Does a Christian have to tithe?

Christians who want to please the Lord often have questions about tithing. The dictionary defines the word "tithe" as "a tenth part of something paid as a voluntary contribution or as a tax especially for the support of a religious establishment." It was a common practice in the Old Testament and required of members of the nation of Israel.

Many Christians believe that this principle of giving one-tenth should be carried over to the New Testament in giving to the church and other Christian organizations. Mr. Graham would fit into this category. He has said, "We have found in our own home, as have thousands of others, that God's blessing upon the nine-tenths, when we tithe, helps it to go farther than ten-tenths without His blessing." However, even then the question as to whether to tithe from one's net or gross income is not answered in Scripture, nor is the question of whether to give it all to the local church or to include other ministries. We feel that such decisions should be based on personal conviction.

Other Christians who tithe do so simply because they respect the Old Testament principle and find it a helpful place to begin in their giving. They do not believe, however, that tithing is a New Testament obligation. It is not mentioned in the New Testament except where it is describing Old Testament practices, or in the Gospels where Jesus is addressing people who were under the Old Testament law. Note Jesus' comments to the Pharisees in Luke 11:42.

A New Testament teaching on giving which may be helpful to you is found in 1 Corinthians 16:2: "On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income." This passage brings out four points: we should give individually, regularly, methodically, and proportionately.

The matter of your giving is between you and God, and He always takes into account our circumstances. He knows when they are beyond our power to direct and control. The important thing is that we see giving as a privilege and not a burden. It should not be out of a sense of duty, but rather out of love for the Lord and a desire to see His kingdom advanced.

Second Corinthians 9:6-7 says: "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

The deeper question, you see, is this: What has priority in our lives? Is Christ really first—or do we put ourselves and our own desires first? Make sure Christ is first in your life, and then ask Him to guide you.

Read the latter part of Deuteronomy 14 and Acts 15, especially around verse 24. Once you know what tithing ACTUALLY req'd, you can then discern. It's important to study the Scripture for oneself.

A very helpful explanation, thanks. I'm no pastor so I looked up tithe in duet and found it was even then a very different thing than giving ten percent of income to the temple. And not every year. And it was not just for the temple workers.

I like Rev. Grahams explanation. It truly is a heart issue. Should not be mandated or forced. And I believe we are to give a lot more than just our money, as pointed out in this article.

when you help any one without expecting a return, to me that is tithing of the highest order. in fact this tithing helps someone rather than taking money to the church (read pastor) who may have an excess from salary and other sources and is not poor.

I DON'T BELIEVE THAT WE SHOULD FORCE PEOPLE TO TITHE BUT WE SHOULD TEACH PEOPLE TO GIVE FREELY PAUL NEVER TAUGHT TITHE BECAUSE WE ARE UNDER GRACE NOT UNDER THE LAW. WE SHOULD SUPPORT THE WORK OF GOD

Tithing has to be from the Heart. Giving to our neighbor is tithing, whether it be money, food, clothing, or shelter. Giving of ourselves and not expecting anything in return. Just plain giving and giving and giving is tithing.

old testament everything was required, new testament, voluntary. Jesus came and took the requirements, the handwriting that was against us and nailed them to the cross. Jesus didn't tithe, he gave his life for us now we give ours for him.

The Law of the Old Testament has changed in the New Testament in that it is now written on our hearts ( see for eg. Hebrews 8:10). I think that this ties together the impulse to say that we are set free by Christ and yet obey the Law (John 8:31-36).

Mal 3v8...Will a man rob God? Yes it says, in your tithes and offerings. I don't want to be seen as robbing God, so everything now confuses me as from this verse it seems like tithing is obligatory for Christians and still is relevant to this day.

Praise the Lord, there is no requirement to tithe anything in the new covenant. Under Mosaic Law only food items were tithed. It is the act of giving that brings blessings and not by a certain percentage.

A famous verse to a well known song comes to mind. "Praise God frrom whom all blessings flow". All that we have have been given came from Him. As Christians, we are to be good stewards with what He has given us. We are to serve and honor Him out of love and for the advancement of His kingdom. Tithing, giving of time and prayer are considered giving to God. Alll of these things are done with the spirit of love, not only because its the right thing but because we have so freely received from Him, who loves us and gave His life for our eternal salvation. All that we could give would never be enough for what we have recieved from Him.

I think tithe really is for old convenant, and it is part of law it has been replaced by the period of grace - where people should give freely to the lord being not under complusion. Though it can be used as a measure to give, it does have any relevant scriptual reference in the new testament to be enforced. Jesus only spoke about it at Matthews 23:23 not as something to endorsed, but to prove to the followers of law that there are the weightier matters of law, such as justice, and mercy, and faith which they had left in favour of paying tithe.

God provided for the body of Christ through the gift of giving. In Romans 12 giving is mentioned twice. Once as a gift that only some have and another place it mentions that believers are to contribute to the needs of the saints. Meaning as a believer, and I see someone in need I cannot in Christian conscience turn my back on them. So Paul is not repeating himself when he mentions the "gift" and then later the Christian duty to help those in need. So to say all must pay tithes is not consistent with New Testament church doctrine.

The law is not of faith.

Me as a minister, do i teach that people have to tithe, or that they should tithe? Please help with some direction.

I think the first recorded incident of giviing a tenth was pre-law, when Abraham gave to Melchezedek after the slaughter of the kings who had carried away Lot. It was therefore an Act of Faith and we are blesses together with Abraham whenever we give a tithe in Faith. Malachi 3v10 has a promise attached to it and considering that we are also grafted into Israel, we can claim these promises through Christ, a descendant of David.. seed through the patriachs of Abraham. Faithful tithing always brings results as it is part of giving which we can link to Luke 6v38. I think as long as we give/plant in God's fertile field we can never lack the blessing of sowing and reaping. Even on my father's small farm the sowing times were always filled with tears when we were still young but harvest time was always celebration and noone ever remembered the sowing in tears. When we were older we loved to work the farm expecting our school fees and share of new clothing and we did the sowing with no compulsion because we understood the principles involved. We took over our father's role to enforce early rising times upon our younger siblings who took it badly. It takes quite some time to get to Christian maturity were giving/whether tithing or otherwise is a joy and a priviledge to sow in God's field which can not fail. But it must be done by faith for whaterver is not done by Faith is sin. Never the less the principle of sowing any seed .
