Last week, someone found a new baby in an abandoned car in our city, apparently left to die. How could anyone do this to a helpless child? What's happening to us? And yet it barely made the evening news. — Mrs. D.J.H.

Situations like this are tragic, and I have no doubt that they break the heart of God. Any type of child abuse is wrong in God's eyes, and what happened to this infant is abuse of the worst kind. How different this is from Jesus' attitude: "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these" (Matthew 19:14).

Your letter points to another problem: We have become so used to violence and abuse in our society that we are almost numb toward them. But that should not be. God has a special place in His heart for those who suffer rejection and injustice, and so should we. After all, His Son "was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering" (Isaiah 53:3).

If you have children of your own, ask God to help you surround them with love and joy, and to teach them the difference between right and wrong. Let your children (and other children with whom you have contact) see Christ in you. You may not be able to solve all the problems our society faces—but you can be a good example to those around you.

Then pray for our nation and your community. Encourage your church also to do everything it can to prepare your young people for the responsibilities they will face as parents. And pray too for children who are neglected or abused, and ask God to help you reach out to them with His love.
