Rushing Toward the End

A Message From Billy Graham

May 5, 2011 - The present world system will someday vanish. Death itself will cease, and Jesus Christ will set up his eternal Kingdom.

Rushing Toward the End

Heaven and Earth will pas away.—Matthew 24:35

Rushing Toward the End

When I appeared on a talk show years ago, one of America’s most famous personalities told me of the emptiness in her life. She said, “My beauty is gone. I am getting old. I am living on alcohol, and I really have nothing to live for.” This emptiness is typical of thousands of men and women throughout the world.

After that I visited a senior citizens’ home and talked with 10 or 15 people individually. One man asked, “Mr. Graham, what hope is there for a man who has lived a life of sin like I have?”

The Bible teaches that all of mankind is rushing toward death. C.S. Lewis once said that war does not increase death. I wondered what he meant until I thought it through. What he meant was that even though we have war, it does not increase death because death is total in every generation. Everybody dies.

The Bible says that “it is appointed for men to die once” (Hebrews 9:27). All of nature is in the process of dying. Yet most people are living as if they think that they will never die. Most people are living for today with barely a thought of eternity.

The Bible and nature both teach that everything that has a beginning also has an ending. The day begins with a sunrise; but the sun sets, the shadows gather, and that calendar day is crossed out, never to appear again. We will never be able to repeat today. It is gone forever.

Nations and civilizations rise, flourish for a time and then decay. Eventually, each comes to an end. This, because of sin, is the decree of history and the way of life on this planet. This is what prompted Henry F. Lyte to write, Change and decay in all around I see/O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

The Bible also teaches that the world system as we know it shall come to a close. We read in 1 John 2:17: “The world is passing away, and the lust of it.” And in 2 Peter 3:10 we read: “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.” Jesus said, in Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth will pass away.”

Christianity presents a Gospel of crisis. It is the Gospel of Good News, to be sure—that God has a plan for your life, that God loves you, that God is a God of mercy, that God will forgive you if you confess and forsake your sins and have faith in His Son, Jesus Christ—but as far as the world system is concerned, the Bible says that Christianity is a Gospel of crisis. It proclaims that the world’s days are numbered. Every cemetery testifies that the Bible is true. Our days on this planet are numbered. The Bible says that life is only a vapor that appears for a moment and then vanishes, that it is like the grass that withers and the flowers that fade.

There is another sense in which the world system will end. There will be an end of history. That doesn’t mean an end to life, but it means the end of a world that has been dominated by evil. The Bible speaks a great deal about the end of the world.

The Bible teaches that the present evil world system will pass away and come to a climactic, dramatic end. It also says that Jesus Christ will come again and that He will set up a Kingdom of righteousness and social justice where hatred, greed, jealousy, war and death will no longer be known. Jesus talked about the end of the present evil world system and the establishment of a new order, which is called the Kingdom of God.

Jesus Christ did not engage in fantasy. He was not given to terror tactics. He was Truth and Veracity personified. He indicated that when you see certain things come to pass, you can be assured that the end is near. He said, “You can read the signs of the weather in the sky, but because of spiritual blindness you cannot read the signs of the times” (Cf. Matthew 16:3). He indicated that only those who have spiritual illumination and discernment from the Holy Spirit can understand the trends and meanings of history.

The Bible plainly indicates that certain conditions will prevail just before the end. For example, the Bible says there will be knowledge without wisdom. The Scripture says, “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their own craftiness’” (1 Corinthians 3:19). Daniel 12:4 tells us, “Until the time of the end … knowledge shall increase.”

Today there is more knowledge about everything than at any other time in history. Young people are graduating from schools and colleges and universities, and we have more knowledge crammed into our heads than at any time the world has ever known.

We are teaching thousands of young people knowledge, but we are not giving them wisdom to use that knowledge. In every area of life people are floundering, suffering from neuroses and psychological problems on a scale that we have never known before. Our heads are filled with knowledge, but many of our hearts are empty. We are confused, bewildered, frustrated and without moral moorings.

Another condition the Bible says will be present at the end of the world system is power without peace. Many little wars are taking place all over the world. And certainly a major war could break out at any time. Somebody may push the wrong button or miscalculate. We could be plunged into a third world war that nobody wants. Jesus said, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. … For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” (Matthew 24:6-7).

The world today is like an armed camp. Billions are spent for weapons that soon become obsolete or are replaced with new ones that cost even more. The world atmosphere is one of belligerence and fear. Tempers are pushed to the limit; patience is running out.

Many people are asking, “Why is there so little peace in a world of unprecedented knowledge and unlimited potential?”

We are trying to build a peaceful world, but there is no peace within people’s hearts. We cannot build a new world on the old, unregenerate hearts of people. The new world will come about only when Jesus Christ, King of kings, Lord of lords, reigns supreme. He is the “Prince of Peace,” according to Isaiah 9:6.

The sigh of insecurity and the shouts of revolution heard across the world are perhaps the death rattle of an era in civilization, perhaps civilization as we have known it. We are reaching the human impasse. On the human level we are facing total crisis.

It is God’s turn to act, and Scripture promises that He will act dramatically. He will send his Son Jesus Christ back to this Earth. He is the Lord of history. Nothing is taking God by surprise. Events are moving rapidly toward some sort of climax, but it will be according to God’s time when Jesus Christ returns to be rightful Ruler of the world.

But before that time comes, God wants to rule in your heart. He has sent Jesus Christ into the world to be the Ruler of your heart. The Bible says that “sin shall not have dominion over you” (Romans 6:14) if Jesus Christ is in your heart as Lord and Master.

You see, there are two rulers. There is self, and there is Jesus Christ. Either self will reign and dominate, or Jesus Christ will reign and dominate. Who is your ruler? Is the Kingdom of God within you?

No matter what life you have lived, Jesus Christ can come into your heart right now if you will turn from your sins and receive Him as Savior. He loves you. He wants to forgive you. You can enter the new Kingdom, the new world that will be born under His leadership when He comes again. ©1972 BGEA

I too am so thankful for BGEA, they have all been so used by God to bless and encourage me in my own relationship with Jesus since I was a little girl. I love to see the sweet peace and joy of serving our Lord Jesus on the face of those in BGEA. What a beautiful family we all have in one another through Jesus:) Looking for His Return soon!

Sarah says 6.2.2011, 3:49 p.m.

I don't always get to read your message at the time it is sent, but when I do, I come away with a renewed feeling about my faith. Thank you so much.

daisy says 5.27.2011, 10:26 a.m.

Thank you for your wisdom and knowledge into God's word and for encouraging me through it. I agree with you that there is much knowledge in the world today but little wisdom. With people trying to take Jesus out of the picture in schools and everywhere else, what is this world reduced to without him? May everyone come to a knowledge of him and all He stands for...Truth, and love. God bless you Mr. Graham.

Solomon says 5.27.2011, 01:34 a.m.

Thank You Sir, for this timely message...indeed how can we build a peaceful world when there is no peace in the hearts of men!...may the Prince of peace continue to make His way into the hearts of men all over the world as we prepare for His return. Maranatha! Sir, As your days, so may your strength! May the Lord continue to strengthen you out of Zion. Thank you, thank you for years of Labor and wisdom !

Rev. Graham, I am very grateful to the Almighty God for making you a blessing to this generation. I have peace and joy within me, while going through this sermon. Continue to preach on messages of hope and eternal life. God will renew your strength and grace.

Richard says 5.26.2011, 07:39 a.m.

When you reflect for a moment, God's Word is applicable in all our lives today as it was when it was written. Reverend Graham's message is very true now very much in the same way nearly 40 years later. I praise God for all BGEA has and is still doing in this troubled world to bring Jesus, my Lord and Savior to a dying world. Christ is our ONLY Hope.

Phyllis says 5.25.2011, 10:53 p.m.

Many times when I felt discouraged, lonely, or let down by family. Through the years When I read the Decision Magazine, or the online emails I always found the "Word" I am looking for. We have an awsome God. Thank you, Thank you Rev. Graham. Through the years you have toughed so many lives.

Thank YOU, Rev. Graham! I know and believe we are nearing the end as we know it here on earth, too many catastrophes are happening world wide for HIS appearing not to be soon...However, I do hurt so badly when people predict the end is coming on a certain day. B/C as we know, GOD says, "ONLY GOD the FATHER knows the time or the hour, NOT even Jesus Christ, God's Son knows when..." Blessings 2 YOU and YOURS <3 B

You are a true God send to this evil world and I thank Him for that. I've attended your school of evangelism years ago and went to your crusades in Orlando during that week. I will never forget that inspiring time. Was probably '82. Thank you, Rev. Graham for your untiring devotion to evangelizing the world. Looking forward to our time together in Heaven!

It is all true the Bible tells you how to live your life . Without the Bible I will probably not know how to understand what really is happening in the world. I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIST without you I could not get close to GOD. I pray for all those people that still don't have a relantionship with JESUS CHRIST. After reading this passage, I know now what to teach in my classroom WISDOM. Thank you JESUS for providing me with the answer to my prayer. I love the way JESUS gives you the answer to all your prayers.

Nan says 5.6.2011, 2:34 p.m.

Thank you, Rev. Billy Graham, for the special you had on tv in 1971 or 1972. I cried when I listened to you but was not saved until a few years later. Your message touched my heart. I pray that others will hear and accept Jesus without waiting. I, too, believe we are close to Jesus' return and pray that my loved ones and all others will accept him now.

Bill says 5.6.2011, 1:52 p.m.

I just love Billy Graham, ever since I was a little boy I have been drawn to his teaching. I am so glad my father was a Christian and told me about Billy Graham, his teachings and preaching about Jesus has changed and saved my life. Thank you, thank you, BGEA.

Dawn says 5.6.2011, 11:28 a.m.

Naomi says 5.6.2011, 05:27 a.m.

A wonderful message.

Benedicta says 5.6.2011, 05:18 a.m.

I am so blessed by that message. It reawakened me on the need for me to increase evangelism effort in my location at a time like this. People all over the world had experienced almost all the signs of the end-time. My prayer is that they hear and receive in their hearts the message of salvation even as we are serving and waiting for the King of Kings to come. Praise the Lord!!!!!!!!!

sudhir says 5.6.2011, 03:20 a.m.

Thank you for this message. I did not notice that this article was written in 1972 unless Judi mentioned it. Wow this message is still fresh and applies even today. The fact that word of God is true, powerful and will be fulfilled is very powerfully stated by Rev. Graham.

Toni says 5.6.2011, 02:48 a.m.

It seems that for Christians, the concept of the end being near, has almost always seemed eminent. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. We do not understand time as He does. We see many signs, just as our ancestors did. These signs must have seemed to be upon them, in the present tense, just as they seem to us now. Ever since man's awareness that God's Word is literally alive, we have been in a state of immediate expectancy. All I know is Jesus is coming for His people soon - My whole being yearns for that wonderful day!

Charmayne says 5.5.2011, 10:50 p.m.

Thank you for your encouragement. I will be getting baptized Sunday after Mothers Day. The Holy Spirit of God is with me and now i pray for the salvation of my grown children and grandchildren. My family think I'm a Jesus fanatic. I guess that is a complement, because Jesus is the first and most precious love of my heart. God Bless you Brother Graham! I'm praying and watching!

Irene says 5.5.2011, 8:44 p.m.

Thankfully, God gives every generation the hope of his coming. Hope is a vital thing; we cannot live without it. However, the time of his coming for his church is nearer now than when we first believed. Romans 13:11: "And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed." (NIV)

steve says 5.5.2011, 7:59 p.m.

I am happy and really blessed to see a servant of God like Billy Graham in our generation. He is like Moses, Elijah and the Apostles in old times. I was blessed to hear the word of God thru your ministries, although I am part of a true church in the Philippines but God's message is everywhere to anyone who fear Him.

Linda says 5.5.2011, 7:39 p.m.

Thank you so very much for the powerful message and reminder...I believe that the Prince of Peace has my heart.

David says 5.5.2011, 5:13 p.m.

Rev Billy, I think there is no doubt that we are living in the last days as we know them and that God is very long suffering that none should perish.

JoAnn says 5.5.2011, 4:50 p.m.

As always, Rev. Graham speaks clearly for anyone to understand God's love and plan for us. Thank you

Joyce says 5.5.2011, 4:50 p.m.

Your wisdom, Billy, is truely from God, Himself. I am so thankful that your message is still as true today as it was in 1972. Makes me think...am I doing enough to witness for Him??

John says 5.5.2011, 4:15 p.m.

For every problem man solves, he creates a dozen more.

Enrique says 5.5.2011, 3:32 p.m.

The Holy Spirit come upon us to fulfill the promise of the Father: I will put my laws into your hearts and a new spirit will I put within you. Jesus said: Receive the Holy Ghost.

Judi says 5.5.2011, 2:06 p.m.

This article was written in 1972; almost 40 years ago. Many writers are talking about the end times and I also see many signs. When my grandmother was alive, she prayed for the rapture in her day. She saw Israel become a nation in 1948 and the church of her day did indeed recognize and see this sign. Today, in 2011 there are more signs. I believe the delay is God's mercy in the hope that none should perish. Turn to God today as we do not know when God will announce "times up".

Helen says 5.5.2011, 1:48 p.m.

Thank you so much once again Rev. Graham for your wisdom. Yes, Jesus is the only One that can bring peace. What a blessing it will be to be a part of His Kingdom. Praise the Lamb!!!!!

Phillip says 5.5.2011, 1:42 p.m.

Thank you for this message. It lifted me. I Love God. Reminders are powerful. It is very easy to forget what the Word says when i get caught up in the day-to-day.
