9.30.2011, 5:49 p.m.

I agree with you, Pastor Graham, in your call for leaders 'on the world stage' to boldly condemn the outrage of this sentence on Pastor Nadarkhani, and to take action to see that he is freed immediately and that this atrocity cease. I pray for Pastor Nadarkhani, his family and his flock, that they may sense the very real and comforting presence of God during this time of persecution. In Jesus' Name, I pray that God will be glorified and boldly proclaimed to all the world. I humbly pray that I live my own life with the same strength and faithfulness as this man of God, who, in the very face of death, does not waiver from his faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Ruben says 9.30.2011, 5:46 p.m.

As blessed people of the United States of America, we should be making a stand. We need to open our eyes and see what Islam is really about instead of blinding ourselves. We need to stop being cowards and stand up for Jesus Christ and His people. God is our shield and sword, He will rescue His own! We are praying for his life.

Cindy says 9.30.2011, 5:45 p.m.

Oh Father, I lift up Pastor Nadarkhani!! Cover him the wings of your Mighty Protection!!! Father I pray you save him, and that through this you will be mightily Glorified!!!! In the Mighty Name of Jesus ..Name above all names.... Great is thy faithfulness!!! Oh Lord!!

I am a commercial pilot and have full privileges with people wanting me to fly, please pray that I can drive in any capacity to earn a living, thank you and may God richly bless you

This is terrible! More horrible is that there isn't international outcry. I've said prayer for he and his family. Hopefull our prayers will be answered and he will be released. Either way, I pray the Glory of God will be seen thru this tragedy.

Arlene says 9.30.2011, 5:26 p.m.

Our prayer groups and church have been praying for God to intervene on Pastor Nadarkhani's behalf. May God be glorified and many brought to Christ through the testimony of this young man.

People raised a million or more for the Hikers. Why can't we bargain and do that for the Pastor. I'm sure there are millions of Christians and I know they would be glad to donate.

Complacency and self- absorption are now the official stance not just of individuals but of governments across the world. Oh that each of us would and will have such resolve in our own families, churches, workplaces and communities as the powers of this world battle Christ and his angels.

Phil says 9.30.2011, 5:22 p.m.

I wonder, how many of us, that call our selves Christians, and who live in a society that allows us to worship as we please----how many of us would stand up for Jesus, if facing death? We all need to bind together and pray for the safe release of Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani.

TracyLyn says 9.30.2011, 5:21 p.m.

Father God, I come to you at this time and ask that you would keep your hand on your precious child. Lord we ask that you would soften the hearts of those who would seek to put this man to death for doing your business. Lord we don't know what your plans are but we trust in you and know that your will be done. Lord be with our world leaders that they to will seek for this pastors freedom. This is my prayer. Amen

lisa says 9.30.2011, 5:18 p.m.
