Children: A Trust From God

Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.— Proverbs 22:6

Children: A Trust From God

What is your attitude toward your children? Do you consider them a trust from God, eternal souls for whom Christ died? Did you ever hear God say to you, as Pharaoh’s daughter did to Moses’ mother, “Take this child … and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages”? (Exodus 2:9, KJV).

Children are to be taught, and they ought to be taught early in life. Where do you suppose Moses learned about God? In Pharaoh’s court? Hardly. He learned about God from his mother.

I was brought up in the Orient, and I know that it is not an unusual thing for a mother to nurse her baby for three to five years. In that length of time, Moses’ mother could have taught him a great deal about God and about his own people. So when he became a man, he chose to suffer affliction with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season (Hebrews 11:25).

And later we have the story of Hannah, who prayed so earnestly for young Samuel. Someone has said, “If more children were longed for and prayed for as Hannah longed and prayed, perhaps there would be more men like Samuel.” God gave Hannah Samuel, and she gave him back to God. After she had weaned him (again, he could have been 3 to 5 years old), she took him to the Temple and presented him to the Prophet Eli.

The Bible says that Eli’s sons, “made themselves vile, and he restrained them not” (1 Samuel 3:13, KJV). Samuel, living at the same time in that atmosphere, grew up pure and clean—a man of God.

You have your children for a few short years; train them before the time is gone.

I often refer to "our" two children as God's Children. Most seem perplexed by my statement. I often have to explain that they are not really ours but rather God's children. He has entrusted them to us to raise them and know Him as their Father.

I raised my five children with the teachings and admonishons of scripture. Some our greatest times together as a family have been during devotions or some other study of scripture or prayer. I do not post this to brag to you, but to encourage you. Because, all of this was done during a troubled marriage. And, after 26 years he has now divorced me AND 4 of my 5 children are following in their father's footsteps-away from God. Have I cringed, a big YES; have I cried, another big YES; but I am not afraid. Because I trust my Father in Heaven to bring about the final result of what he trusted me to do in the beginning. They ARE given to us for a short time and we don't know what the future holds. If we don't teach them...THE WORLD WILL!!!

@Barbara, you are not alone. I stand in agreement with you, knowing that the Lord our God has heard your prayer and your hearts desire concerning your son. Don't worry for worry will bring stress, anxiety, and fear, in which none are of God; but trust and believe in the LORD, stand on HIS Word and put your confidence in HIM. HE says cast all our cares upon HIM. HE also says that HE will give us the desires of our hearts. If we pray, why worry and if we worry, why pray? God got us and our children. Just keep believing, thanking, and praising HIM for his salvation(speaking those things that aren't as though they were). Keep him covered in prayer by the Word of God and the blood of Jesus, amen? Amen. May God bless you and keep your hear at peace.

Everything God has done is good and beautiful. This reading has put on me more reason to commit myself to the training of my children. 'Am greatful for it. May the peace of the Lord be with you all.

I pray to the Lord above that I have raised my son in a way that is pleaseing to him. I pray that he will be a great man with only nine months left untill he turns 18. I worry about him for the things in this world are horrible and I am afraid for him to be on his own.
