My Answer

Why did Jesus stay around for 40 days after He came back from the grave, instead of going immediately into heaven? This came up in our Bible class the other day and no one seemed to have an answer. — Mrs. E.F.S.

One reason Jesus stayed on earth for 40 days after His resurrection instead of ascending immediately into heaven was to demonstrate to His followers that He truly was alive.

After all, they knew the Roman authorities had put Jesus to death, and that His body had been taken down from the cross and sealed in a tomb. And when that happened, they were filled with despair and fear; many even went into hiding. They had believed Jesus was the promised Messiah - and now their hopes were shattered. They had forgotten His promise that He would return from the grave, and they felt they had no future.

But when Jesus appeared among them after the resurrection, their lives were changed. The greatest miracle in all history had just taken place: Jesus Christ was alive! During those 40 days, He appeared to various groups of disciples, proving beyond doubt to them that he had been raised from the dead by the power of God. Over two decades later, the Apostle Paul wrote that "he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living" (1 Corinthians 15:6).

Another reason, however, why Jesus stayed on earth then was to teach His disciples, and prepare them for the task of telling the world about Christ. Is your faith in the risen Christ, and are you seeking to share His message of salvation with others?

40 might mean longtime. Jesus fasted for 40 days i.e for a longtime. After resurrection He was with the disciples for a longtime preparing them for the task ahead and raising their faith to remain focused on the coming events, the birth of the Church

Heavenly Father works in numbers. Three, Seven, Fourty, already known about. The Universe and everything about it is known and numbered according to the Lord, even every hair on our head is numbered. For Gods own purpose.

Hi Leo. Jesus wasn't un-touchable after he resurrected. Thomas said he wouldn't believe until he touched the nail wounds of Jesus. Jesus then appeared and allowed him to do just that!

You have all met God before you were born. And in doing so, you were all told one thing, you were told to "remember". Now, as you grow to the end of your life, remember, your spirit will return to heaven, where you will once again, be with Him.

I thought Jesus could not be touched because he had not ascended to his father in heaven. Is that true?

The reason Jesus publicly resurrected his garment before ascending into heaven was to set an example for all men: that it is not the body but the soul that lives and breathes. Jesus asked to follow him, meaning both through resurrection and ascension

In the cases where the number "40" is used to specify a time period it is important to understand that it also implies "sufficient time". It rained a sufficient time , the Israelites wandered long enough, Jesus was tempted, He appeared 40 days...

The 40 days are in accord with the 40 days in the desert, the 40 years the Hebrews were in the desert, etc. Evidently, the number 40 is not only a number that seems large to the people of that day but also connects various Biblical time spans.

Maybe 40 days because like Thomas, many were skeptic and not quick to believe Jesus was who he said he was even after showing his hands and feet and letting the disciples touch His flesh. And if many were uneducated maybe teaching them and preparing them for the task took longer.

I understand this. But why 40 days? Why not a different time frame? Say 3 days or 30 days or 60 days?
