The Day Billy Graham Found Christ

November 1, 2011 - On November 1, 1934, a few days before his 16th birthday, Billy Graham yielded his life to Jesus Christ at a Mordecai Ham revival in Charlotte, N.C. The following information is excerpted from a booklet written by Edward E. Ham, the nephew of the preacher who led Billy to Christ.

The world already knows that Dr. Graham was converted during a meeting conducted by Dr. Mordecai Ham in Charlotte, N.C., in 1934, but some people do not know that a group of laymen, including W.F. Graham, Billy’s father, and T.W. Wilson, Sr., father of Graham’s associate evangelist, Grady, promoted the campaign.

Billy Graham has told the story of his conversion in numerous publications. Dr. Ham’s version, as confirmed by Billy’s father and by Grady Wilson, adds a few interesting details.

Dr. Ham relates: “Two young high school boys attended our meeting. They thought that everything I said was directed their way; so they decided to take seats in the choir, where I couldn't point my finger at them. They didn't pretend to be singers, but they wanted to be behind me."

Grady Wilson agreed, "Neither of us could sing."

Dr. Ham continues, "One night a man spoke to them during the invitation and said, 'Come on; let's go up front.' Billy and Grady both went to the altar. Billy was saved, and Grady dedicated his life to Christian service."

In telling of his experience later, Billy recalls how, on first attending the services of our meeting, he was impressed with the crowd. He had never seen such a crowd, nor such a big preacher ... and fighter ... and soon had all he wanted. Billy didn't like being told that he was lost and going to hell.

He got out as soon as he could and said, "I am through," but he was miserable all night and all the next day and admits, "I couldn't get there soon enough the next night!"

In Billy Graham's thinking, at that time, his hero was Babe Ruth. So far as he was concerned, nobody ever attended revivals like ours except a lot of old, effeminate men and crazy women and children. Our meeting changed his hero from Babe Ruth to Jesus Christ.

I recall I told Billy and Grady, after they came forward, to sit in the preachers' section. Billy sat there for two months. The Lord seemed to be directing in everything, and what took place during the meeting didn't seem to have an earthly explanation!

Dear Billy Graham, I know I am too small to write this (I'm 11 years old) but I know that Christ is in my heart and will save me in times of trouble. Your words helped me get closer to him. I'm even doing a report on you! God Bless You! =)

I have loved Reverend Billy Graham for years. His words and preaching has given me great comfort. I accepted Jesus Christ at the age of 8 years old in 1953. I have just completed Rev.Grahams book, Nearing Home and I can relate to what he has said. God bless you Billy Graham and know that I love you in the Lord and will see you in heaven. Bless you.

Haven't personally watched Mr. Graham's videos but thanks to the one who compiled BG's life in pictures. Watching it I was crying up until reading the last comment. I am deeply touched seeing the pictures, I know it's not all that there is but it gave me an overwhelming sense of God's presence and goodness. BG exemplified a life of full surrender, passion and love for God that in turn translates to love for the lost-- the very heartbeat of God. Thanks Mr. Graham, you are an inspiration and I pray that what you began will continue to bless nations and generations. I believe that God will let that legacy live on for years. All glory to Him! More power to your ministry!

I thank you, Jesus, for entering Billy Graham's heart and taking over his soul for Your sake. God bless you, Reverend Graham ... you have been a blessing to millions. God shines through you! Babe Ruth was great... but as you know, God is Greater! One day you and Ruth will be together again along with God and the angels. Keep an eye on us all! God be with you always!

Dr. Graham, I just love you and thank you for your faithful and unending service to our Lord Jesus Christ. How you have impacted His Kingdom by doing His work all these years is absolutely phenomenal and how the Lord has used you has been a mighty, mighty work. God bless you always and may your good health be always with you.

My friends and I watched the Billy Graham movies and crusades in the 70's. They continue to have a profound affect on our lives as we enter our 50's. Even strangers who are my age easily remember them. Thank you, thank you, Mr. Graham for faithfulness, wisdom, and humility. Your character speaks almost more to us now - in this age - than even the movies did.

I thank the Lord for you and your 93 years of service. Your ministry began with a dream. God converted that dream to bring you the most fulfillment in your life. You've hit that home run and the people in the stands are giving you a standing ovation. Jesus came alive for me when I was five years old. I know very young but I still remember that night. He's never left me and I love him so. We all love you too. So wonderful to hear Franklin tell about the plans for Internet Ministry. Oh I can't wait. I already get your emails so keep me informed. Isn't it good to trust in Jesus, Just to take him at his word. Precious Jesus.

I am now seventy years old from Glasgow Scotland. I still remember the night well over fifty years ago when mother came home from one of your meetings to tell us that she had found Christ and was born again, she kept to her faith and through her I too became a Christian
