How to Heal a Nation

A Letter From Billy Graham

July 19, 2011 - "It is only through Jesus Christ that lives, as well as nations, can be healed." — Billy Graham

How to Heal a Nation

It is pleasing to God 'that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives' (1 Timothy 2:1–2).

How to Heal a Nation

Every time I hear a report on how God is using the My Hope outreach in countries around the world, it thrills my heart. As this letter is being mailed, a wonderful effort is under way to take the Gospel across Haiti.

Believers in Haiti are praying for loved ones or friends who need to hear the Gospel, then inviting them into their homes to see or hear evangelistic broadcasts prepared by BGEA specifically for that culture. Two of the programs in Haiti include Gospel messages from me that were recorded earlier, and another has a message from Franklin on the Prodigal Son.

The programs are presented using TV, DVD, and radio, as well as a new kind of battery-powered video mini-projector for places without electricity. After a broadcast, hosts give their personal testimony and invite guests to “turn to God in repentance and … faith in our Lord Jesus” (Acts 20:21, NIV).

Our team in Haiti tells me that more than 5,300 churches and tens of thousands of Christians are taking part. One of them, a man who had been praying for specific friends and neighbors, began witnessing before the broadcasts began and has already led seven people on his list to Christ.

Haiti is, in many ways, a land in desperation. Pray that the hope and power of the Gospel will change that nation.

Up Next: Portugal

Years ago, I was invited to hold a Crusade in Lisbon, Portugal, but due to political unrest at the time, those plans had to be canceled. Another opportunity for me to preach in Portugal never came—until now, through our My Hope television outreach.

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and many churches in Portugal are well along in preparations for a nationwide My Hope outreach that will culminate in early December.

My Hope has been to 53 countries, and local churches from those countries have recorded millions of decisions for Christ as a result, but this will be the first time in Europe. I have received reports of a great sense of expectation and faith among Portuguese pastors for what God will do in their country.

Summer: A Time for Family

Our family recently marked the fourth anniversary of my wife Ruth’s death. Not a day goes by that I do not think about her. Ruth would be honored and pleased by a special exhibit this summer at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, N.C., focusing on her deep interest in young people, missionaries, prisoners, and people struggling with personal hurt. I am reminded of a little poem she wrote as a teenager—her heart never changed.

Summer is a time when many of my grandchildren and great-grandchildren are on vacation and come by more often to see me. Their visits are especially appreciated this year after a bout with pneumonia caused me to be hospitalized for several days and left me weakened. I’m doing much better now and am working to rebuild strength and stamina.

For some time I have been working on a book on the challenges and joys of growing older, from a Christian perspective. Nearing Home will be released in the fall, and it is my hope that the book will be an encouragement both to people entering retirement and people who—like me—are well into their later years.

Unbroken

My friend Louis Zamperini, an Olympic champion and WWII hero, came to see me recently. I’ve known him for 60 years, and we had a wonderful time together. The next day he traveled to the Library where he autographed copies of Unbroken, a book about his amazing life story.

The book, which reached No. 1 not long ago on the New York Times best-seller list, includes a vivid account of how his life was instantly transformed by the power of the Gospel during our 1949 Crusade in Los Angeles. Men like Louis are a moving reminder of why we do what we do in this ministry—tell people everywhere how Jesus Christ can change their lives.

Prayer for the Ministry

Franklin is leading evangelistic events in Denver and Milwaukee in August. Pray for him and also for Christians who are inviting friends and neighbors to hear the Gospel. I preached at Crusades in both cities in years past and am asking God to move in a great way this summer.

When you pray, remember our nation’s leaders. America is facing many crises, and the responsibilities of national leadership can be overwhelming. The Bible says it is pleasing to God “that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives” (1 Timothy 2:1–2).

If God enables you, consider a gift to BGEA this month. Although age and health limit my own activities, BGEA remains fully and urgently engaged in proclaiming the Gospel because we know that it is only through Jesus Christ that lives, as well as nations, can be healed.

May God bless you,

Billy Graham

P.S. - Don Wilton, who is my pastor and a great encouragement to me, has written a book filled with insight about the prayer Jesus prayed the night before He died. When you send a gift to BGEA this month, we’ll send a copy of When God Prayed as our thank-you.

Pray for My Hope Haiti

Support Christians in Haiti as they open their homes to people who need the Gospel, this July 21-23. Please consider supporting this effort with a financial gift too.

Dear Pastor Graham, If I had the chance to meet with anyone in the Earth, it would be you. I thank God for you and the true witness you have been to me. I had the pleasure of attending a live gathering and hear you preach when I lived in the Albuquerque , New Mexico in the 90s. I will follow you as you follow Christ! Mr. Graham,Thank you for the encouragement you have provided me over many years. I was fortunate to participate in your Dallas 2002 Crusade as a counselor. Wow! I love the simple Gospel Message you have proclaimed for so many years and that you again shared in Dallas. I don't know if you remember, but it rained like crazy one of the nights - and being in the old Texas Stadium, there was no option of closing the roof! But God blessed our time together anyway! I look forward to reading your new book. Thank you for your faithfulness!! Love and blessings...mike

Mr Graham, I thank God for the gifts he has given you, and how you have used them to speak his word to so many people all over the world. I was one of those people in the Seattle Kingdome many years ago where God spoke to my heart. I didn't come forward that day, but he kept working in me, and I finally asked him into my heart. I pray for you, and thank Him for the continued ministry he has given you.

Linda says 7.26.2011, 10:28 p.m.

I made a special trip to your Library June, 2010. I was the first one to arrive and last one to leave. As I walked to the Barn I heard "Just As I Am" over the garden loudspeaker. I broke into tears and sobbed all the way to Ruth's grave where a beautiful wreath had been laid in her honor that week. I stood there sobbing, remembering the Crusades I watched as a child and always admiring and respecting you as a man of God. Sadly, I turned away for many years due to many unhappy life events. I did not know or understand that God truly loved me and wanted to protect me. I made many many mistakes along the way doing my own path. Jump ahead nearly 30 years and I came back to the Lord on my knees as I had nowhere else to turn. I finally realized He had been there all along protecting me but allowing me to suffer the consequences of my sins. So, I had many flashbacks on that entire day I spent at your Library. The volunteer workers could not believe I was in there so long, they came looking for me. I cried my way through, watching, reading, and listening to Everything! It truly was a joyous day. The staff arranged for a night at your Retreat Center. I could have stayed there a week. I felt so blessed. It felt as if Ruth had prayed over every rocker in the facility as though she were right there rocking alongside me. I know this is long but you have stayed the course, never drifting and always abiding by God's Word. Thank you for your steadiness.

Randall says 7.26.2011, 4:25 p.m.

I remember that in all your crusades, you specifically stated that each time Christ called someone to follow Him, they were called to make their decisions public. Thank you

Evie says 7.26.2011, 2:28 p.m.

I have followed you and your team and beautiful wife, Ruth, for over 60 years. I heard you preach in NYC at a ballpark 50 years ago and to this day I feel your presence. A picture of you and Ruth are taped to a cabinet door in my laundry room. You are looking into each others eyes with such love. Until we meet in the Lord's House - I love you

Teresa says 7.25.2011, 11:08 p.m.

Thank you so much for setting a godly example before the world for these many years. Sadly, most of us did not grow up in homes where God was elevated to His rightful place. I travel through Asheville at least a couple of times each year, and as I do, I always say a special prayer for God's presence and grace to remain with you and keep you in peace. I have often wondered how many others do the same thing. I passed through Asheville on the day of your wife's funeral four years ago, and my heart and prayers went out to your family. May God richly bless you as you continue to serve Him.

Juanita says 7.25.2011, 6:55 p.m.

You have been instrumental voice in my walk with the LORD. Bless you in your committment to HIM and to the world.

Kathleen says 7.25.2011, 1:19 p.m.

I have only good thoughts when I think of you. Your faithfulness and strength in your beliefs have been a light to this world. When I read your books and listen to your sermons I know that you are speaking the truth. That is such a rare thing in this world today. Thank you for giving your life to help others find the real meaning in life. I accepted Christ at age 16 when I heard you preach in Los Angeles in 1963.

Margaret says 7.25.2011, 01:13 a.m.

Thank you for your faithfulness to the Lord all these years. I met you in 1959 when I was on the staff at Ridgecrest and you came to speak at the staff meeting. I have appreciated your messages on tv, radio, in the printed media, and your many books. I thank God for Franklin and the work he is doing as well as your entire family. I look forward to the new book in the fall. May God bless you and keep you in His care.

Leonie says 7.24.2011, 6:17 p.m.

You are such a blessing to millions of people. The scripture" They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing,To declare that the Lord is upright..(Ps 92:14,15a)is true in your life. May God bless you

Ruth says 7.24.2011, 2:10 p.m.

Dear Billy Graham, I want to tell you how You have helped me in living my life each day knowing that God was guiding me in everything I do. I thank God every day for The gift of Billy Graham and the gift of your messages to the world. What an inspiration you have been to the world. May God bless you and your family always.

MARGIE says 7.23.2011, 8:10 p.m.

THANK-YOU FOR YOUR FAITHFULNESS TO THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN CAPTIVATED BY YOUR SERMONS, I WOULD SIT ON THE FLOOR AND WATCH YOU ON TV WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL. YOU"VE ALWAYS HAD THAT "PEACE" ABOUT YOU

Fran says 7.23.2011, 7:18 p.m.

I hope I will be able to read your new book. I have followed your ministry for over 60 years.! I too am growing older and not as able as I want to be but still very active with church, community and the National unrest bothers me so, I can see where it has so much without God that I am sure HE will prevail.

La Juana says 7.22.2011, 11:46 p.m.

Rejoicing that you have another book coming out. I pray for you daily. Thank you for what you did for me Sept. 9, 1968. Through one of your Crusades I gave my life to Christ. The Holy Spirit had me on the floor crying out to the Lord in my living room. Your ministry kept me from Hell. I may not see you this time around but I can't wait to see you and Ruth together again in the arms of Jesus.

Bill says 7.22.2011, 11:02 p.m.

Dr. Graham: I remember listening to you on radio and TV as a child with my mother. I also had the awesome privilege of accepting Jesus Christ at one of your Crusades in 1975 in Jackson, MS. What you are saying today is so true; the ONLY hope for America is a true spiritual revival, a turning back to God. The things of this world just don't hold the answers. I know you miss your sweet Ruth, for I lost my wife seven years ago, and I know how painful it is. I think the hardest part is the "sharing things together" that we're deprived of. I thank God for you and for your teaching of His profound truths over the years that has never changed. I'm really looking forward to your new book. May God continue to bless you and your family.

Penny says 7.22.2011, 11:00 p.m.

I am so pleased to read that you are well, Billy. What a wonderful thing you are doing in Haiti! God bless you. I am sixty-one and facing both hips being replaced, and I am having other physical problems as well. I've been rather discouraged, but your perseverance and positive attitude are an encouragement to me. I have followed you and your family since I was a little girl and I feel like you are all my "family," so it is always good to hear how you are all doing. I got to meet Anne when she came here to Fresno, California, and I was blessed to participate in your Crusade here in 2001. God bless you and yours.

Renea says 7.22.2011, 9:00 p.m.

I am so thankful for you, Pastor! So very thankful that you are doing better! Along with Ronisha's post, I cannot wait to get Nearing Home in the fall! Also, the way you write your newsletters, I can hear you speaking those words. It just comes to life. Your sincerity is felt in every letter. May God bless you with every good and perfect gift! And many more visits from your grandchildren this summer:) Grandchildren are such a joy!

Susan says 7.22.2011, 6:34 p.m.

Your continued ability to preach is surely a gift from God to us all. Your patient, fervent and persistent message has reached so many. My father, at 83, is slowly getting away from us. He has been the most hard-working person I have ever known, but did not have any relationship with us kids. Now that I have a relationship with him, albeit with a 1,500 mile separation, I'm broken to think I'm losing him. Please ask your team to pray for both my parents and my family. I am hopeful that your book will help us, and I thank you for it in advance. Not many are willing to talk about the issues facing families as their parents grow old. Be blessed.

Vera says 7.22.2011, 4:55 p.m.

I loved your Article on how to heal a Nation and I was rejoicing to hear that you were getting stronger everyday. We prayed for your healing and am so thankful for your Ministry. You and Ruth have certainly left a legacy for your children and all of your hard work, Spiritually, in Prayer, and Physically will continue to produce fruit for future generations. Thank you for everyone's Faithfulness: You Billy and your precious wife Ruth, Cliff Barrows, George Beverly Shea and now your children. Godliness in the Christian circles is so lacking and your Moral Stability are wonderful examples to us all. Thank you and many blessings to you and your family for many years to come. We are looking forward to your new book. God's love to you all.

Sue says 7.22.2011, 10:36 a.m.

Dear Billy: My husband and I just returned from the Senior Celebration at The Cove. As always, it was a wonderful experience. But the highlight was Tuesday evening when you and Bev Shea came to the session and with Cliff Barrows, shared some experiences of your 60-year ministry. I consider those moments to be one of the highlights of my life, as I have followed your crusades since I was a teenager. Bless all of you as you continue to minister to us in your twilight years. We continue to pray for all of you and your families.

Joyce says 7.22.2011, 10:03 a.m.

Through the years my family and I have supported your ministry and prayed for your continued success and health. My son and I had the privilege of hearing you when we traveled from Denver and SC to hear you share Jesus' message of salvation at the Rose Bowl. We were honored to stay at the same hotel and to meet some of your dedicated and Christ-like staff. It is an awesome part of our lives and we can't wait to see you and Ruth in the home that God has prepare for us. I heard God say, "I have something in there for you." I opened the envelope and read the Scripture, "The islands will look to Me and wait in hope." The newsletter was about: "My Hope: Dominican Republic". One year and much prayer later my husband and I are living in the DR getting ready to open the orphanage!

Yes we really need to pray for our country and it's leaders because that is what the Bible says to do. I have listened to your crusades and seen them on TV when I was growing up and it always has been an inspiration to our family! May God bless You, Franklin, and the whole family that is involved with BGEA! And all of the glory be to Jesus who died for our sins and paid the price!

As I read your letter I was reminded of when I watched your Crusades on TV as a child with my grandmother. You are a REAL EVANGELIST. There's something different about you and I feel God's anointing even while reading your letter. May God continue to sustain you and keep you strong to do the work of the Lord. I pray God will guide and direct our leaders in this country and that they will surrender their wills to His will. Only then will our country thrive again as a strong country - "..one nation under God with liberty and justice for all". God Bless You, Evangelist Billy Graham.

Donna says 7.21.2011, 5:09 p.m.

You have always been and inspiration to me. I remember as a little girl watching you on tv and then about 23 years or so ago I went to Tallahassee, Florida to see you myself, I was so touched by your words. My Dad had a massive stroke 5 years ago, he is still with us but has little independence so I'm looking forward to your new book, because I read to him several times a week and think it would be something for him, I pray that it is. Thank you for staying true to your Savior and always representing him in an honorable way. Praise God for his abundant GRACE.

Lillian says 7.21.2011, 4:46 p.m.

Thank you for your many years of ministry. I was among the ones in the choir at your long Crusade in Madison Square Garden. The subject of your book reminds me of the last words in a book I wrote about aging -When Youth Fades. As you continue to serve I trust you will be encouraged by these words. "When life draws to an end, we can look back on a life well spent.. Until then, keep blooming, keep growing, keep ripening. " God's not finished with you, yet.

I honestly enjoy receiving these wonderful messages from you Brother Graham. I am looking forward to your new book as I retired 1-1/2 years ago, lost my husband 6 years ago and just made a move from OH to TX to be around my grown children and their families. It's been quite an adjustment but the Lord has been there all the time with me. He puts a new song in my heart each morning and I am thankful for that! I am praying for your speedy recovery! God Bless You Today and Every Day!

Thank you so much for your encouraging message. I am so glad to hear that you are feeling better after your bout with pneumonia, and that you have been having many family visitors this summer. ( I had the good fortune to witness a very special time in Ocean Grove, NJ where your grandson, Will came to preach in May. What a blessing!) I am looking forward to your new book, especially since my husband and I are planning retirement in the near future. You have been an inspiration to my family in these many years...first with my grandparents, then my parents and now my family. May God bless you and yours. I will continue to pray for you, your organization, and for our nation, and its leaders. Thank you, Billy, for being a light in this dark world.
