Sowing Seeds of the Gospel:
Who is the Holy Spirit?

Part One of a Billy Graham Sermon

February 3, 2011 - True spiritual growth comes from the Holy Spirit. Learn how He can work in your life and lead you to spiritual maturity.

Sowing Seeds of the Gospel:<br> Who is the Holy Spirit?

We should always be conforming more to the image of Jesus Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who helps us in this growing process.—Billy Graham

Sowing Seeds of the Gospel:<br> Who is the Holy Spirit?

It is impossible to understand the Bible, Christian living, the structure of the church, or our own relationship with God without understanding the Person and work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not an “it.” The Holy Spirit is a person. The Bible says that He is not something. He is Someone. He is God.

There are three persons in the Trinity—God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is all-powerful. We read in Micah 3:8, “I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord” (NKJV). The Bible says that God is present everywhere. No matter where we go, He is there. “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?” (Psalm 139:7, NKJV). The Holy Spirit can be in your heart and my heart, and we may live a thousand miles apart.

The Holy Spirit has all knowledge. The Bible says, “The Spirit seaches all things, even the deep things of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10). It is the Holy Spirit who teaches us and takes us deeper into God’s truth as we go along in our Christian life. We are to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ, but we can grow only by the help of the Holy Spirit.

The moment that we receive Christ as Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live in our heart. Our Body becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit helps us live the Christian life.

There is not a person anywhere who can be a Christian without the Holy Spirit. There is not a person who can follow Christ without the help of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit sees everything that goes on. He knows what goes on in our hearts. He knows what goes on in our minds. Nothing is hidden from Him.

And the Bible says that the Holy Spirit is eternal. In Hebrews 9:14 we read “the eternal Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit is called holy. The Bible says, “Be holy, because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). One of the Holy Spirit ministries is to help make us holy. We ought to be more holy today than we were yesterday. We should always be conforming more to the image of Jesus Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who helps us in this growing process.

I remember when the word was foolish to me and then I remember the day I gave my life to Christ, I had to honestly surrender in order for me to feel him take control of my life and then his word came alive through bible study in a good church with small groups and being around other christians. Thank you for bringing the Gospel to the youth BGEA!!

Gary, the Holy Spirit is a Person. He is a person because He feels. Feelings are characteristics of a person. And another characteristc of the Holy Spirit, He speaks, He prays for the human, asking the Father for all humanity. So, He is a Person, He is God. He's like Father God, Son God. He's another manifestation of God.

immanuel says 2.11.2011, 02:23 a.m.

The Lord is using Your ministry to bless the world. keep doing your good job.

I believe in the promise that is in the book of Acts of the Apostles, 2:39, that God will give His Spirit to the person that accept Jesus like his/her only Savior. So, the person will be baptized with His Spirit. Grace and peace.

Jerami says 2.9.2011, 3:05 p.m.

Thank you JESUS for the GIFT of being able daily to walk in The HOLY SPIRIT....

Gary says 2.9.2011, 1:34 p.m.

Question; if someone calls you on your phone, is the phone a person? No, of course not, and neither is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is god's internet. There is always an angel of God on the other end of the line, "a person" so when we talk with God, we are talking with a "person." but the Spirit itself is like the air which is the source of our "winds." The Holy Spirit is in it and not a person, but there is always a very special person on the other end of the line.<><===><>Gary Sechler

Rafael(Brazil) says 2.9.2011, 10:11 a.m.

I liked this article. I have every day to know more about the Holy Spirit, because He is amazing!!!! Thanks, God bless you and me!

Tracey says 2.8.2011, 12:21 a.m.

Hii Astrid, I read your request to be baptized by the Holy Spirit, and your desire to perform miracles as proof of His Existence. We, as Christians do not look to signs and wonders as proof of God's presence. The Christian lives by faith alone. God commanded in His word that we not be drunk on wine(which is sin) but instead to be filled with His Spirit. He also says that if we pray according to His will, He hears us and we can know that we have what we've asked for. It is God's will that you be filled with the Holy Spirit. Ask God to fill you with His Spirit. Believe He has filled you according to His word. Thank Him for keeping His promise. Give Him control of your life. If you don't believe you are filled, you are not. You are filled by faith. (God said it, I believe it, may not understand it, may not like it, and thats that...)The filling of the Spirit is a moment by moment continual experience. We are filled at the time of sallvation, (this is eternal) but the Spirit will search us and show us unconfessed sin in our lives . We are not to search ourselves, this is the Spirits function. As sin is revealed, we confess(admit it is sin) repent, (have a change of mind and desire) Thank Jesus for dying for it. God says if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness. We believe we are forgiven and cleansed based on His word. Our prayer then is :Father, fill us with your Spirit.

Raymond says 2.8.2011, 10:20 a.m.

Paula, the Holy Spirit is given to every person once they believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, Eph. 1:13-14. Walking in the Holy Spirit and being filled with the Holy Spirit are the same, Galatians 5:14-17,25. Doing this constantly takes growth, Eph. 4:13-15. Prayer language is an evidence and not the evidence. If a little child does not know to pray that way are they not saved, when they believe. Read 1 Cor. 12:8-11, 29- 13:9; 1 Cor. 14:1-18. God wants us to grow and these things will come the closer we are to the Lord.

Mash says 2.8.2011, 08:43 a.m.

The Holy Spirit is eternal, omniscient and omnipresent. God bless you all.

Paula says 2.8.2011, 03:53 a.m.

The Holy Spirit comes to us after we are born again. It is a higher level in our walk with Christ. You can be born again, but not filled with the Holy Spirit untill you invite Him in just as we do Jesus Christ. He fills you and Baptizes you just as He did the apostles. The evidence of the Holy Spirit is a prayer language other than your own, given by the Holy Spirit.

Bobbie from Missouri says 2.7.2011, 3:10 p.m.

mark says 2.7.2011, 2:22 p.m.

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to write out a post. They were a blessing to read. I gave my life to Christ a couple years ago and even though a lot of my problems in my life I still carry I can handle it because I know the Holy Spirit is in me and He doesn't let me walk alone. Each pound of problems on my shoulder its as if The Holy Spirit turned it into a grain of sand. GOD BLESS everyone..

elizabeth warren says 2.7.2011, 09:35 a.m.

Pastor Graham, yes I do thank God for His holy presence in my life. Without him in my life to guide me on my daily walk, I would be lost without the Holy Spirit. So I thank God; and I also thank you for your word of wisdom that God has blessed you with to share with us. God bless you always.

A born again person receives the Holy Spirit, therefore by the Holy Spirit who teaches us all things should understand the Bible, how church works, and Christian Living. Being Baptized in the Holy Spirit empowers you to receive revelation and a deeper Love and understanding of the Lord.

Clifton says 2.6.2011, 08:25 a.m.

Thank you so much for what you do. In coming to Christ I never realized the magnitude of what I was doing, I became very ill once and God really opened my eyes to what was really happening. It is by His grace that we live and he offers us eternal life with Him and I know now that there is nothing that I can do to get into heaven but to accept Him into my life and acknowledge Him and to undestand what He means to me in my life. I love Jesus Christ and again I thank you for sharing the Gospel and reaching many, many young and old to the true knowledge of our Savior Jesus Christ.. God Bless you all and may God continue to do His work in our lives as we wait on Him to come and recieve us unto Himself so we can be with Him forever and ever and ever in Jesus most precious name, Amen. God loves us all, question is: do we reaally know just how much?

Astrid says 2.6.2011, 01:36 a.m.

I aM longing to know about the Holy Spirit and to pray in the spirit language. You say there is no distance, the Holy Spirit can live in the hearts of people living thousands of miles away. Can you please pray for me to receive the gift of tongues and pray in the spirit. Thank you for this wonderful article, it is awesome. I am convinced the Holy Spirit is always guiding me. I want to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, I read the prayer, how can I make sure that I have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Elizabeth says 2.5.2011, 10:22 p.m.

I thank God for revealing Himself through His son Jesus Christ. I believe that He is in our midst. Praise God !!

esther says 2.5.2011, 9:53 p.m.

Lisa, I too struggle to find a church even though I love God and want to share my faith with others. I have a disability myself, and I find that some churches aren't educated about these things so they fear or distance themselves from what they don't understand (some days I don't understand myself either so I can be too hard on them). I've learned the difference between obligatory kindness and loving kindness is about the same as the difference between a lightning bug and lightning. But based on the article I realize that despite our differences, if we are believers we share a common Holy Spirit in us--which is pretty cool to think about. And I remind myself that God will figure out how to use me and I'm already part of His church no matter if I meet with a regular church or meet His church in other places (i.e. on the street, at the public library, on the internet:). Praying for you, Lisa. I know it's not easy to want to feel isolated from the church.

Lucinda says 2.5.2011, 9:01 p.m.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful reminder. It inspired me for a new poem for my website.

David says 2.5.2011, 7:47 p.m.

Thank You Billy Graham and Franklin Graham. I thank you for following scripture and teaching scripture so faithfully and accurately. Wish I could say that about other well-known ministries. And I thank You Franklin for not compromising the Gospel when you go on secular shows. You tell the straight truth and take their sarcastic flack. Again not all ministries do that either. They kind of slip around the Gospel on secular shows. So God Bless you all at Billy Graham ministries. All of us in Los Angeles look eagerly forward to your next Crusade in Los Angeles with Greg Laurie and friends and flooding Hollywood with thousands of loving Christians sharing the salvation and love of Christ

I received the Lord at age 11. Dr Moffatt was the person that Baptized me, in Leesburg Florida. I have walked alot of roads since then, have gotten away from God. But he never got away from me. I have trials but he is there to help me when I give it to him. There are trails now in my family, I pray they will turn to God for His guidance. He can perform miracles for our prayers.. I have proof, we know he can heal...amen...he takes care of me and my family!! I know God does all this for a reason, so I pray alot to accept what he gives me.....and my family...God my Father is by my side. I couldn't make it with out his help and guidance...Praise God in Jesus name ..AMEN

David says 2.5.2011, 1:43 p.m.

As the Gospel of John says, "apart from me you can do nothing." And, I truly believe that without the Holy Spirit guiding and revealing God's will for our lives we cannot do anything.

Thank you Jesus for living in me. Thank you Holy Spirit for leading and guiding me. Beautiful Gentlemen.

Ed says 2.5.2011, 12:48 a.m.

The Holy Spirit existed before time began and did God's work on this earth before Jesus took on flesh. God gave you that are saved to Jesus before time began and the Holy Spirit saw it through to fruition. You are nothing and you have nothing in Christ without the work of the Holy Spirit. Man's efforts are of naught with God unless they originated from the Holy Spirit. God saves, not man. Man does as God commands and preaches His word and the Holy Spirit does the work before and after in all cases. Glory be to God alone!

Marge says 2.5.2011, 12:41 a.m.

God Bless Billy Graham and his son Franklin. They have given me a world of knowledge about God, the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ. I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ and I now have the peace that passes all understanding. I love their publication of Decision magazine. It is fantastic. Before I came to the Lord, I could not undrstand the Bible, therefore I never read it. The day I was born again (which I knew nothing about) I picked up a Bible as I felt the urgency to do so, (I did not know I had one); as I opened it, it was as if the Bible was actualy talking to me. I understood it so clearly, and it was the King James version; later I learned that was the Holy Spirit teaching me, I fell in love with Him (THE HOLY SPIRIT) from the first day, He has been my helper since, can't live without HIM. Thak you for such a insparational message! I love this Ministry, I came to the Lord through the Billy Graham Ministries. Praise God!!!

The Holy Ghost is an incredible invisible performer sent by the God who made heaven and earth...as he taught me through his omnipresentful thoughts ...that he has been working and existed in the hearts of sons of men and daughters of women even before Jesus came in the form of flesh..because the Bible says in OT that Saul was filled with the Holy Ghost. But in those times only chosen ones received and understood his astounding performances...but now in this era..we are living in very genocide attributions, so the Holy Ghost is a third person of God ministering on behalf of Jesus Christ and our Lord Jehovah.. he teaches, he sustains, he carries, and he takes us to the next level with out keeping companionship. With the Holy Ghost it's impossible to have a conversation with Jesus Christ and our Father.....love you all.. thanks Graham uncle.. invocate for us to take a burden to the Lord and to manifest it to as many as possible...

I just want to say "Thank You" for your Ministry and Love of God, through Jesus Christ, Mr. Graham. Today's little sermon clip via my email connection to you and your ministry has helped me see this day, how though I am a Christian, I can clearly see how I have apparantly closed the door of His Almighty Power within me and somehow have inadvertantly been relying on my human powers to make it through my day. Forgive me Lord God. I thank you Father God for your love and forgiveness and the Promise that you are ALWAYS HERE WITH ME! Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord, Amen!

JSP From 2/4/2011 8:43 P.M. What does Jesus say about the Holy Spirit. Read John 1:33-34. In Acts 1:4-8 Jesus says His last words about being baptized in Holy Spirit. In the remainderof Acts it talks about people being saved and Baptized in the Holy Spirit. Luke 11:13 indicates the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those that ask. It follows that we know the Father and then ask. Since the Holy Spirit comes into our lives at salvation at which time we usually ask for Jesus only. Examples of people receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit as Jesus commanded included those who prayed in another language or tongue. You refer to praying in tongues which was one of the evidences of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit in the Bible.

Who gives/sent the Holy Spirit..Jesus or God the Father? Is the baptism of the Holy Spirit really "Christ in you the hope of Glory"..or the arrival of the "person" of the Holy Spirit? Or are they all three actually in One indivisible person?

Jamie says 2.4.2011, 11:27 p.m.

Second to God’s Son, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit is the most precious gift of faithfulness that God gives you and I. That is why those who heard the salvation, originally announced from the Lord Jesus Christ, confirmed how precious this gift of goodness of the Word of God is to you and I and of course the awesome powers of the coming age will be. Reverend Billy Graham teaches you and I that “Our bodies become the temple of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit helps you and I live the Christian life.” “The Holy Spirit can be in your heart and in my heart, and we may live a thousand miles apart.” Understanding the Holy Spirit is three persons in one- God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit allows the Holy Spirit to live in your heart and in mine when we are far and away from one another; not a person such as you or I, could be a person with out the Holy Spirit, for the Holy Spirit is God. Those who heard the Word originally announced from the Lord Jesus Christ became men who spoke from God; and the men who spoke from God taught you and I how to pray in the Holy Spirit and that instruction can be read in the Holy Scripture in the Book of Psalms 51 verse 13 “Do not drive from me your presence, nor take away from me your Holy Spirit.” If God takes His gift of the Holy Spirit away from you or I then you and I will be unable to build each other up in the most holy of faith as dear friends. It is important to always listen to God’s voice, the Holy Spirit.

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, before you ascended into Heaven, you did promise to send The Holy Spirit to finish your work in the souls of your Apostles and Disciples. Deign to grant that same Holy Spirit to me, that He may perfect in my soul the work of Your grace and Your love. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal.

Thanks for the profound teaching on the Holy Spirit. I truly believe that He is living inside of me because of my passion to serve Jesus. However, I would like to know whether the act of praying in tongues is the evidence that I have the Holy Spirit. I do not pray in tongues but would be willing to learn how to if it's necessary. Please advise. Thanks

I Thank the Lord for sending the Holy Spirit to my life. Every Morning I thank Him personally for every breath he gives me, for he breathes life into me. He lives within me and speaks the words of my Abba Father to my heart. He helps me examine myself. He is a person that makes himself felt every time I enter into prayer. He is the promise that transmits the promises of God to my life. His presence has healed my heart literally. I ask him to heal the heart where He will reside. I ask Him every day to forgive me when I sadden him. He truly is greater than he who lives in the world.

I honestly don't know what I would do without Billy Graham and his ministries all these years. He walks the walk, and talks the talk. He shows us a faith we can truly believe. Thank you Mr. Graham. God bless you and your son Franklin as you continue spreading the Word of God together.

The Scriptures say that the Holy Spirit also connects us to God. When we are born again, we are born of the Holy Spirit, dying to our flesh. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, He speaks to us what God wants us to know, and He helps us to pray at the same time.

I've noticed that the Holy Spirit is a small persistent voice in me... giving me direction and understanding. Satan tries to drown out the Holy Spirit with loud, "get your attention now", "this is more fun and more accepted by your friends" types of approachs. It takes a little practice to hear and follow our Holy Spirit but it's the only way to love and true peace!! Amen

I believe in God the Father and The Holy Spirit!! They are in my life daily. I talk to them all the time!! I pray in Jesus name always! But I do not go to church because I have not found one who will accept my special needs children who my husband and i adopted! Does this make me bad or not worthy of their love?

I received the Lord at an early age, but didn't know about the Holy Spirit. But now I KNOW Him real well and I am glad. I have someone who is there to help me continue my walk to a better relationship with God the Father and God the Son. I am going through some difficult times, but I KNOW that my Redeemer lives and He will never forsake or leave me. That's why the Holy Spirit keeps me, guides me and sets me straight. Thank you for all that you do BGEA. In Jesus' mighty Name, Amen
