I have prayed and prayed for God to help us get out of debt somehow and bless us with more money, but He doesn't do anything. I hate living like this. Why doesn't God do something? Is He punishing us? — Mrs. N.McM.

No, God isn't necessarily punishing you for something you did wrong. We live in a fallen, sin-scarred world, and, because of this, life isn't always the way we wish it were.

At the same time, God often has lessons to teach us when we face problems and adversity. He also can use life's hard experiences to knock the rough edges off our lives and change us into the people He wants us to be. Have you ever stopped to ask God what He wants to do in your lives through this experience? The psalmist prayed, "Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths" (Psalm 25:4).

What does He want to teach you? I can't answer this question for you—but I urge you to seek it with a humble heart and an open mind. Perhaps He wants to change your attitude; perhaps He wants to give you new goals in life. Whatever it is, put Christ first in your life, and then ask Him to help you trust Him and not let the things of this world crush your spirit or dominate your thinking. The Apostle Paul said, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances" (Philippians 4:11).

Then get practical help for your financial problems. Perhaps a wise businessman in your church or a nonprofit financial counseling agency in your community can help you find ways to tackle your debts and budget your finances. God often answers our prayers by bringing people into our lives who can help us.
