We Do Not Rejoice When Wicked Men Perish

A Letter from Franklin Graham

May 26, 2011 - The Bible is very clear that we are not to rejoice when wicked men perish.

We Do Not Rejoice When Wicked Men Perish

“As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die?” (Ezekiel 33:11, NIV).

It grieves God when people die in their sins because the Bible says that He is “not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

As the father of a son serving in the U.S. military, I am very proud of all who guard our shores and protect our freedom. We continue to remember the victims of 9/11, their families, and all those who have shed their blood for the freedom of this land. How grateful I am for the freedom we have in Jesus Christ, who went to Mount Calvary and shed His blood for our sins and the sins of the world.

Recently I was a guest of Bill O’Reilly on Fox News, and he was questioning me about whether a person who has never heard of Jesus will go to Heaven. What I know is that Jesus Christ spoke very plainly when He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

O’Reilly also asked me about children of the Holocaust who died with no opportunity to be introduced to Christ. What will be their eternal destiny? To make a point, I replied that before we talked about children, we should make sure of our own destiny. I asked him, as well as the TV audience, “How about you?”

The Bible says, “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus Christ came for sinners, not for the righteous. He shed His blood on the cross for the sins of mankind, died, and on the third day rose again. When we admit our sinfulness and turn in faith to Jesus Christ, we receive forgiveness and the gift of eternal salvation. That is the good news of the Gospel. God “wants all people to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth” (1Timothy 2:4).

My question to Bill O’Reilly is my question to you. What about you? You must accept Christ.

About young children who have died, I’ve had many parents raise that concern with me over the years. I take comfort in God’s Word. The Bible tells how God brought His people out of Egypt, delivering them from slavery, and led them through the wilderness to the Promised Land. When they were ready to enter, the people refused out of fear to go forward, failed to trust God, and disobeyed. Because of their rebellion, God described them as an “evil generation” (Deuteronomy 1:35) and declared they would never see the Promised Land but instead die in the wilderness.

However, God said that “the little ones, … your children who do not yet know good from bad—they will enter the land. I will give it to them” (Deuteronomy 1:39). I believe children who die under the age of accountability are safe in God’s arms.

Our nation today is in trouble

We’ve seen years of lavish spending, greed, and borrowing money from the future, and we were warned it might affect our great-grandchildren—but the economic recklessness is already affecting us all today. We have fallen victim to Satan with loans we couldn’t sustain, credit cards we couldn’t pay, and purchases we couldn’t afford, all because we believed the same promise that Satan offered Adam and Eve: “Surely you will not die” (see Genesis 3:4). We thought we could live life as though there were no limits. This happened on an individual level, with our financial institutions, and among the politicians in Washington.

At the same time, we see moral decay spreading throughout the land. Our country is deteriorating rapidly, an ever-tightening spiral downward—financially, socially, and spiritually. America is decaying from within.

The real problem is that as a nation we have turned our backs on God, removing Him from schools, businesses, and government, and unfortunately many a family has taken God out of their home as well. If this country hopes to make it through the enormous crises we now face, if we want America to be a nation worth leaving to our grandchildren, we have to turn back to God.

Upcoming Outreach

At BGEA we are committed to taking the Gospel across our land and to the whole world. This summer from the Jersey Shore to Southern California and from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Lakes, we are preaching “the true message of the gospel” (Colossians 1:5), calling people to repentance, forgiveness, and salvation through Jesus Christ.

In several weeks I will lead Festival de Esperanza in Los Angeles, our first ever all-Spanish Crusade in this country. Nearly 600 Spanish-speaking churches are joining with us in the preparations. Pray for an outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit this June 25–26 upon the Greater Los Angeles area as we invite men and women to come to faith in Jesus Christ.

As I write this, I am traveling in North Korea and China. Pray that a significant foundation for future ministry will be laid as a result of visits with key leaders in these two countries. While in China, I am preaching in two churches in Beijing.

My son Will has just returned to the United States after preaching at a Crusade in the Philippines. We praise the Lord that more than 21,000 people there made public decisions for Christ, receiving the “hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began” (Titus 1:2, NKJV). As we mail this letter, Will is preaching the Good News at a three-day, region-wide evangelistic event in New Jersey.

We are deeply grateful for your prayers and your financial help as we unapologetically proclaim the power of the Gospel in cities across the land of America as well as in countries worldwide.

May God bless you,
Franklin Graham

God is giving us the map, directions, roads to travel, I know a lot of his children read the largest MEDICAL BOOK (THE BIBLE), the LIVING word of God, continue to be blessed and let's pray for those who don't know God in the pardon of their sins.

Doug C says 6.12.2011, 2:49 p.m.

My own belief is that there is scripture to support children who pass away before the age of accountability are received in the Kingdom of Heaven: "When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these'." NIV Mark 10:14

Deborah says 6.6.2011, 11:58 p.m.

Thank you Reverend Graham for this article. The same question was asked by an organization a while back which I responded to. My mind and heart said no, because we all are God's children. God loves all of His children. It is His desire for all to turn to Him through Jesus Christ before it is too late. When I first learned of bin Laden's death, there was no rejoicing in my heart just sadness. I absolutely feel my comment did not show disrespect for the many we lost on that horrific day of 9/11. This is not about me, you or anyone else. It is about the thoughts and ways of our Almighty God. The only way for His children to know His thoughts and ways is through His truth. Yet, He doesn't share all of His thoughts and ways, because He will only reveal everything about Him with those He chooses to enter into His heavenly Kingdom. When someone sincerely falls in love with Jesus Christ, they will love all whether wicked or not. But, God does not want His faithful to like nor participate with the thoughts and ways of the wicked. Thank you again for sharing this article. Even though I felt in my heart that it was wrong to celebrate bin Laden's death, there remained just a bit of doubt that I could have been wrong. God Bless You, Reverend Graham P.S. My comment appears like I am preaching, but I am not. Just sharing my God given heart.

Habtom says 6.3.2011, 1:59 p.m.

Praise be to our Lord Jesus.God bless you all. It is my usual prayer to see restoration in our Great nation America: Where people of God had established good systems on it.

Glen says 6.1.2011, 07:54 a.m.

I rejoice about the zeal for Christ in the Philippines. I will pray for upcoming festivals and for America. I read a verse in the Bible that said something like, "Even if a primitive people have not heard the gospel, they know in their heart that there is a God. God puts that in everyone's heart. Sorry I can't find the verse. I think it is in Ecclesiastes.

Evlyn says 5.31.2011, 04:02 a.m.

Thanks Franklin. Am not an American. Am a Kenyan but am happy about the new message we receive daily in your ministries. The word is a journey that involves a lot of commitment thanks again. Please pray for us to be committed. Thanks again to your dad he is a real preacher.

VivianAnn says 5.30.2011, 7:29 p.m.

I will be praying. Sincerely in Christ Jesus, Love in the Lord.

Thomas says 5.30.2011, 5:41 p.m.

I am praying for you and your outreach. I am glad to hear about the all Spanish crusade in LA. This can only further outreach from here in the USA to other countries, resulting in even greater activity than is occurring now. I am glad to see your letter on not rejoicing over the death of a wicked man after that Bin Ladin ordeal. I offered up a prayer for him in case his sins can be forgiven him. The many lives he caused to be lost and was going to be caused to be lost are not equal to an eternity in hell fire. Who knows! In his twisted reasoning he thought he was doing good. Isn't the rejoicing we saw, on his death, comparable to the rejoicing of Arabs on 9/11?

Joe says 5.29.2011, 9:25 p.m.

When I was a little kid in the 1950s my grandmother said Billy Graham was a wonderful man. She was right. Now you just keep on keeping on Rev. Franklin, we need you now as ever.

walter says 5.29.2011, 8:52 p.m.

Thank you Franklin for laying it on the line about the decline of the US- We need a Wake UP Call and I'm so glad you so elequently stated just that. What a pity that God is not a pat of so many households in the US. The Old Testement tells how God will put up with a countrys drift from Godliness just so long and then Gopd takes action against the country. The best remedy- READ YOUR BIBLE and live your life accordingly.

Doris says 5.28.2011, 8:22 p.m.

I Praise God for you and your father's ministry. I came to know the Lord Jesus in a personal way thru his book Peace with God many years ago when the description of His Suffering on that Cross for my sins brought me to my knees. God is so faithful to His Word. He has met my needs all my life even before I knew Him. I am so glad I know where I am going because He took my place down here so I could go free. I know your father was chosen of God to save souls and there will stars without number in his crown and yours. Stay strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. He is able to keep you.

Don says 5.28.2011, 6:04 p.m.

Thank you Franklin for the work you and the BGEA do around the world. We were in Paraguay in a nationwide effort and 25000 people came to Christ with television remote broadcasts nationwide and we were greatly blessed as we saw the Paraguayans come to Christ. We served there almost 40 years and your ministry was a highlight.

Rose says 5.28.2011, 4:05 p.m.

Thank you Franklin for what you do and especially for sharing the truth about Jesus Christ. I love supportint BGEA and you because our first concern needs to be to "go into all the world" and tell them about Jesus.

Diane H. says 5.28.2011, 10:33 a.m.

Thank you for the scripture about the evil man. The day the evil one died, my spirit was unsettled and I know it was because he died lost. Everyone needs the gospel. God bless you and all who work with you.

Donna says 5.28.2011, 10:23 a.m.

Rev. Graham. May God continue to bless you and your family. I was raised listening to your father and thank God that you have followed in his footsteps. I too had misgivings about rejoicing in Bin Laden's death. It is always a tragedy when anyone dies without knowing Jesus as their Savior. I am praying for you while in N.Korea. God be with you as you bring the word to an unsaved world.

Sally says 5.27.2011, 11:42 p.m.

It is such an encouragement to hear that your son, Will, is boldly sharing the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ like his dad and grandad! I am so thankful for your other sons willingness to bravely serve in the military. My family and I will be praying for you and your family. Psalms 46

Arlene says 5.27.2011, 8:44 p.m.

Thank you, Rev. Graham, for the assurance from scripture that God saves the little ones who die before the age of accountability. What a blessing to know the RRT is able to get to the scene of a tragedy so quickly to offer love, support and mostly the plan of salvation to hurting hearts.

Deborah says 5.27.2011, 8:35 p.m.

My dear Mom who went to heaven almost three years ago loved to listen to your father. He was so genuine in his faith and you certainly have taken after him. We as as a so-called Christian nation shut our eyes to evil because we were afraid it would touch us and as long as it didn't we were ok. 9-11 changed all that. Evil reached our shores on that fateful day. Even though I cried for 3 days straight over that I still thought what a incredible witness Bin Laden would have made had he come to know Jesus Christ as his saviour. I agree we should not rejoice over an evil man's death for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. If we hadn't had someone who cared enough about our salvation we would be no better. True we would have not master-minded the death of so many people but we are still not perfect. Only Jesus is. Thank you Rev Graham for reaching out to the unreachable . We have only our hope and faith in Jesus to carry us through these terrible times ahead. We need to become true disciples of Jesus and stand together as one and we can bring God back to America. God bless you !!!

Bob says 5.27.2011, 8:02 p.m.

This is so refreshing to read amidst all vengence towards 'evil' men. Every humanbeing at one time was a helpless baby totally dependant on their caregivers; tragic how some drifted so far from God resulting into horrible consequences.

James R. says 5.27.2011, 6:27 p.m.

To know Christ and spend time with Him only a daily basis shall lead you through life with an enjoyable and happy life. Our father is Heaven loves us so much.

Rachel says 5.27.2011, 4:06 p.m.

There is hope for our nation and that is if we (His people) would humble ourselves and pray and seek the face of God and turn from our wicked ways as He said in 2Chronicles 7:14, then God will hear from heaven and heal our land. Also, if we teach our children the words of God and His commandments to live by and live appropriately before them as an example, there is hope that they will be a better people for the years to come and will teach their kids the same. And no we do not rejoice when anyone dies without Christ in their life. God Bless You! Rachel

Marcus says 5.27.2011, 1:45 p.m.

Thank you for keeping up what your father started. I still listen to his crusade messages when they are played on TBN. His sense of urgency when he explained the Gospel of Jesus Christ still gets me fired up. Keep on preaching the truth of God's word, despite what worldly wisdom advocates. We have lost our way in this world and in this country. Do not not stop until the whole world hears the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Lucille says 5.27.2011, 1:10 p.m.

When people who claim to be Christian jump on the bandwagon that espouses the Word of God is full of error and that man cannot know truth, while looking to man for "a word", we place our society in peril. The Bible states that OBEDIENCE is better than sacrifice...I believe we need to look up the definition of OBEDIENCE get busy doing what we are supposed to do and follow JESUS CHRIST, the LOGOS: the Word of God made flesh!

kate says 5.27.2011, 12:16 a.m.

Thank you Rev. Graham for your boldness, obedience and leadership! We will be praying for this ministry and giving as the Lord calls us to! Praying protection and wisdom over you and your family!

MICHELE says 5.27.2011, 11:30 a.m.

Everyone wants to live in America. Why do we have such opportunities here that are not elsewhere in the world? It is because our ancestors build this great nation on the serving of the true and living God. Removing God from our daily lives is causing this country to fail. We need to repent and come back to God. He is what blessed this nation not its people. Wake up America. Thank you God for the blessing you have bestowed on this nation. Help us to get back to the way we used to be.

Janelle says 5.27.2011, 10:56 a.m.

Rev. Graham, thank you for all the work that you and your associates do to bring the word to those who don't know Jesus. I'm so glad your father is doing better and will continue to pray for you and him. I enjoy watching the crusades on Saturday night and I pray that they will always be on TV. I never was able to get to any of your Dad's crusades, but, I do plan to visit his library. I'm so glad that God is not through with him yet! I think your youth crusades are wonderful and I pray you continue to do them as our youth need Jesus in their lives right now. May God bless you and your family as you minister throughout the land!

Malinda says 5.27.2011, 10:03 a.m.

We can change our nation when we put God back in control.

Shakeita says 5.27.2011, 09:48 a.m.

Ed says 5.27.2011, 09:40 a.m.

Remeber - the scriptures have stated that Christ will come to ALL at the hour of death and everyone will be given the opportunity to accept Him and His salvation. This applies to those that have heard of Him and those that have not. This may be difficult for us to understand, but it is His way.

Ed says 5.27.2011, 08:07 a.m.

To all believers and non-believers. We need to remember that if a person is considered to be a wicked person or good one in our eyes, without the remisson of sin, without salvation, there eternal destiny is the same.

DWAYNE says 5.27.2011, 07:14 a.m.

Concerning "Our Nation Today is in Trouble" our pastor quoted, 'Freedom without Values is Lawlessness.'Men and Women today who grow up without a standard, making choices in the name of freedom, create a culture of lawlessness. Or hurt people create hurt people.

Steve says 5.26.2011, 11:37 p.m.

See also Proverbs 24:17-18 "Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles, Lest the Lord see it, and it displeases Him, And He turn away His wrath from him."

John says 5.26.2011, 11:23 p.m.

1) When I have been asked questions like those from Bill O'Reilly that are listed, I have often replied: "That is a good question. And, I do not think anyone knows the exact answer. But, I do believe that the Lord is fair and is just. What about your life?" 2) Our nation has been in trouble since the 1960s and it is only getting worse. Lavish spending is done by people who only care about themselves. (The statement "What is a credit card?" gets callers to say "You don't have one!" and "click.") If lots of people need to spend so much for some form of comfort, then they do not seem to know the Comforter and the meaning of life. 3) One thing that I cannot stand is how some people try to gain a good deal financially and spend over ninety percent of it on themselves in the latter years. To have a real life, one needs to learn the meaning of love and charity.

How I wish that you had followed your father's example and stayed non-political. Because you are involving yourself with politicians, I can no longer support any of your organizations. There are plenty of other charities who avoid the political arena.

I'm in agreement with you! It's not right to rejoice over a wicked man's perish. I am curious how different America handled Hitlers death. Even though he was beyond horrendous I doubt there were parties in the streets.

The Grahams are a family tradition for us. I came forward at a Crusade in Chicago in the 1960's. My youngest daughter accepted Christ as her savior at a Rock the River event in the Quad Cities. Thank you for being His vessels.

Pam says 5.26.2011, 8:02 p.m.

My prayer is that God will get glory out of my life. I want to understand what my role is for the life he has blessed me with on this side of heaven. I want to be ushered into a place where I can overcome fear that tries to grip me when I don't yield to it. Pray that Jesus continues to cultivate my faith and that I may live my life on purpose for Jesus.

Jimmie says 5.26.2011, 7:44 p.m.

I think we get emotionally confused sometimes about "ALL and NONE" in Scriptures. All through Scriptures we see People and Nations wiped-out BY God, and they went to Hell, not given another chance to accept and believe in the NEVER CHANGING God. I DO NOT believe the Millennial Period is for Second Chances, but will be a time for the Aborted, the Unborn, those who Died, Killed as Children, and the Mentally Ill, and 1/3rd of the God Fearing Jews spared to have a Life and Time to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. What other reason would there be such a time set aside for? NO ONE has of yet gone to Heaven to be with and see God the Father, not even Children. It will be the MARTYRS who come back with Christ, not all the Saints. This bringing in the subject of the White Throne Judgment which is for Saints, not for those who never accepted God or His Son. God Bless, oldgrapeape

Thank you for this letter. I have had mixed fillings about the killing of Bin Laden. I think it is good that he can not kill anymore, but I still had a bad felling about his killing. I would not say this to any one for fear no one would understanding. Now I know way I fell this way. God does not want us to be enjoying this. Thanks again for helping me to understand why I feel this way! Judy<><

Thank you for this enlightenment. As a Christian, i did not realize that we are not to be glad when an evil person dies. I did however know that children who do not know accountability are going to be in heaven with us. I would be interested in knowing what that age is as I have grandchildren that I pray for that are not saved. I also pray that their parents come back to Jesus. I was a backslider for awhile and if He, because of prayer, can open my eyes to Him again, then there is hope. Again thanks for you words of wisdom. God bless.

I must offer the thought that not all our Lord has said is contained in the Bible. We must know that He continues to reveal His truths to us through the Holy Spirit. I believe that even after our earthly death we can come to be with our Lord because of His sacrifice and His Father's mercy. What God wants, God gets: all to be saved! I offer this in His holy name, amen.
