‘The One I Missed’

Ruth's Attic: A Selection from Ruth Bell Graham’s Writing

‘The One I Missed’

It was December 1958. A tragic fire at a parochial school in Chicago, Ill., was being reported on the evening news, and one of the teachers was being interviewed. She told of the panic among the children, the suffocating heat and the smoke that blackened the room in daylight. And she told of helping the children out the window and down the ladders, assisted by the firefighters.

Struggling for control, the teacher described how she had climbed through the window and down the ladder, across the roof and down another ladder to the ground.

“I looked up at the windows and the billowing black smoke,” she said. With tears streaming down her face, she continued, “It was then that I saw the one I missed.”

Amid the pressures of today, the increasing global turmoil—the smoke that blackens the room in daylight—we who are Christians must be alert to the needs of others. Is there a letter that we could write? A simple deed of kindness that we should do? An encouraging word to give to someone who is desperate to hear? Time that we ought to take to listen? Is there someone we should invite for a meal or a cup of tea?

We need to be concerned. We need to have compassion. This is not the same as telling others of the Gospel. Opportunities to help others allow us to show genuine love, to earn the right to be heard, so that we can tell them about Jesus Christ. God forbid that the time should ever come when we will have to look back and see “the one we missed.”

Seems I'm only one of many who feel blessed by the Graham family, especially Ruth. If I could be like her I would feel I had attained the highest in womanhood. Her humor, devotion to her family, her Lord and scripture have inspired me more than I can tell, We miss you Ruth.

May we always do what is right at the very right time, according to the Will of GOD, in the Name of JESUS CHRIST. Amen.

If I had to go through all the trial's I have faced, to have the relationship with Christ, and to walk through this world knowing I'm in this world, but not of it. There is so much more! To have a love of people, and life, it was all worth it. I wouldn't of change a thing. Share your testimony, and let's reach others to Christ!!

Ruth Graham~ She was a beautiful Godly lady. We must continue to follow God's ways as she showed us by example. She was a lady that wrote beautiful books to inspire others to learn of Christ. We have been blessed by her.

I met Ruth at Ridge Crest, NC many many years ago. She was such a classy, charming and delightful lady! One thing she wanted us to understand that she and Billy were "human" just like us, not "unapproachable" as most think. One thing I've always remembered her saying, "Invite us for dinner sometime, we will probably accept." She wanted us to know that she was just like us, a simple human being who dearly loved people. She made us feel as though we had known her a long time. I admired and loved her and feel she was not just Billy Grahams wife, but truly a woman of God just wanting to do His will for her life. She is greatly missed. Thank you for continuing to share her precious love for her family and Her Lord. I'm so honored to have talked to her in person. She was such a blessing and is sorely missed!

I ask God to forgive me for the ones that have wronged me....when they had no clue the burdens and responsibility that I myself was carrying.

I have missed a lot of things. Though I regret the past, I still miss some more. Reading this, I am touched and determined to be more open and sensitive to one's need - to pray, listen and encourage one another before it's too late again.

I love Jesus Christ and I love Family GRAHAM. Before I did not believe in anything but after listening to GOD’S WORD I have the experience to know that only the LORD JESUS CRIST has the answers for the impossible things. Through his word I learn to keep believing in his precious and pure clean love and compassion for my self, my twins and for the people I pray in him. I find that more important than but please friends you try to understand I am Hispanic but I love English to write and speak. I only want to share the beautiful favor that the LORD JESUS CRIST gives to my for being my Savior and only LORD. I believe and keeping my eyes in him for I know he has all things in his control and he be the in charge for all situations I am in. Keep trust in my savior and LORD friends if you want and GOD. Put in you heart please pray for my and my people that the HOLY SPIRIT knows absolutely all circumstances but in his word I believe God blesses you. Maybe some day you will come to my country Mexico. You are very welcome. I pray for JESUSCRIST to help my nation. Thanks always good news because I am in contact with the hour of decision radio. Thanks, I love JESUS CRIST. BYE.

I was only able to read a few of Ms. Graham's, "Ruth Attics" commentaries but they made me think and reflect on my own life. I too would've loved to have known her. Billy said that if he had not had Ruth at his side, his family life would not have been the same. May God Bless her legacy as a gentle and wise Servant of the Lord.

Judith says 7.22.2010, 3:14 p.m.

I read this article in Decision Magazine when it arrived at my home this week. Let it be known that a man also can be motivated to caring and compassion, by the kind and wise words of a Godly woman. Thank you for keeping alive the legacy of Ruth Graham.

Patti says 7.22.2010, 12:21 a.m.

In today's world I think we must be compassionate and show God's love before we can share it. I think the media often puts Chrisitians in the wrong light and we have to prove we are who Jesus led us to be before unbelievers will be open to our message.

Holly says 7.22.2010, 10:47 a.m.

I love Ruth's messages. They are so comforting to me. I feel she understand's a woman like myself, who has raised 5 chlldren, and realizes with God's help, we are strengthened, encouraged and seek a more spiritual life, to be the best we can be each day. I pray to be more like Ruth...her words comfort my soul.

Celia says 7.22.2010, 10:36 a.m.

Over the years I have come across "Words of Wisdom" from Ruth Bell Graham. I have held these close to my heart and they have changed my life. Your family has been a beacon to many. May God richly bless you all. Thank-you for sharing your beloved Mother and Wife with us.

Jane says 7.22.2010, 10:29 a.m.

How I wish I could have met her. But we both have Christ in our hearts is what I know she would tell me.

Jeannette says 7.8.2010, 00:08 a.m.

She is greatly missed. I am so glad she left us a lifetime of her thoughts about her Lord and Savior, and you are still giving them out, because we need those words.
