My Answer

I don't have any use for preachers and evangelists. I grew up in a church, and the only thing preachers are interested in is money. I don't see how anyone can believe what they preach. I feel sorry for all the people they mislead. I'll bet this is one letter you won't bother to answer. — A.Y.

I'm sorry you feel this way—not only because I believe you are wrong, but because your attitude suggests you aren't willing to change your mind.

After all, do your opinions really match the facts? For example, have you ever considered all the good things churches and mission organizations do across the world? Think of the homeless shelters they run, or the hospitals and medical clinics in less developed countries they support. Or think of the humanitarian aid they send to victims of natural disasters. Recently my son Franklin and I were in New Orleans, where hundreds of volunteers from churches across the country continue to help.

Why do they do this? Not because they get anything out of it—far from it. They do it instead for one reason: because God has changed their lives, and given them a new love for those who are suffering. The Bible says, "If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?" (1 John 3:17).

But I suspect your real problem isn't with preachers or the church—but with God. Down inside you want to run your own life, and you don't want anything to do with God. But is that wise? Be honest and face your own sin and rebellion, and then let Christ take it all away and give you a new life.
