Are homosexuals born that way?

: Many homosexuals hold to the belief that they were born that way, and there are some researchers who suggest, on the basis of several recent studies, that there may be a genetic predisposition toward homosexuality in some people.

However, even those who argue this believe that certain environmental factors would also have to be present for the tendency to develop. In any case, other scientists have challenged these studies, and there is presently no generally accepted scientific evidence that the homosexual inclination is inborn. Also, in a broken world, the discovery of a genetic link would not prove that such a condition was God's intent.

It must be emphasized that even if a biological predisposition to homosexuality in some people exists, it would not change God's opposition to the behavior. Neither would it change the fact that through the transforming power of Jesus Christ freedom from sinful behavior is always available.

In addition, many strugglers discover growing heterosexual attractions as they address underlying problems with the help of competent Christian support and counseling.

For a practical guide to overcoming homosexuality, the book "Coming out of Homosexuality" by Bob Davies and Lori Rentzel would be helpful. These books would be available through most Christian bookstores or by contacting Regeneration Books, P. O. Box 9830, Baltimore, Maryland 21284-9830, telephone: (410) 661-0284.

Exodus International—P. O. Box 540119, Orlando, Florida, 32854, telephone: (888) 264-0877—provides information about homosexuality and Christian ministries that help those with homosexual feelings.

Alcoholism runs in my family, so, therefore, I am genetically pre-disposed to being an alcoholic. So, is that my license to sin? I did have an ongoing problem with alcohol for years, was strongly convicted, and by the grace of God no longer drink.

We raised our family in the Christian faith. they all have grown to serve the lord. Several years ago, our daughter revealed that she was in a homosexual relationship. Her siblings disapprove but we love her. How do we show this without acceptance?

By God's grace, I recently came out to myself. A key step is to acknowledge what is there, rather than to ignore or repress it, because only then can we choose not to be mastered by our temptation. I pray for all those that are struggling in denial.

All in our family are Christians. One of our sons is homosexual. His brothers make rude comments and it ruins every family holiday together. It breaks my heart. What can I do? I pray but nothing changes.

I also struggle with the same temptations. I was raised in church all my life so I had the strong convictions of how wrong it was and I didn't act on it til I was in my late 20's. I'm 38 now. I have been married to my child's dad for 5 yrs and I thank God the Lord sent me my loving husband. I still struggle at times with the desire but with my God's help and family I beat this everyday! I sure didn't ask to be this way but I know I am saved through God's grace. :)

Billy, I understand what you are going thru, I am there myself. I don't practice it. In fact I find it pretty easy to say no. Am I still tempted? Yes, and I know the temptation will be there. But I don't want to feel guilty anymore. I even have argued that I was born this way. I don't know the answer to that. But I do know God loves me. I know were you are in life Billy and I too am praying for you.

I will pray for Billy who commented above that he once was an active homosexual, but through God's forgiveness and grace he no longer is a practicing homosexual.
