My Answer

I don't have a hard time believing in God, but as a graduate student pursuing a career in science, I can't believe in miracles. The world is governed by the laws of nature that can't be broken, and this doesn't leave room for miracles. — R.W.

Have you ever asked yourself where those laws of nature came from? They didn't just happen by chance; they were established by God.

In other words, God not only created the physical "stuff" of the universe; He also established the laws that govern it. The Bible says, "By wisdom the Lord laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place" (Proverbs 3:19). And God didn't just set the world in motion and then forget about it; He watches over it every moment of the day. The Bible says God through His Son is constantly "sustaining all things by his powerful word" (Hebrews 1:3).

What does this have to do with miracles? Simply this: The God who made the rules that govern the universe also has the authority to set them aside. And on occasion He has, if it was necessary to serve His purposes. The greatest miracle of all was when God's Son was put to death on the cross, and then rose again from the dead by the power of God. By His resurrection Jesus Christ broke the power of sin and death and Hell forever.

But there is another miracle I hope you will come to know—and this is what the Bible calls the "new birth." When we come to know Christ and commit our lives to Him, God Himself comes to change us from within by His Spirit. I invite you to give your life to Christ and experience this miracle for yourself.
