My Answer

We had a major tragedy in our community recently when three teenagers were killed in a car accident. (It could have been prevented, but they were speeding and weren't wearing seat belts.) Since then, I've heard people say that God must've taken them home because their time to die had come, but how could that be, since the accident was their fault? — Mrs. D.E.

One reason I wanted to reprint your letter is because it underlines the dangers we all face on our highways, and our need to be careful drivers and protect ourselves (and others) in every way we can - including wearing seat belts, even for short trips. The Bible says, "Wise planning will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe" (Proverbs 2:11, NLT).

In all honesty, your question isn't easy to answer; we don't know why God allows things like this to happen. But the Bible makes it clear that God doesn't cause the evils we see around us; we must not blame Him when tragedies strike or terrible accidents happen. When God created the world, the Bible says, He pronounced it "very good" (Genesis 1:31). But later evil entered the world, and like a deadly virus it has infected everything.

The most important thing I can tell you, however, is that God loves us, and even when life brings tragedy into our lives, we can turn to Him for comfort and hope. Remember: He knows what tragedy is, for His Son died on the cross for us.

Pray that God will use this tragedy to turn people in your community to Himself - especially those who knew these teenagers. And if you have never faced your own need of Christ, open your heart to Him and thank Him that you are in His hands forever.

I understand this now Billy, but when my son was taken from me in a car wreck I was angry with God. I screamed out to Him and asked where the justice and love was in taking a 24yr old who had loved the Lord since he was 12 and always witnessed to others. He was active in the church youth group and lead many people to Jesus. I would get crazy mad when people would say to me, "It was just his time to go home." In my heart I knew he was serving God much better here by being such a great example of Christ in this dark world. I battled with God for a long time...then HE won. I know when I leave this place and face Jesus, then and only then will all my questions be answered. I will say that the good that I saw come from my sons tragedy was mind boggling. It was like a stone tossed in the water and seeing the ripples, I could see how peoples lives were changed in many ways through this incident. There is positive in all negative and I saw a young friend of my son who had been denying Jesus for years fall on his knees and accept HIM. He now is a totally different man..Praise God. So even if that was the only good that came from my sons wreck, the eternal soul of one is worth the sacrifice of this earthly life. I rest and find comfort claiming that I will see my son again and when I look at the events of today I don't think its that far off. Thank you Mr. Billy for the years of inspiration you have bestowed upon myself and soooooo many others around the world. God worked overtime on you.

God bless you. We need to pray for grace to go through trying time and not to blame God. He never plans any evil, never.

Thanks Billy, you are truly a man called by God. Your words of encouragement even at this time after the death of my father will also live with me. May God continue to bless you.

I lost a son and his best friend in a car accident about 17 years ago. We don't know why but all the why's will one day be answered but in the meantime we live with the pain with the help of God's comfort and help we get through it.

Dear Billy. Our family experienced the tragic loss of our son, only 39 yrs. old, and a few weeks later our daughter became ill and was diagnosed with colon cancer. Our boy is in the Presence of the Lord and our daughter loves the Lord. Throughout this I have learned to lean on and depend upon Christ more than ever before. As you stated our faith is put to a test in trials such as this, but thanks be to God, He is The Comforter, Peace, and the only one we find our rest in! God Bless You and Your Family!!

for the faults people are doing, we cannot blame God, because if we do not use the road properly, if we do not drive according to the road rules, accidents happen, that is that person concerned fault he got the punishment.

Thanks so much for the healing words. I've had a few tragedies in my life and without God I don't know what would have happened to me. I enjoy the Billy Graham Classics weekly on my local TV station. In Christ name.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: I believe that God does not allow anything to happen to us. We just get in the wrong places because we are being careless and not close to God where we are suppose to be. (My Sunday School teacher calls it "Being in the word" I have followed Billy Graham's column every time it appears in the paper and I have learned about the Bible, human nature, the Devil, and other spiritual things. I have been through personal tragedies with my older sisters' lives. These personal events have brought me to a point where I am more interested in spiritual things than material things for my "ups" in life. I believe the personal negative things that have happened to me are because I have not been close to God and been "in the word" as I should have been. Also, I should have taken personal responsibility for my own life because I made a profession of faith at an early age.

When such a tragedy like this happens, our trust in Him is put to a test. We can continue to question God and be angry (this is what Satan wants) or we can see that we use this as a time to build on our faith and become closer to Him, at the same time touching the lives of others who do not know Him.

Billy you always have the right words for every question, I recently lost my oldest grandson and my feelings were am I to blame God for taking him but my faith in him kept me strong and thank you and God Bless you for giving me peace with your words from God

Aaron says 3.8.2011, 3:39 p.m.

Yes, Brother Billy I totally agree with you. God only gives love, provisions, mercy, kindness and healing, joy and marriage between men and women, children and grand or great-grand children. Our enemy, Satan gives all the terrible things in this world. May God Richly Bless You and Families, Aaron

I am an expert in Driver Training and fatal crash investigation. I have investigated more than150 fatal accidents in my 22 police career. I will soon publish a book on safe driving. It's called Crashworthy. I took the mistakes made by drivers that got them killed and I turned them into safe driving rules. Creating a positive from a negative.
