I've missed several funerals in my family the last few years (which has upset some of my relatives), and the reason is because I just can't stand going to funerals. Does the Bible say anything about going to funerals? — D.L.

Two of Jesus' greatest miracles actually took place at funerals, and He was present at both of them. By being there He showed not only His compassion for those who were grieving, but also His power over death.

The first of these miracles was the raising from the dead of a widow's son at a village called Nain (see Luke 7:11-17). The young man was her only child, and as a widow she had no one else to take care of her. The second miracle occurred as some of Jesus' friends were grieving over the death of their brother Lazarus (see John 11:1-44). When Jesus arrived He spoke some of the most comforting words in all the Bible: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies" (John 11:25). He then commanded Lazarus to come back to life—and he did.

Have you ever asked yourself why you dislike funerals so much? Is it because you're afraid of showing emotion? Is it because you're afraid of death? Whatever the reason, ask God to help you face it—and then overcome it with His help.

Death is a harsh reality, and the death of someone we knew and loved is never easy. But Jesus Christ came to conquer death—and He did by His resurrection from the dead. Now we don't need to fear death any longer, if we know Christ. Open your heart to Him, and then ask Him to help you be a comfort to those who mourn.
