Power When You Pray

A Message From Billy Graham

January 3, 2011

Power When You Pray

A simple prayer can be the beginning of a new life for you—life that is both abundant and eternal.

Power When You Pray

We are not the masters of our fate, either individually or as a nation. How can we boast that we control our own destiny when a virus can lay low tens of thousands? How can our country insist that we, with our military might, our tremendous wealth and our foreign alliances, are the masters of our own fate when history testifies that God shaped this nation’s course?

We are caught up in a stream of history that is beyond our ability to control. There is only one power available to change the course of history, and that is the power of prayer—the prayer of God-fearing, Christ-believing men and women.

But today we have come to a place where many people regard prayer as simply a formality. We have no sense of coming to grips with God, except for the continuation of a venerated tradition. Yet how can we go on unless there is a renewed emphasis on prayer?

Thousands of people pray only in times of great stress, danger or uncertainty. Christ instructed His followers always to pray. So fervent and so direct were the prayers of Jesus that once when He had finished praying, His followers turned to Him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1).

From one end of the Bible to the other is the record of those whose prayers have been answered—those who turned the tide of history by prayer; those who fervently prayed, and God answered. Abraham prayed, and so long as he prayed, God did not destroy the city of Sodom where Abraham’s nephew Lot lived.

Hezekiah prayed when his city was threatened by the invading armies of the Assyrians under the leadership of Sennacherib. The entire army of Sennacherib was destroyed and the nation was spared for another generation—because the king had prayed.

Elijah prayed, and God sent fire from Heaven to consume the offering on the altar he had built in the presence of God’s enemies. Elisha prayed, and the son of the Shunammite woman was raised from the dead. Jesus prayed at the door of the tomb of Lazarus, and the one who had been dead for four days came forth. The thief on the cross prayed, and Jesus assured him that he would be with Him in Paradise. Paul prayed, and churches were born in Asia Minor and in Europe. Peter prayed, and Dorcas was raised to life to have added years of service for Jesus Christ.

John Wesley prayed, and revival came to England. Jonathan Edwards prayed, and revival came to Northampton, Mass., where thousands of people joined the churches. History has been changed time after time because of prayer, and it could be changed again if people went to their knees in believing prayer.

What a glorious thing it would be if millions of us would avail ourselves of the privilege of prayer! Jesus Christ died to make this communion and communication with the Father possible. He told us of the joy in Heaven when one sinner turns from sin to God and breathes the simple prayer: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”

When the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Lord, teach us to pray,” the Savior answered by giving them His model petition, “The Lord’s Prayer.” However, that was only part of His sacred instruction. In scores of passages Jesus Christ offered further guidance, and because He practiced what He preached, His whole life was a series of lessons on prevailing prayer. Jesus had only three years of public ministry, yet He was never too hurried to spend hours in prayer.

How quickly and carelessly, by contrast, we pray. Snatches of memorized verses hastily spoken in the morning, then we say goodbye to God for the rest of the day until we rush through a few closing petitions at night. This is not the prayer program that Jesus outlined. Jesus pleaded long and repeatedly. It is recorded that He spent entire nights in fervent appeal. But how little perseverance and persistence and pleading we show!

The Scripture says, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This should be the motto of every follower of Jesus Christ. Never stop praying, no matter how dark and hopeless your case may seem. A woman once wrote me that she had been pleading for 10 years for the conversion of her husband but that he was more hardened than ever. I advised her to continue to plead. Then some time later I heard from her again. She said that her husband was gloriously and miraculously converted in the eleventh year of her praying. Suppose she had stopped praying after only 10 years!

Our Lord frequently prayed alone, separating Himself from every earthly distraction. I would urge you to select a room or corner in your home where you can regularly meet alone with God. That quiet, secluded, soul-to-God praying in which you come to the mercy seat can be your greatest blessing.

As we observe the prayer life of Jesus, we notice the earnestness with which He prayed. The New Testament records that in Gethsemane He cried out with a loud voice, that in the intensity of His supplication He fell headlong on the damp ground of the garden, that He pleaded until His sweat became “like great drops of blood” (Luke 22: 44).

Too often we use petty petitions, oratorical exercises, the words of others, rather than the cries of our inmost being. Too often, when we go to prayer, our thoughts roam. We insult God by speaking to Him with our lips while our hearts are far from Him. Suppose we were talking to a person of prominence, would we let our thoughts wander for one moment? No, we would be intensely interested in everything that was said. How dare we then treat the King of kings with less respect?

Jesus teaches us for whom we are to intercede. How startling His instructions and His example! He tells us to “pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). We are to plead for our enemies, asking God to lead them to Christ and for His sake to forgive them.

In the first words that Jesus uttered from the cross after the heavy nails had been hammered through His hands and feet, He interceded for His crucifiers, saying, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34). How many of us have ever spent time praying for our enemies?

We are also told in Scripture to pray for the conversion of sinners. I once listened to a discussion of religious leaders on how to communicate the Gospel. Not once did I hear them mention prayer. And yet I know of scores of churches that win many converts each year by prayer alone. If there is a person of our acquaintance who needs Christ in his or her life, then we need to start praying for them. We will be amazed at how God will begin to work.

One more lesson that Jesus teaches is the victorious assurance that God answers every true petition. Skeptics may question it, deny it or ridicule it. Yet here is Christ’s own promise: “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive” (Matthew 21:22). We need to trust that promise. Our Father possesses everything, and He “shall supply all [our] need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).

God can defeat each enemy of your soul and defend you from every danger. Nothing is impossible for Him. No task is too arduous, no problem is too difficult, no burden is too heavy for His love. The future with its fears and uncertainties is fully revealed to Him. Turn to Him, and say with Job: “He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:10).

Do not put your will above God’s will. Do not insist on your way. Do not dictate to God. Rather, learn the difficult lesson of praying as the sinless Son of God Himself prayed: “Not My will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42).

Many of you have never come to know Jesus Christ so that you can pray in His name. The Scripture says that the only mediator between God and man is Jesus Christ. You must know Him, and you must pray in His name. Your prayers must be directed according to the will of God.

If you do not know how to pray, start now by saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” Ask God to forgive all your sin, transform your life and make you a new person. He can do it today in answer to the simplest prayer.

God told me this morning that I must pray for the woman my husband left me and my boys for. I have been praying for my husband to find Christ but I worry his heart is hardened. Please pray that my boys and i will get through this.

I have been reading Andrew Murrays book on prayer. I ordered it from the Billy Graham Website. I loved what I read about the Holy Trinity...1. God is an ever flowing fountain of pure love and blessedness. 2. Christ is the reservoir wherein the fullness of God was made visible as grace and has been opened for us. 3. The Holy Spirit is the stream of living water that flows from under the throne of God and of the Lamb. 4. The redeemed, Gods believing children, are the channels through which the love of the Father, the grace of Christ, and the powerful operation of the Spirit are brought to the earth, there to be imparted to others. This says it all. Daily Prayer in the inner chamber will enhance our relationship with our Father in Heaven.

To DAVID: I know how you feel. I'm not much older than you and can tell you that you can still be used by God mightily despite your handicap. I was diagnosed with MS when I was only 29 and told I had maybe 15 years to live, in lots of pain. I'm still here almost 20 years later, I too have intesinal and stomach troubles. I start vomiting and can not stop either because of my stomach spasms. I also have Gastropareses causing my stomach to empty too slowly and an almost constantly spasming colon causing frequent and long bathroom trips. I also have severe leg spasms and trouble balancing. Somehow God gives me the strength to get through all this and more and still use me for His glory in many different ways, prayer being one of many. I pray for you to be healed, but if He chooses to let Him be your strength in your weakness, take my word for it, He can and will use you to His glory in mighty ways you never before dreamed possible.

Linda, my heart goes out to you. I pray to the Lord that He grant you the strength and healing you need, and that He carry you during your most trying times. I pray that He blesses you for your faith in Him. Linda, though everything looks bleak, I have faith that you will be healed of this wound, and that you will be able to move forward with the Lord's bountiful blessings. God bless, and I will be praying for you. On a separate note: I wanted to say that Reverand Graham's message has been an absolute blessing for me. I feel inspired to continue fervent prayers for a number of causes. A few weeks ago, after reading another message by Reverand Graham, I re-dedicated my life to the Lord. Nothing has been the same since that day. At the time, I'd written a comment about having been deceived by some whom I trusted to follow the word of God. I have put that behind me, and have offered a prayer for them. God bless you Reverand Graham! You have been such a blessing for my family and me!

I pray a lot. I hope I am praying right. My husband and I have been married for 19 years. In the last year my husband had an affair with an 18 year old. I am a christian and love this man so much. He left her and came back and went back to her about 5 times. I never gave up on him. The last time he came back he got saved in the church. It was so good. We were so happy. Then she texted him that she was pregnant. He told me that he knew I wouldn't be able to deal with this, and left. Said he loved me to much to put me thru the pain of all of this. I have been praying so much to get thru this pain. Please pray for me. Sometimes I feel so alone and scared.

David: These are not just words, but my heart: I pray to Christ that He will touch your medical issues and heal you, comfort you, and give you peace. I pray that you will look up and see His Love beaming down at you and that you are forever comforted, relieved of your nausea, and that answers come speedily to you on the wings of Angels. May the blood of our living Christ pour over you and heal you. May He heal your body, your loneliness, and take you out of your apartment into a home, a home that is yours. I pray that Jesus will give you the desires of your heart, being mindful of His will, and that He will give you Hope, Love, and Peace abundantly. May our Lord be with you now and forever. Love, a sister in Christ, Jennifer, who will keep you in her prayers daily.

Leslie says 1.27.2011, 08:07 a.m.

DAVID, Like Norma, I was also struck by your story. I pray that God will continue to keep you. Your faith is so strong. All of the adversity and pain has not hardened your heart toward God, but like Job has drawn you closer to Him. Your purpose has not yet been fulfilled or God would not have you in that apartment, hanging on to Him with all you've got. You are probably interceding for your son? and others? you are a spiritual warrior, and doing good works for Him. He loves you dearly David, and knew you could be trusted with this trial. Asking Him for Mercy and Grace on you. God Bless you brother.

Bernard says 1.27.2011, 07:20 a.m.

This is quite inspiring. It is a good reminder to always have total concentration while praying and belief in what we ask of our Lord. Thank you so much for this article on prayer.

Wonderful truths from a seasoned man of God. I have witnessed how the faithful prayers of my parents changed my wayward lifestyle and I was born again in a nightclub.

How wonderful is it to know how to Pray. Jesus Christ through your Holy Spirit Teach me How to PRAY without ceasing!

What a wonderful commentary about prayer! I agree that we all need to pray for David who posted below! Please know David that God is with you always! I pray that my prayer life will become more and more, that I would pray without ceasing! We serve a wonderful Lord! May we all serve Him faithfully and more and more abundantly!

Robbie says 1.26.2011, 10:52 p.m.

I pray that God will heal David and comfort him.

norma says 1.26.2011, 3:29 p.m.

Amen to this article! As I read down through some of the postings I was struck by David's and want him to know that I am praying for him that the Lord will give him grace and strength to endure this trial, and that, in His mercy and love, God will touch him and heal him. Whatever happens his life is secure in Christ and there will be a day when all tears and sufferings and trials will be ended. God be with David, and perhaps others will join in and pray for him.

bryan says 1.26.2011, 2:05 p.m.

Amen to the encouragement to "Pray without ceasing." I believe that this means that we should try to do everything "prayerfully" i.e. do everything "as if unto the Lord," rather than necessarily be on our knees 24/7. Still quite a challenge! Even menial tasks like cleaning the toilet can be transformed into divine service, if we imagine that the Lord Himself might be about to use it! I believe that the late Ruth Graham had a sign above her kitchen sink saying "Divine service is conducted here three times a day!" An excellent reminder that God is interested in EVERY part of ordinary life, and we should attempt to prayerfully serve Him in ALL aspects of it.

David says 1.26.2011, 1:00 p.m.

It seems like yesterday my Dad and I were working out together in the gym, spotting one another the weights we lifted. Then he was struck down by mesothelioma asbestos lung cancer, and amidst my caring for him, I was stricken with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome and abdominal epilepsy. In just 3 months Dad died in a hospice hospital, I was made homeless, and my diagnosis is labeled incurable. I need medication twice a day to prevent vomiting that once started lasts for many days and nights-while my stomach hurts like a hot sword is cutting my insides. Dad had communion his last day conscious, and I prayed God would either heal me or take me home. But I'm still here. I moved to my son's hometown, and he helps me shop for groceries - but I'm locked up in this low rent apartment-alone for many days at a time. Alone with God. My pastor warned me I may be like Paul with the thorn plaguing his life, and Christ seems to have told me His grace is sufficient for me also, and Christ's power is being perfected in my life through this weakness. So I pray Christ's power will rest upon me-but it's hard to concentrate through migraine headaches and 24 hour nausea. At just 52, I can't work. I yearn for Christ to come and renew my body, to throw off this corrupted body. But until then, I have to praise God as He uses this weakness to draw me closer to Him. 2 Corinthians 12:8-10 is my reminder. God is sovereign. It's His universe. Serve Him while your health is good.

DAVID says 1.15.2011, 5:19 p.m.

THIS IS FANTASTIC. THE LESSON IS A GREAT CHALLENGE TO US. MANY OF US ARE SELFISH IN OUR PRAYERS. MAY THE LORD JESUS CHRIST FORGIVE US OF OUR SELFISHNESS.

Mark says 1.7.2011, 00:38 a.m.

In this new year I have chosen not to make New Year's resolutions. Instead, I have chosen to spend more time in prayer. In Jesus Christ you and I are a new creation. This is a great article about prayer! Notice especially the last two lines, "Ask God to forgive all your sin, transform your life and make you a new person. He can do it today in answer to the simplest prayer." Prayer is the battleground of faith. Let us all in this year 2011 and beyond take all our cares to our Lord in prayer.

Rosemary says 1.6.2011, 4:19 p.m.

My father is perfect in compassion. Let us always remember this. If you ask him to destroy your brothers life which he created, don't expect a favorable response. Pray that all shall live in the light of Christ. The Holy Spirit is the heart of Christianity. Sin is destroyed by the truth of Christ. Behold the lamb of God! No sin, no death. Life everlasting.

Ree says 1.5.2011, 2:30 p.m.

I have been inspired. I am learning more about faith and forgiveness. This is really simple and easy to understadable. Pray for me and my 7 yr. old and my 2 yr.old boys to be like Daniel and be obedient and respectful and please GOD.

jodie says 1.5.2011, 05:16 a.m.

It brought tears to my eyes and we always want our way out and never ask Gods way. We christian don't like to suffer and yet we want the blessings written in the bible at no cost. Mark 9:29.

Terri says 1.3.2011, 6:22 p.m.

I felt led to read this instead of going directly to the Devotional. I'm so glad. Sunday our pastor spoke on "knowing God personally by name" and this added to it so beautifully. If Jesus prayed, how much more do we need to pray. Prayers from our hearts, not memorized words to get it done. Everyone knows "Of Him", we must "personally know Him" or hear Matthew 7:23 "And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity".
