For many of us, we equate meditation with that great sculpture The Thinker by Auguste Rodin. It’s a man sitting on the world with his elbow on his knee and fist under his chin, contemplating the universe.

But meditation is far from just taking a seat, thinking and doing nothing. It’s not passive, nor powerless. Rather, meditation is reflecting, considering, pondering and contemplating. This is an active, deliberate effort to do something involving both mind and heart. And to follow this with action.

The Apostle Paul concludes his letter to believers in Philippi saying: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).

Our minds and imaginations run constantly. They never stop. Meditation then is a learned skill to focus and concentrate on reading, studying and reflecting on Scripture. In Philippians, Paul exhorts us to force our mind to deliberately fix its attention on God—and His works, world and Word. He instructs us to meditate on certain attributes of God and aspects of His creation.

Think, think, think. I have discovered several practical steps that help me to meditate on God’s Word in the midst of my hectic day:

Meditation is not a cloistered life in a monastery or the adoption of a life of reflection and silence (as good as that may be). It is learning to think of God in the busyness of real life. This does not come naturally. Much of this is found in being “transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).

Without reflection and meditation, our lives become aimless and lack order. We strive for purpose and meaning. Only in reflection and meditation can we examine and correct the trajectory of our lives and thus “live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way” (Colossians 1:10).

Thank you for reminding us before we take our first step each day to Praise God for the day because if you truly believe letting Him nurture you first then you have a open heart for loving and being kind. God is good all of the time and all the time God is good.

As Christmas approaches, one of the best gifts I've received is the "Bible on CD.". I spend so much time in the car running errands, etc. It is wonderful to listen to the "Word.". Remember ,faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of God. There is no better gift....

This is such a strong piece, and It really makes me think. I should tune into God far more than I do, on a daily basis, infact we All should make the effort? As for Rose, I know that Christmas can actually be a Sad time as we feel the loss of our loved ones - So please, let's All make an effort to lend our support to those who need it - Whatever that may be.

I love this piece. Our thought life; ok -my thought life can get me into a lot of trouble. It's funny that just lately I was directed to Phill. 4:8. I have been struggling with a certain issue that seems to present itself when I am least ready to deal with it. This issue is the snare Satan has been using to really trip me up and to doubt everything. Over the years, God has been placing this verse (Phil 4:8) in front of my face when I really need to see it and to apply it. Growing up, my Mom had this verse on the back of a cupboard door where you would see it almost every day. Little did she know how much we alll needed to see it then and for years to come. Thank you MomAnyways,I live in Calgary where the majestic Rockies in the west can be seen from different vantage points in the city. Glimpses of these mountains always does it for me--it brings my thoughts to the Creator of heaven and earth. Whatever is going on with me that day I am able to turn my attention to the One who is worthy of our praise and our worship. I must say He has turned many a bad day, many a stressful day with moments of real joy and peace. THANK YOU, THANK YOU GOD.
