How to Be Sure of Your Salvation

August 12, 2011 - According to the Bible, assurance of salvation rests on four unshakable pillars.

How to Be Sure of Your Salvation

The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us. ~ 1 John 3:24

How to Be Sure of Your Salvation

After I said I was writing a book about how we can be sure we are going to heaven, she marveled, "You mean you can know that you are going to heaven?"

Realizing God had opened a door for me to tell her about Christ, I reinforced that we can know for certain our eternal destiny, saying, "We can afford to be wrong about going to Sisters, Oregon, but not about going to heaven."

The truth is, we can be sure about where we will spend eternity. We can know with certainty that when we die, we will go to heaven. But how can we be sure? Many people struggle with the certainty of their salvation, especially new believers.

How can we know where we stand with God? The Bible teaches that the assurance of salvation rests securely upon four unshakable pillars:

Pillar 1: God Cannot Lie!

First, assurance is based on the absolute trustworthiness of Scripture. Throughout the New Testament, we read God's promises to save all who will believe upon His Son. The Bible says, "Whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved."(1) This is a promise! All who have committed their lives to Jesus Christ may have the firm confidence of salvation based upon the infallibility of God's Word.

Jesus said, "The one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out."(2) If you come to Jesus with genuine repentance and faith, He promises that He will save you. We can know Jesus has received us because, quite simply, He said so! When the Bible speaks, God speaks. And what God said, He will surely do. He will save all who call upon Jesus Christ. You have His word on it.

Pillar 2: Jesus Paid It All

Second, assurance rests on the finished work of Jesus Christ. When Jesus died on the cross, He bore our iniquities, enduring God's wrath, and cried out, "It is finished!"(3) By this, He meant that the full atonement for all our sins-past, present and future-has been made. His work of redemption now completed, our entire sin debt is paid in full.

Just as salvation comes from believing in Christ alone, so does assurance. As we trust in Christ's perfect sacrifice for our sins, the certainty of eternal life floods our hearts. No matter how great your sin, God's grace is greater still. The Bible says, "Come now, and let us reason together. ... Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.

Pillar 3: The Great Convincer

Third, assurance comes through the inward witness of the Holy Spirit. A divinely produced gift, assurance is bestowed by God's Spirit to all true believers. It is the Holy Spirit's ministry to convince our hearts of our salvation.

In actuality, no preacher, evangelist, parent or friend can give us assurance. Neither can we work it up within ourselves. Only the Holy Spirit Himself can give us the absolute certainty of our eternal salvation.

The Bible says, "We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit which He has given us."(5) ... "By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit."(6) ... "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God."(7) This means, the Holy Spirit who convicted, called and converted us also convinces us that we belong to Christ. It is the Spirit's inward witness that persuades us of the genuineness of our salvation.

PILLAR 4: New Life in Christ

Fourth, assurance comes through the evidence of a changed life. Ultimately, assurance is confirmed within us as we see God conforming us into the image of Jesus Christ. All who have been born again will see clear evidences of a new life in Christ. While we will never become perfect in this life, we will, nevertheless, experience a changed life. It is this inward transformation that provides strong confirmation of our salvation.

The book of First John details what are the vital signs of our new life in Christ. The Apostle John writes, "We know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments."(8) In other words, we may be certain that we know Christ as we see within us a desired and willing obedience to God's Word.

Likewise, John writes, other vital signs will follow: Love for other people,(9) love for God,(10) refusing the world,(11) understanding biblical truth,(12) righteous behavior,(13) opposition from the world(14) and answered prayer.(15) As we see this spiritual fruit produced in our lives, we may be confident that Christ lives within us.

Here are the four sturdy pillars on which the assurance of our salvation rests. Giving "full assurance of hope"(16) regarding our personal relationship with Jesus Christ, these pillars provide unshakable confidence of eternal life.

As I told the woman on the plane, we can be wrong about earthly directions but not about our eternal destiny. In our salvation we must be sure. Assurance of salvation is God's blessed gift for all who believe: "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life."(17)

Be absolutely sure!

I have been told if you have doubts about your salvation that could be a sign that you are truly saved. Why is that?I go thru periods of doubt if I truly have saving faith in Jesus. How can I overcome this?

John says 7.24.2012, 01:14 a.m.

After writing to BGEA for assurance of my salvation, I see many others have this same fear. I do feel better about things, and although I'm at an advanced age, I hope and pray I will be able to please God and my Saviour Jesus Christ before I die.

I believe it is the evil one who tries to tell those who are believers that they are not saved-Trust in God's promises that where written for us in the Bible-read them everyday and BELIEVE!!! I am a sinner....saved by Grace-and I walk by faith, even when i cannot see!! Thank-you BGEA for helping me to grow in the word of the Lord!!

I have been struggling a lot for many years about my salvation. I know I accepted Jesus in my heart when I was a little girl but I think you need to confess Him in front of a lot of people so you can truly be saved. When I accepted Him I was very young and by myself so I continously doubt. I am baptized and attend church regularly. I am not perfect but I try to live my life the way I think God wants me to. I need help. I don't want to doubt anymore...I want to be 100 sure that I am going to heaven.

NJ says 8.29.2011, 6:26 p.m.

I recently got saved(I hope) but struggle with the assurance of salvation. I believe in Jesus. But I have to be honest and really wonder if I'm saved at all. I know how important this is. However I don't think for one minute that I could pull the wool over God. So what am I to do? I pray about it everyday and I can't seem to enjoy life as I am always worried about this. Please pray for me.

David says 7.26.2011, 11:20 p.m.

I'm really struggling with assurance of salvation. I have asked Jesus to save me and be my Lord but am still struggling with some sin and doubt. I don't know what to do and am so afraid. I ask for salvation and forgiveness multiple times daily.

@ tim. Tiim you are taking john 3:13 out of context. and "the lion will lie down with the lamb" will happen during the millennial reign of Christ here on earth and after that to eternity, ie, HEAVEN.

Hi, I'm 15 and i've been doubting my salvation for a while since my dad left and I've prayed and asked God to save me if he hasn't already But how can I? believe I'm a sinner to get saved if I doubt my own salvation? I really need somebody's help. Please.

TUDY says 8.16.2010, 3:29 p.m.

I grew up going to the Nazerine church and when they had prayer they always got down on their knees. Do you think God hears you better? Today people don't do that, it seems like they stand because I say my prayers after I go to bed.

Internet@bgea.org says 8.11.2010, 11:06 a.m.

(part 2) Jesus said in John 15:9, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.” As you pray, lift your needs and desire to God as a loving Father, who loves to spend time with you and care for your needs. Whether or not your illness subsides in the near future, learn to trust in the Lord. He says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

Nadine, We are very sorry to learn of your struggle with Meniere’s Disease. Although you haven’t found immediately relief to your symptoms, we hope you will continue to seek competent medical attention, since God has blessed us with doctors and researchers, and medical knowledge is growing all the time. Even though you are not physically able to attend church, we trust that you receive spiritual encouragement from other sources in your home. Endeavor to "grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18). If you are not already doing so, we encourage you to set aside a special time each day to be alone with God in Bible reading, prayer, and praise. Be faithful to observe this "quiet time," for it is a vital line to heaven which will give you the strength to overcome discouragement, to discern God's will in your present circumstances, and to walk obediently with Him. God always takes into account our circumstances, and He knows when they are beyond our power to direct and control. Please let your pastor know what’s happening in your life. He may be able to recommend some spiritual resources to encourage you during this time of illness. And above all, fix your mind on the knowledge that God loves you, even when you’re not able to attend worship services. (cont. part 2)

nadine says 8.10.2010, 9:04 p.m.

I have menieres disease and can't hear and can't go to church and there don't seem to be any answers. Every night I pray to God but i'm not sure if he hears me or not.

Tim says 8.9.2010, 5:57 p.m.

Where in the Bible does it say we go to heaven for etenity? Man was never meant to go to heaven(John 3:13). When Jesus Christ returns, he will rule on earth. Like the Bible says: the meek will inherit the earth and the lion will lay down with the lamb. That has not happened yet.

Chris says 8.8.2010, 2:28 p.m.

This is a response to Jenny (also Jenny, please read my comment I sent to lilzac and shawbeen) It's a good thing to know that along with salvation, the Holy Spirit enters our life and literally helps us live the Christian life. We couldn't do it by ourselves. The best thing to make sure you're heading in the right direction is to pray again for salvation and include in your prayer that you trust the Holy Spirit to come in and help you live the Christian life (and believe He will do it). Also, the Bible mentions that if we believe we will get something we asked God for that's in His will, we will recieve it (this includes our prayer for salvation) May God bless you!

Chris says 8.8.2010, 1:53 p.m.

This response is for lilzac, Shawbeen, and others:Salvation is a free gift, but the result of that gift should be repentance - where you change the way you think (instead of thinking more about everyday things and sinful things, try to renew your thinking by concentrating on Heavenly and eternal things) and then focus on changing your plans of the day to be centered on Bible study and do what it says, prayer, having fruits such as self control and patience, doing good works that have a big result for people, and letting Jesus be first over every area of your life (while at work, free time, spending). My friends if Jesus is not the Lord of your life, go ahead and recommit your life to Him and be sure.

Chris says 8.7.2010, 4:18 p.m.

This is a response to Diana Lynn at 8.6.2010, 11:21 p.m. - The Jehovah Witnesses unfortantly don't believe that Jesus is the Savior of the world. The way to prove to your family that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life is to point to the Old Testament prophecies. In the Bible Jesus' identity, name, birthplace, triumphal entry, betrayal, suffering, death, and burial-all were foretold in the Old Testament seven hundred years before He was born.  If only 48 prophecies about a person were fulfilled, the odds would be 1 in 10 157. That's a one followed by 157 zeros! And Jesus fulfilled more than 300 prophecies!

DOROTHY says 8.7.2010, 02:47 a.m.

I thank God for your ministry. yes, I have doubts about my salvation at times. I know it is satan's work and pray to overcome my doubts. These comments give me new strength. I pray that I will be able to find a closer walk with God and this ministry helps me. I tend to let worldly pleasures crowd out my time with the Lord. Your ministry helps me very much.

Diana Lynn says 8.6.2010, 11:21 p.m.

I would like to know how to get my oldest daughter, Tracy and my four grand-children away from the Jehovah Witness when she was not brought up that way?

This is a response to a post from the name -"wondering" on 8.6.2010, 12:20 a.m.I've got some helpful advice for you that I learned from the book "Saved Without a Doubt" by John MacArthur. A lot of Christians struggle with unwanted sin in their life, like the Apostole Paul did. The key for you my friend is that your repeated sin is unwanted and hated instead of loved and done on purpose. So try to be controled by the Holy Spirit and in a conversation with God throughout the day and when the urge to do this sin happens, ask for forgiveness and help and tell the devil to get behind you.

Internet@bgea.org says 8.6.2010, 2:15 p.m.

Dear Wondering, if you would like to hear from someone who can help you with your question contact Help@bgea.org

Richard says 8.6.2010, 1:57 p.m.

Thank you! I really needed to be reassured of this. I will not ever doubt that again. God bless you all!

Thomas says 8.6.2010, 12:46 a.m.

I saved this article to my "favorite places". I taught Sunday School and had a few folks who believed they could lose their salvation. God used some others to ask questions about verses in Hebrews to allow me to teach the precious truth of "Once saved, always saved". I am adding this article to my arsenal of "Scriptural Arrows" to defeat Satan's lies that salvation can be lost. Thank you, Brother Lawson.

wondering says 8.6.2010, 12:20 a.m.

I have accepted Jesus as my Savior and I try to live for Him except I struggle with a certain sin in my life. Does God keep forgiving repetitive sins? Am I still saved even though I sin? I mean, if we confess our sins, He is faithful amd just to forgive us. I know this doesn't mean it's ok to keep sinning, I try not to and I feel horribly convicted when I sin. Does God punish us for sins by letting bad things happen to us or our children? I live in fear about this. Can someone help?

Jeremy says 8.6.2010, 08:13 a.m.

Great article! I think everyone doubts their own salvation at sometime in their life, but the best way to know for sure is by evidence of a changed life. You can't accept salvation and let Jesus into your heart and life and not be changed. I have seen this through my own experiences and through other people who have become Christians..

Charles says 8.6.2010, 01:22 a.m.

Remember Ephesians 2:8, 9 "For by grace are you saved, THROUGH FAITH..." Now read Hebrews 11:1 "Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see" True salvation is a RESPONSE DECISION to what Jesus did for us (John 3:16). Hence the assurance is not based on feelings or emotions, or even our understanding, but by faith in what God's Word in the Bible says. I am saved by grace through faith. Jesus said, "Blessed are those who not seen and yet have believed." John 20:29

R.L. says 8.6.2010, 01:08 a.m.

It's not that I dont believe that Jesus saves, I just often wonder if Ive truly repented in my heart. Its been six years since ive become enraptured by the fathers love that he would actually make me a son, and yet I wonder if I have really changed very much.

sandy says 8.6.2010, 00:02 a.m.

I must read again. It is so what everyone needs to know.

Jack says 8.5.2010, 10:49 p.m.

I have struggled for years with the possibility of forfeiture of salvation for fear that if I don't quit sinning I will lose my salvation but I haven't lost it yet. And I won't lose it as long as I keep coming to Christ. That's because there is no way that He will cast me out. And He would have to do that before I could ever go to Hell.

Bob says 8.5.2010, 4:06 p.m.

Jesus said Seek first the Kingdom Of God and God's Righteousness. The Kingdom Of God is within you. Do the will of God my Father, you will enter the Kingdom Of God. God is love. God is spirit. Worship God in spirit and in truth. Here is eternal life. Know the One True God and Jesus Christ whom he sent. I honestly believe these words of Jesus are the way to salvation. Jesus is the Word. The words of Jesus are the words of God. May the power of love and the joy of forgiveness be with you always.

Esther says 8.5.2010, 1:54 p.m.

To be sure of vour salvation, one must Repent and be Baptized in Jesus' name in order to be saved. You must be born again according to Acts 2:38 and John 3:l-5 like Jesus told Nicodemus.

Jenny says 8.5.2010, 1:36 p.m.

What happens if you feel that The Holy Spirit is not in you. I have struggled for a long time with this and, while I know in my head that Jesus has assured me my place in Heaven, I am also racked with fear of not having enough faith to carry me through this life. When I pray I find myself not believing my prayer will be answered. If I don't believe then how can it be answered?

Debra says 8.5.2010, 12:43 a.m.

What a great message! And boy was I in need of it. Sometimes my doubts overwhelm me and I end up sobbing while I'm praying, unsure if God even hears me. Now I have renewed hope, and my faith has been bolstered. God bless you all!

Daniel says 8.5.2010, 12:09 a.m.

Jesus Christ has done everything for us, praise God! Nothing more, except that we ask, receive, confess His Name, and Live a Life of Grace. After many years of living, I have learned that the single most important demonstration of Loving God is Forgiving People when they offend us, or we are offended. This is the blockage that weakens a Christian's life, if undealt with. Love, God's Love!

Kathy says 8.5.2010, 12:00 a.m.

Shawbeen, I want to give you a word of encouragement. God is faithful!

Charley says 8.5.2010, 11:44 a.m.

Shawbeen wondered if anyone else struggles with these thoughts? I recommend reading Romans Chapter 7. I believe that all Christians are troubled by such thoughts, but Biblical assurance is provided. I wonder, if we were not Christians would we be troubled by them at all?

Pat says 8.5.2010, 11:39 a.m.

Thank you Franklyn Graham for taking on your Fathr's work in a magnificent way.!! I am a donor to Samaritan's Purse and your work there is vital and has done so much good all over the world!! The article on the four pillars was so lovely and reassuring. We all have are doubts at times when that old devil attacks and tries to strip us of our belief and fill us with doubt. I will keep those Pillars on my computer and read them every now and then. I am in a situation where (Assisted Living) where I sometimes feel very alone.Spiritually. Thanks again. God Bless all of you.

Pam says 8.5.2010, 10:35 a.m.

His grace is sufficient! Praise the Lord of His promise to us! Nothing else can compare! A day that we can look forward to instead of dread! Knowing that we have eternal life that awaits us in heaven with the Father makes me want to shout and dance! If this doesn't make the believer happy I don't know what will.

lilzac says 8.5.2010, 10:26 a.m.

Shawbeen I totally agree, I have been saved for over 20 years and did not doubt it then but I do now, most days you would wonder if I am a Christian by my thoughts and actions and I know I don't let God have complete control in my life, this makes me very unsure and wonder if I have broken that connection.

We all struggle but sometimes there are different spirits that oppress us physically and mentally, but they cannot possess God's Spirit in us. If you are having oppressions, pray and go to your Pastor for guidance. Even Jesus acknowledged that some spirits need fasting and prayer. God bless.

Immer says 8.5.2010, 09:27 a.m.

I guess the hardest part of a Christian is the daily walk in this sinful planet. Like the Amish, we live on earth, but need not participate in it, and thats the hardest part in our carnal nature. Thanks for the article.

After the FL girl was found in a GA dump, I was furious and denounced God. How foolish I felt for having spent years believing in him- Well no more! But after a day or two I found out just how hard it was to live without acknowledging him so I tried harder and failed. I cannot live without him in my life because he gave me the third pillar. It came ultimately not from church or Sunday school or books or word. He lives in me and I am humble knowing that. (dear sure, he is already in you)

Edgar says 8.5.2010, 07:37 a.m.

What a blessing for every day it is to know that we have the ticket to Heaven because Jesus is our Savior. I have assigned the children in my Bible class to draw Heaven according to John's vision stated in the last 2 chapters in the book of Revelation. Yes, we can also know how heaven is and one day we will see Jesus. JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN!

Thank God... says 8.4.2010, 07:33 a.m.

Saved or unsaved... it's a true blessing to be able to remember to go to the cross in all circumstances... I should remember a little more often.... Sometimes it's easy just to react instead of praying and taking it to the cross. Mike TCSD

What a powerful message! It not only shed some light on how to be sure about your salvation, it causes you to take a good inward look at yourself, which a lot of us don't take time to do, taking so much for granted. I really appreciate the article and thanks so much for your insight. Pray for me and saints everywhere!

Christina says 8.2.2010, 11:29 a.m.

Thank you for this article. It really helped me to understand that all my fears about being wrong about my eternal salvation have no truth to them and are lies from the enemy. Thank you again.
