The Cure for Anxiety

July 1, 2004 - Historians will probably call our era "the age of anxiety." Though we have it easier than our forefathers, we have more uneasiness. Inwardly we are more anxious. Callused hands were the badge of the pioneers, but a furrowed brow is the insignia of modern men and women.

Our chief concern is physical and temporal. Vast numbers of people actually believe that if we all have food, shelter, clothing, education and recreational facilities we will have attained utopia. Many of our statesmen, much of our literature and most of our commercial advertising support this utterly false view. Some television advertisements lead us to believe that the greatest catastrophe that could come upon a man would be to have a "five o'clock shadow," yellow teeth or a pimple.

This undue emphasis upon the importance of the body has created a system of thought that is more concerned with the accommodations of life's journey than with its destination.

A Cheap Substitute
Modern men and women have fled to ivory towers and there, surrounded by luxuries and computerized gadgets, they hide from reality, from their conscience and from God. But they are hounded by the feeling that they are not the people they ought to be, that they are not living the life they ought to live, and that "life [is] more important than food, and the body more important than clothes" (Matthew 6:25, NIV).

Modern men and women have tried to fill the vacuum of their empty souls with things that have proved inadequate to satisfy their deeper longings and hungers. External luxury is a cheap substitute for spiritual wholeness.

Anxiety is the natural result when our hopes are centered on anything short of God and His will for us. When we make anything else our goal, frustration and defeat are inevitable. Turn your eyes on Christ; worship Him. He will never fall or fail. He gives life balance, security and peace.

Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, warned us against anxiety: "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. ... Do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' ... But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:25-33, NIV).

We create our troubles and then try to cure them without God. But mankind's self-sufficiency is playing out. We are awakening to the fact that our spiritual infirmity can be cured only by the Great Physician, and that the remedies He indicated are as valid today as they were when He prescribed them. Christ says: "Come unto me ... and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, NIV).

Why We Are Anxious
Millions of people have every reason to worry, because their lives are so tangled by selfishness and twisted by sin. They need Jesus Christ.

God has promised, in the midst of trouble and conflict, a genuine peace—a sense of assurance and security that the worldly person never knows (John 16:33).

God has also promised new resources and new strength through the indwelling of His Holy Spirit. However, millions of people, including some Christians, harbor anxieties and worries.

Anxiety exists when our basic needs have not been met. You cannot allay a baby's anxiety by giving her a rattle when she is hungry. She will keep on crying until her hunger is satisfied by the food her body demands.

Neither can the soul of a mature person be satisfied apart from God. David described the hunger of all men and women when he said: "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God" (Psalm 42:1, NIV).

A starving man or woman's chief need is food. A thirsty person's chief need is water. A wounded person's chief need is a physician. And a lost person's chief need, whether he or she realizes it or not, is God.

You will never be the man or woman you ought to be—no matter how many remedies you try—until you hear and heed Jesus' words: "Do not worry...but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:31,33, NIV).

A man or woman away from God can be expected to be plagued by phobias, fears and complexes. Why do we have shocking episodes showing the brutality of humans? Because men and women have not had their basic need met—the need of being reconciled to God—so they are unpredictable, untrustworthy, worried, anxious creatures.

Of course, most people are able to restrain themselves from gross crimes, but underneath the cloak of respectability seethes and surges a sinful nature that is capable of the worst evil imaginable.

You may say, "But I know professing Christians who worry and are filled with anxieties." You are right! That brings me to the second point: We have anxiety when we try to carry life's burdens alone. The Bible says: "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7, NIV).

Let Christ Help
Some Christians have not learned that life is a partnership between God and individual men and women. Christ said: "Take my yoke upon you" (Matthew 11:29, NIV). When we are yoked with Christ, pulling as a team, life's burdens are easily borne.

But our sin separates us from God. The anxieties and burdens of life rest so heavily upon men and women because their souls, made in the image of God, cry out for God; and their souls will never find rest, as St. Augustine said long ago, until they rest in God. And they can never find rest in God until they come to the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for sin and shed His blood that sin might be forgiven, so that men and women might have peace of heart and soul.

Christ, being God as well as man, could by His redemptive work on the cross mend the broken partnership between God and mankind. For all who have been born again by accepting this finished work of Christ, God walks with them, talks with them and lifts the load of care from their weary shoulders.

To all who wish to be rid of anxiety, I would make three simple suggestions:

First, stop seeking the trivial, transient things with which modern men and women glut themselves, and seek the Kingdom of God as it is revealed in Christ. Let God's life surge through your soul as you, by faith, put the whole weight of your burdens on Jesus Christ, who died for you.

Second, get your eyes off yourself; focus them upon God first, and then others. Self-centeredness is a terrible breeder of anxiety. Spend much time in prayer, and let a large portion of this time be spent in praying for others.

Third, commit yourself fully to Christ. Don't be a half-surrendered Christian. Among the greatest words that Jesus ever uttered were: "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit" (Luke 23:46, NIV). Even while Christ endured the shame and agony of the cross, His heart, soul, mind and strength were dedicated to the purpose and will of His heavenly Father.

The truly happy Christian is the one who is fully and wholeheartedly committed to Christ. Be that kind of follower of Christ! See what a tremendous difference that kind of commitment will make in your life. You will find that your anxiety will dissolve like mist in the morning sun. Life will take on new meaning and zest, and you will be able to say with Paul, "For to me, to live is Christ" (Philippians 1:21, NIV). Or you might even paraphrase Paul's words and say: "To have Christ is to really live—for Christ Himself lives through me."

Will you give your heart and life to Jesus Christ? Your life can be changed, and you can have the peace that all of those who surrender to Christ enjoy—the deep-seated peace that helps you to meet the troubles and anxieties of life.

Are You Full of Worry and Anxiety?
It may be because you have not had your basic needs met in Christ. Will you give your life to Christ? You can do it right now, wherever you are.

You ask, "But what do I have to do?" Just this: Acknowledge that you are a sinner—that you have sinned and rebelled against God. Renounce your sins, trust Christ to be your Savior and follow Him as Lord. The Holy Spirit will give you new attitudes, new desires, new motives—new life.

Many of the posts said that "I have". Please don't receive those afflictions. Don't take ownership. Fight with the weapons of your warfare, these battles are spiritual and can be defeated. RECEIVE the freedom that Christ provided on the cross. I know it works! I've been delivered from fears, anxiety and suicidial tendencies. I live in total peace and joy.

I suffer from anxiety and depression. Most of my life has been miserable...from birth. I found some peace in drugs and alcohol then 8 years in recovery I found the Lords peace, until my marriage ended and I resorted back to old habits. I feel so much guilt and can't seem to shake it! I know the only one who can give me peace is Jesus, but I also know I need to give up these substitutions....I am so scared!

Wilson says 8.15.2011, 07:38 a.m.

I have suffered from anxiety for some time. My husband had to move to the mid west for a promotion. Thus two years and counting our home in Florida has not sold due to a short sale. Now the comps have improved but due to a divorce my other neighbor has her home up for a short sale also. Now we have to lease our home out until the market is healthy. We have had to hold up two households for two years which has been difficult. Along with that we have been in a very unhealthy civil litigation with my husbands sister because she totally robbed his late father's estate. Due to her selfishness, drugs and alcohol abuse it has been a nightmare. I have respect for attorneys' which are ethical but these days most are like educated con artists and all they want is your hard earned money. Four years and counting. Please keep our family in your prayers as this has been hard spiritually and financially.

JC says 8.15.2011, 03:54 a.m.

Although I have a wonderful family, I'm lonely; Although I have a good job, I feel somewhat worthless; Although I'm a CHRISTtian, I feel lost... Anxiety..? I am saved by and with the marvelous grace of my Lord and Saviour... yet I emotional and physical strength is failing.. I hold most of my emotions inside... and I know I need to let it out.. talk to someone.. I am in constant prayer.. and I mean constant, and I know that my Lord is hearing me... am I listening to him..? Apparently not. I read His word daily, but do I live it accordingly..? Please pray for me, my brother and sisters.. Pray that I will open up to His will, not mine.. to follow his plan, not mine.. do depend on His strength, no mine.. To let Him be the great physician and heal, not for me to 'band-aid' my hurts... God Bless you all! JCL

I love Billy Graham and his messages always seem current and tailor made just for me! I listen to messages from the 60's and they are just as pertinent today as they were then. He tells us not to worry and to cast your cares upon the Lord. As a single parent, it is up to me or it does not get done-but when I learned I am not alone-never have to be alone ever again, I found peace. I may not have a lot, but I have what I need. I pity those who do not know God in these days-it is a cold and scarey world out there without him to stand beside you. Bless you, Billy Graham, you showed me the way home.

We live in an age in which evil and powerfully rich people are causing great problems in our world. These men do not know God, as their God is their wealth. These economic hard times are being caused on purpose by the "Elite" behind the curtain. Put your trust in Jesus Christ, and he will get all of those who seek him and his will through these times of hardship. Thank you Dr. Graham. I love you for the man of God that you are. You do so much goodness in the world.

Lin says 8.12.2011, 5:31 p.m.

Let us all pray for God's guidance in His Country. It is Jesus Christ who will lead us from the evilness that is overwhelming America. Put all anxious thoughts aside, then, and follow in Jesus' shadow. May God Bless us all.

Monty says 8.10.2011, 12:58 a.m.

Saved at an early age, I wandered away from God and sought happiness through the things that this world provides. Anxiety and depression ruled my every thought because sin removed the presence of God in my life. I lost my job in 2006. Determined within myself to make a change, I returned to school at a later stage in life. God's promise to never leave or forsake us became so obvious to me as He brought me to the end of myself. His Holy Spirit began to speak to my heart and in October 2010 I committed my life and future to Jesus. I seek His will now and am trusting that He will lead me to the place where I can effectively be used by Him. I will finish school at the end of 2011. Please pray that I find employment very soon. God bless each of you.

Betty says 8.10.2011, 06:54 a.m.

It occurs to me that the last post here was over a year ago and that those imminent situations have been resolved one way or another; I pray that those who posted have received peace from the Father as they recognize their need for Him in their lives. My adult daughter suffers intensely from anxiety and while the head knowledge of Christ is present, the heart is not committed. I pray without ceasing for the Holy Spirit to convict her and help her turn to Jesus. For those suffering with anxiety and other illnesses, I pray that they too, will recognize the true source of their problems and find the peace that surpasses understanding in Him. Grace and Peace.

Debbie says 8.9.2011, 2:55 p.m.

I am so thankful that I was able to read this message today. I have been suffering from anxiety and worry to the point of panic attacks. I have had much abuse in my life and never had a "safe" place so my home became that place. I became somewhat agoraphobic over the past year. I worried about finances, no health insurance, my family etc etc instead of casting my anxieties on Him. I thank God for His wonderful grace and I know He will get me through this and I will be more than a conqueror in Him.

Cathy says 8.7.2011, 5:06 p.m.

Dana says 3.14.2011, 3:24 p.m.

I have had a long 14 months my husband decided he didn't want to be married anymore after 8 yrs, I had to change from a career of 10 years to a new one that would be better hrs to raise my child, had to move in with my parents because they have hit a financial rut and help support them. I am telling you all this because I had a lot of anxiety in my life until I figured out to lay it all at the Lords feet and walk away. God put us here to spread His word and bring others to Him that do not know Him. We can not do that if we are so wrapped up in our own problems to help others..anxiety is one of the devils tactics to stop us from sharing Jesus Christ with others. I have found when I feel anxiety coming on to stop whatever I am doing and pray. I pray for my trust and faith in my Lord to be strengthened, and for God to put His spiritual armor around my mind, heart and soul, so His will can continue to be done in my life. I have also found it helped to have a bible with me at all times, so I can always go to His word for strength. These may seem like little things but that have HUGE affects. I am more at peace than I have ever been in my life and more able to concentrate on what is really important loving, and helping others. I hope these little things can help some of you that are struggling..love all.

This article has been the out stretched hand of Christ to me. Thank you! When I read all the comments my heart aches for all those like myself... I have prayed for you. We need to trust God at his Word... may God forgive us for worrying and may we be strengthened by His Spirit.

Please pray that my husband will be allowed to come home and that he will remain alcohol free. Also pray for a reconcilation between he and our daughter.

Press down, shake it off;(God is always with us). This world is not our home, and in any circumstance, if your not at home, anxiety, discomfort, are known to occur. Knowing Go is always with us is assuring. If abandonment happens because of our faith, run to Gods family/sanctuary.

Dear friends, I have been remembering all of you in my prayers. I would ask that you would please do the same for me. My mother, who is a cancer survivor is to go for her regular tests beginning tomorrow and continuing into Sept. Every time she goes, I'm so afraid. I try to remember the examples I wrote about last month, but whenever these times come around, my faith becomes weak. I think about the examples of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and their great faith when they were to be thrown into the fire. They KNEW that God was in control -- no matter what. I long for that kind of faith. Please pray for my mom and that my faith will be strong -- no matter what.

Please pray for my family as so many negative things have happened to us. My wife needs prayer for healing of a severe arm injury that is not healing correctly and is causing her to have constant pain and inflammation and lots of depression.

Please pray for me and my family. My anxiety is overwhelming. I cannot share with anyone because it involves my husbands job. I have a child leaving for college. My husband could lose his job and I have been a stay home mom. I know God will take care of us, but its so hard. I have prayed and prayed. At this moment I feel peace. Please pray for us.

Dear Friends, obviously we all are struggling with anxiety, but I believe that if we stay close to the Lord, we will defeat it. I try to remember some words of comfort Mrs. Graham wrote years ago: Give thanks to God even when we are anxious b/c worship and worry can't exist in the same heart. Also, I think about how Jesus -- even when he was dying on the cross -- had compassion on the criminal next to Him and promised that he would be with Him that day in paradise. I think of His great sacrifice and try to be like Him -- trying to help others when I'm afraid. I certainly don't always succeed -- but in the effort my anxiety seems less. I will pray for all of you.
