How to Know You’re a Christian

What Is a Christian?

October 4, 2010 - I heard the story of a man who had been down on his luck and was desperate to make a little money. After a few other doors had closed to him, he had the idea of going to the city zoo, hoping to land a job feeding the animals. The manager at the zoo had no openings, but seeing how big this guy was, he offered him another position.

How to Know You’re a Christian

To repent means to ‘change’ or to ‘turn.’ It’s like driving down the highway, pulling a U-turn and heading the other direction.

How to Know You’re a Christian

“Say,” he said, “our gorilla died the other day, and he was one of our most popular exhibits. If we got you a special gorilla suit, would you put it on and imitate him for a few days, until the new gorilla arrives? We’ll pay you well for it!”

The man was so desperate for work he agreed. In fact, after a few hours, he really got into the part—beating his chest and shaking the bars. Huge crowds were gathering. Maybe this won’t be so bad after all, he told himself.

But one day, he was swinging on a trapeze and lost his grip. His momentum carried him right over a tall chain-link fence into the middle of the lion’s den. Looking up at this intruder in his domain, the huge lion gave a ferocious roar. The crowds were mesmerized.

What was the gorilla to do? If he cried out for help, it would reveal his true identity.

He slowly walked backward away from the lion, hoping to climb the fence back into his own cage. The lion, however, with a hungry look on his face, began to stalk him step by step. Finally, in desperation, the gorilla hollered, “Help!”

Immediately the lion answered in an annoyed whisper, “Shut up, stupid! You’ll get us both fired!”

You see … things aren’t always as they appear!

There are many people today who claim to be Christians—who may even think they are Christians—but they are not.

What Does Being a Christian Really Mean?

It’s clear that many people really don’t have a grasp on what it means to be a believer. Do you? Are you one? Are you sure? What exactly is a Christian? Are you born that way? If not, how exactly do you become one?

Let’s look together at some clear biblical principles about what must happen as a result of someone truly finding Jesus Christ as his or her personal Lord and Savior.

When you ask someone if he or she is Christian, one of the most common responses you get back is, “Of course I’m a Christian. I go to church, don’t I?” That’s like saying I am a golfer because I own a set of golf clubs. Or I’m a surfer because I own a pair of board shorts. Listen, to be a golfer you need to golf; to be a surfer you must surf; and to be a Christian you need to walk with God!

Don’t All Roads Lead to God?

Now you might ask, “Why is it so important that I be a Christian, anyway? Don’t all roads basically lead to God?”

Not according to Jesus!

Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Only Jesus Christ—and no other—died on the cross for your sins. Only He promises you the hope of Heaven. Jesus essentially said the only way you can be certain your sins are forgiven and to know you will spend eternity in Heaven is by putting your complete trust in Him. And there will be tangible results to show you have done that.

Don’t misunderstand me, I am not suggesting that X amount of good works makes you a Christian. Far from it. In fact, all the good works on Earth will not save you.

The Bible says, “He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5, NLT).

This, in fact, is one of the main things that sets apart Christianity from all other world religions. All other religious systems essentially say Do: “Do this and you will have good karma, or you will get to Heaven, or paradise, or nirvana.” In contrast, Jesus Christ says, “Done!” That’s what it meant when He cried out on the cross, saying, “It is finished.”

The transaction is complete. The price has been paid.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

If you were to ask “the man on the street” what one must do to be a Christian, he would probably say: “Believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Believe in miracles, Heaven and hell. Go to church, pray, read the Bible and keep the Ten Commandments. And—oh yeah—probably be baptized. And start living a good life.”

I am going to make a statement that may be shocking to you: You can do all those things and not necessarily be a Christian! Don’t get me wrong; if you are a true Christian you should do all of those things. You see, the outward change is often without the inward. However, the inward change is never without the outward.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the elements of this “outward-inward” phenomenon.

A person may pray and still not be a Christian.

Most of us pray when we’re in trouble. But when the crisis blows over, what then? God said of Israel, “These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but have removed their hearts far from Me” (Isaiah 29:13).

You may pray with all the passion and regularity in the world, but if you have not admitted to God that you are a sinner, lost without Him; if you have not sought His forgiveness and salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ, it won’t do you any good. The psalmist wrote: “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me” (Psalm 66:18, KJV).

A person may make visible changes in life and still not be a Christian.

People will “get converted” to get what they want. A non-Christian guy asks an attractive and virtuous Christian girl out on a date. But she turns him down, saying, “Sorry, I only date Christians.”

Suddenly, the nonbeliever is saying, “Oh … praise God! I’m really into this Christian thing, too.” Probably not! And it will only be a matter of time before the mask falls off and his true motives are revealed.

You can live a good life, be religious and even keep the Ten Commandments to the best of your ability and still not be a Christian.

Think for a moment of the account of the Rich Young Ruler in the Gospels. One of the accounts tells us that he came to Jesus and said, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”

Jesus told him, “If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” And then the Lord told him which ones.

The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?” (See Matthew 19:16–21.)

Look how far this earnest young man had gone: He not only heard the commands of God, he kept them. And he had done it since childhood!

But he didn’t go far enough—he stopped short of following Jesus.

The story concludes with the young man turning his back on the Lord and walking away sadly. And there is no record that he ever came back to Jesus.

So let’s summarize. The outward without the inward is only an empty shell. You can pray, believe in miracles, hear the Gospel and even believe in its truth, and still not be a Christian. You can live an exemplary life, be religious and keep the commandments of God from earliest memory and still not be a Christian. You can be in church with other believers, hear the same message, receive communion, and even believe that Jesus is coming back—and still not be a Christian.

Who Then Is a Christian?

The real question before us is one that man has been asking for years. The Philippian jailer put it so clearly when he cried out, “What must I do to be saved?”

Paul’s response was significant, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

Fine. But what does “believing” actually mean? The Bible says that even the demons from hell believe, and tremble at what they know very well to be true (James 2:19). Here are the essential elements of the Good News that we must believe and receive to become a born-again child of God:

Realize You Are a Sinner
Romans 3:23 tells us, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” In other words, sin has infiltrated the human race, and not one of us has escaped its effects.

The Bible says that prior to coming to faith, we are dead in our trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1). The Greek word used here for “sins” is hamartias— “to miss the mark.” It was a term used in archery. This phrase came to represent missing or falling short of any goal, standard or purpose.

No human being in his or her own strength has hit that mark. Some of us may miss the bull’s eye farther than others, but not one of us has hit it.

Why? Because God’s “mark” is absolute, total, complete, flawless perfection! Jesus said, “Be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48).

Repent of Your Sins
To repent means to “change” or to “turn.” It’s like driving down the highway, pulling a U-turn and heading the other direction. More than simply being sorry, it is a word of action. Many people feel remorse for their sin but never truly repent. Remorse is being sorry; repentance is being sorry enough to stop.

In the story of the Prodigal Son, the young man knew he was wrong. But nothing changed until he acted on that knowledge, crawled out of the pigpen and started down the road toward his father and home. He had a change of mind that resulted in a change of direction.

Believe in and Receive Jesus Christ Into Your Life
The Bible says, “But as many as received Him [Jesus], to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12).

Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

This is because you realize that Jesus Christ is the very Son of God. He is the One who loves you so much that He died on a cross for you 2,000 years ago to pay the penalty for your sin, and then rose from the dead three days later. You need to believe that, and ask Him into your life.

Do it Now!
Good intentions are not enough. Agreeing with what I have said here is not enough. You must admit you are a sinner, repent of that sin, and put your faith in Christ.

The prodigal son could have repeated the words, “I am no longer worthy” over and over. He could have said it the rest of his life and still remained in the far country, separated from his father and home.

But he did more than repeat those words. He acted on them. He got up and started walking. You must do the same.

When? The Bible says, “Now is the day of salvation.” As with the prodigal, that first step might be a difficult one to make. But how glad he was when he felt his father’s arms around him and heard the words, “Welcome home.”

Thank God, I am a Christian. I have bowed my knee, prayed the sinners prayer, and have accepted Jesus Christ into my life and repented of my sins. God is doing miracles, and I am so thankful God saved my from my sin!

I thought I was a Christian, for years now... over 30 years in fact! Though my life has not produced fruit, moreover my behavior has produced a life of destruction, shame and regret... I truly feel trapped in sin as the bible describes it, I believe in Psalms somewhere. When you read this post, please pray for me. I need something... I need a miracle in my life at this time. I need Jesus Christ to turn my life into something good, something right for a change... I need HIM!!

I just found you after you did an interview with Nick Vujicic and loved the video. I came across this story today with the gorilla and Lion: what a great example of "if we are true Christians or not."

Always remember - the work God starts in us will be finished by God's power, NOT OUR POWER, through our choices as directed by God's Word. The desire to know God's Word and to be obedient results from the Holy Spirit living in us from the moment of Salvation. If we love God, and have Faith in His Son Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we will surrender to His will for our lives. By Grace He shows us who He is and who we are. Knowing who He is and who we are, we realize that we deserve damnation, but have instead received a great gift, not because of anything we do or try to do, but because of His Mercy. Then we recognize the sinful nature and life we must turn from, but only achievable with the power of the Holy Spirit. We get no credit for right decisions, but our obedient actions will bear fruit by God's power in us. If we continually struggle to follow God's Word, have we truly surrendered? God never fails, and when He saves us we have the means to be Christlike, and the desire.

How bad most of us Christians try living a fake life to please men instead of God. the message has helped me re-evaluate my walk with Jesus.

I was born again in 1975 turned from the occult issues I believed in, horoscopes reincarnation. However, two months after giving my heart to Jesus we lost everything.I thought I did not do it right so I sat in front of the tv watching the 700 club repenting weeping. I felt God did not want me I was not good enough.Duriing my 25 years of being a Christian many horrible and wonderful things have happened in my life. Proverbs 3: 5-6 covers everything that happened good and bad. "Trust in the Lord with all your Heart, And lean not on your own understanding; Today I know the TRUTH if I stay under the umbrella of God's protection I will be safe. If I step out from under HIS umbrella I will suffer the consequences of my choices. However even when I step out HE is with me. And HE is with me and will make bring good out of every situation. HE loves us it is called GRACE.

We are blessed with a Perfect Love. God is faithful. Jesus is faithful. We have everything in Jesus- we put our faith in Jesus for our salvation, and make Him our Lord and Savior. He draws us. when I fell, the Lord picked me up. praise God!!! In Jesus Christ, we have Everything b/c He is Everything. @JACK- be encouraged, I have felt lacking- but found God as Father who loves us and wants us to grow. for me there was correction and loss- but the Lord did not forsake me. His Love is changing me forever. We have Everything in Jesus Christ!! I prayed and others prayed for me. May God bless us to hear His awesome Voice and fill our hearts with Love, in Jesus' Name I pray.

I am now over 40, and have been a Born Again beleiver since my pre-teens. Greg Laurie's message really hits home with me, because I will always remember an example a pastor gave at a church long ago. He said : "Sitting in a garage, does not make you a car". By the way, about 5 years ago, I saw Pastor Laurie, live, and he is excellent! If you have a chance to see him, GO! :)

Sandra says 10.29.2010, 6:49 p.m.

God is good! As He has loved us, may we love Him too and witness to what we know He has done in our lives!!

Cathy says 10.29.2010, 6:45 p.m.

The story of the Prodigal Son has always been a part of the Bible I have tried to follow. I believe that Jesus Christ bled and died on that cross so I may have eternal life. We all at times fall short of the glory of our precious Lord. Hence the Prodigal Son we have the promise of God's acceptance even if we stray from Him. I work hard at staying a christian by prayer and reading my Bible each day. I also know that I must refresh my faith each day and know that God is there for me. I also pray for others just as we are instructed to do. This article let us know there is "Power in Prayer". God is good all of the time and all of the time God is good.

Pastor, you've clearly explained my situation. I have had this problem of habitual sin for the last 6 years. I have tried to occupy myself with church chores but it hasn't helped me much. It's like punching air. It is true those people exist so your article is of great help to us. God bless you.

This quite something Pastor!!, Thank you for allowing God to use to bless us with this kind of truths. I have always concentrated on the part where Paul and Silas were in prison, prayed and the doors opened. Never have I ever though of the happenings before them being put into prison! And also the Jailer's question. I want to thank God for the revelation that He has given me after going through your sharing. God bless you as you serve in His vineyard.

Karen, we must realize that the devil tries to be a copycat of the Christ who has redeemed the world to God by His death. As such, still being the ruler of this earth, satan yokes us to the earth through addictions i.e. alcohol, etc. That missing hole inside of you cant be filled by alcohol, but only by the love of Christ. Read your Bible as much as possible and Christ will become alive to you. I've made that turn around.

Joe L. says 10.28.2010, 2:48 p.m.

I would simply suggest the reading of the Chronicles of Narnia by Cs Lewis if you wish to catch a glimpse of God's Love and the Human condition..............We are all Stinkers..... doesnt change his love for us... its only confusing because we fail to see the depth of his love and our flawed inablity to accept it! Stop struggeling, let Jesus place his arms around you and accept his gift. Remeber, you will never be good enough to earn it.

Jack says 10.28.2010, 1:35 p.m.

I repented and accepted Jesus Christ into my life about a year ago and believe me I seen the changes in my life. The problem is I try to rest and trust in Jesus and just when I feel I am where I am suppose to be, I read and article or hear a sermon just like this one and DOUBT sets in. Dr Billy Graham once did a sermon in Chicago 1959 he hit what I call the very root of belief, its all about how the Heart rests, if your heart isnt it in then your just going thru the motions. I am scared though I am not afraid to tell anyone how much I love JESUS, and I do, I am missing the mark still, why?? what is still lacking??

Bob says 10.28.2010, 1:00 p.m.

I'm sorry but after being born again and reading this I get the feeling that you are saying one must "just keep trying harder" to "be good" in order to please God. We are saved by God's grace(Jesus paid for our sins). Just trying harder to "be good" doesn't work (we still sin). God has already done it all. We just need to accept His free gift, that Christ died for our sins. It's about His grace, not keeping rules. That just leads to bondage and steals hope. God's salvation is simple. Don't make it complicated.

Tom says 10.28.2010, 12:10 a.m.

"if you are a true christian you should do all these things" it is not about doing things. No matter how divine they may seem they are still works of man. Our Lord and saviour calls us to rest in him, in all situations. Self reliance on doing the things of the bible are man's wisdom.

Karen says 10.28.2010, 11:20 a.m.

I love the Lord. I know what I'm doing is wrong but I don't stop. I cry, I beg God to help me. My problem is alcohol.

I know that I'm a Christian, in two ways. One is this article. The second is that I know the work that God has done in my life and that I am different now than I was before - and for that I am so thankful. I am thankful to God that He cared enough about me to love me and to send His Son to die for me. I knew all of this intellectually, but now I know it in my heart and whenever I consider what God has done for me (and for everyone who accepts it) I am overcome with joy (and some shame for who I was before Christ). Thank you Lord for your love and mercy.

Steven says 10.8.2010, 1:02 p.m.

Many people call themselve Christian but only are fans of Jesus. They prefer to be associated to Jesus than other. They celebrate Christmas, they go to church, they pray when they remember God when the there are problems in life.We call ourself the disciple of Christ. We want to be Jesus's follower, not just fans. We want to do what Jesus do, because He is going to the Father.Lets be a disciple, carry your cross, and follow Him. Amen.

John says 10.8.2010, 07:46 a.m.

Please don't wait 15 years into your "walk", only to realize that you weren't walking at all. I was a single dad when back in 1995, I met a Christian lady and felt she was perfect. Her only condition was that I become a Christian. The thing is, we're called by the Lord. Throughout that 15 years, I was just going through the motions. My scarlet letter was "P-SR" Pride and self-righteousness separated me from a true relationship. It took 15 years and an incredible chain of events before I realized how utterly bankrupt I was. Despite my 10 "born again" experiences, I knew I didn't have the love of God in me. On 9/17/10, with nothing left, I saw a Billy Graham Crusade Classic from Miami in 1961. He spoke about being converted and it so spoke to me that I just broke down and sobbed. It wasn't until I truly came to terms with the condition of my heart, that God was able to begin a new work.I remember asking my Pastor once, "Why don't I love?" He looked bewildered. There was no love for the lost, for friends, and at times even my children. Now I get it. I just wish it hadn't taken 45 years! Great information Greg. It spoke to my heart. I pray it challenges everyone to check their walk.God bless.

This was amazing, and eye opening as well! I realize everyday, that I am not sure if I actually repent, if I actually have turned away from all of the ways I used to be!!! I know I desire to know the Lord Jesus Christ more everyday, and follow Him and listen to Him, and speak of Him to others, though I also know that I still am caught up in my own worldliness (the ways I am of this world)... thank you always Greg!!!

Karen says 10.7.2010, 7:37 p.m.

I love the Lord and have been born again. My son I just am not sure. He grew up in church as my husband was a minister of music. At the age of 6 my son went forward during a revival and was saved. I pray that he was. As he grew up he was in trouble and rebelled. As a grown man he had a accident at work and then surgery. Resulted in being addicted to pain medication. He had told me during this time that he rededicated his life and when his wife had their first baby he told me that he knew when he died he would go to heaven. He was given methadone to help him and then the doctor was so expensive he got the medicine from a friend. He died 3 months later from a methadone overdose. I worry and beat myself up wondering what I could have done or why I missed the addiction and wonder is Jason really in heaven. He never got the chance to do all the things a born again christian really does. I know if he was alive now that he would be in church and we would probably had seen a changed life. Why can't I find peace in all this. At times it seems like it can be so hard to be a christian. I know you don't know my son and would know if he truly was saved. He had a huge heart and without going to church and studying his Bible you would say he was truly a christian because of his love and caring so much for people. Inviting his friends to church when he was going regularly. He was missing the discipline in his life. I don't know about prayer life.
