What Time Is It?

April 1, 2005 - On Dec. 26, 2004, the Earth's plates separated, then collided somewhere deep beneath the Indian Ocean, producing an earthquake of 9.0 on the Richter scale. Within hours a giant wall of water crashed onto the shores of a dozen countries, leaving death and devastation in its wake. Commentators are saying that it was a disaster of biblical proportions. The worldwide relief effort is the largest in human history.

"Is the tsunami in South Asia a sign of the end of the world?" is a question I have heard repeatedly asked by believers and unbelievers alike. It's an important question to ponder because Jesus told the people of His day, "You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times" (Matthew 16:3, NIV). Jesus wanted His disciples—and you and me—to know how to "tell time."

Read Matthew 24

The Time Is Late
In Matthew 24:1-2, as Jesus looked over Jerusalem, He lamented that the city would be destroyed completely, a prophecy that was fulfilled in 70 A.D. The disciples then asked Him two questions: "When will this happen," and "what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 24:3, NIV). It was the second question that Jesus answered by giving signs which would indicate the end of human history as we have known it. I have divided the signs into four categories.

Signs in the Spiritual (Religious) World

Signs From the National WorldSigns in the Natural WorldSigns in the Social WorldThe Time Is Short
In Matthew 24:8, Jesus used "birth pains" to describe these signs. Birth pains occur at intervals of increasing frequency and with increasing intensity. While the signs Jesus gave always have been present in our world, when we see them increasing in frequency and intensity, the Scripture says, "lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near" (Luke 21:28, NIV).The Time Is Now

To WatchTo WorkTo WalkWith my busy schedule, knowing the accurate time is critical. Catching a plane, speaking in a pulpit, talking in front of a television camera—even cooking dinner—all of these activities require an awareness of time. Almost every room in my house has a clock, several of which are radio-controlled, so that the time is accurate to the second. And I would never travel without my radio-controlled alarm. Otherwise, I may be "deceived" into missing an appointment—or burning the pot roast.

Don't be deceived as to what time it is in human history. Know the signs, read your newspaper and be ready. He is coming! Learn how to tell time!
