Why We Should Still Honor America

Honoring America and God on July 4

July 1, 2011 - As the turbulent '60s concluded and a new decade began, Billy Graham appeared at a July 4th event in Washington, D.C. called Honor America Day.

Why We Should Still Honor America

We may be a vastly different people today than we were 200 years ago. ... But of this we can be sure. God has not changed and His laws have not changed.

Why We Should Still Honor America

More than 400,000 people attended, while millions watched on television or heard it on the radio in 123 other countries.

Bob Hope, Dinah Shore, Jack Benny, Glen Campbell, The New Christy Minstrels and Teresa Graves were among those who performed that day.

According to liner notes on an album produced after the event, Honor America Day was denounced by the extreme right and the extreme left, but was supported by ordinary Americans, “rich and poor, black and white, Republicans and Democrats, Christians and Jews.”

The idea reportedly stemmed from a telephone conversation between Billy Graham and Hobart Lewis, editor-in-chief of the Reader’s Digest, with hotel executive J. Willard Marriott later taking over the bulk of organizational work.

Organizers hoped the event would provide an “antidote for the poisons of defeatism, cynicism, and disillusionment that boil[ed] from the wells of America’s unsolved problems.”

One commentator noted that Dr. Graham’s message was a “moving, articulate plea for unity, faith and courage amid the strife of the '70s.”

Read Part of Mr. Graham's Message:

"Pericles built a civilization upon culture and it failed. Caesar built a civilization upon power and it failed. Our forefathers founded the United States upon faith in God, and our country will survive only as it honors God.

"Our nation was built on a foundation of moral law, in which a person’s rights were also balanced by a person’s responsibilities. Why should I, as a citizen of heaven and a Christian minister, join in honoring any secular state?

"The Bible says, 'Honor the nation.' As a Christian or a Jew, or as an atheist, we have a responsibility to an America that has always stood for liberty, protection and opportunity.

"There are many reasons why we honor America today. America has opened her heart and her doors to the distressed and persecuted of the world. America has been the most generous nation in history. We have shared our wealth and our faith with a world in need.

"America has never hidden her problems and faults. With our freedom of the press and open communication system we do not sweep our sins under the rug. America defends the right of her citizens to dissent. Dissent is the hallmark of our priceless freedoms. But when dissent takes violent forms it becomes anarchy."

"We may be a vastly different people today than we were two hundred years ago. Our society is far more complex, more pluralistic. But of this we can be sure. God has not changed and His laws have not changed.

"He is still a God of love and mercy. But He is also a God of righteousness and judgment. Any individual or nation, which ignores His moral and spiritual laws, will ultimately face His judgment."

I believe that God has blessed this nation in many ways in large part because of our support for Israel. It appears to me today that the policy toward Israel has changed. I believe the word of God that He will bless those that bless Israel and curse those that curse Israel. I think we need to pray that God will forgive our nation and turn the nation around to again love and bless Israel in any way possible.

Our country is letting the media tell non believers what to think and what values to live. Our elected officials, are no longer worried about right or wrong. They just want to be re elected. Please God, we do want to be one nation under God. Help our nation to wake up, and see your light.

Thanks for this excerpt, I wish it was a current message to remind us today of what we have even with our current faults. We need to be centered again as a nation, but I do see some positive turns as a nation back to a gracious God.

I'm encouraged! We still have Christians in U.S.! Tonight Charles Stanley asked for people to stand to commit to pray for America for 140 days. TV watchers were to write "yes" to www intouch.org. site. Evidently it's overloaded...I couldn't get thru. :o) I'll wait!

Alexander says 7.3.2010, 8:01 p.m.

This gave me a new found confidence in our nation and I hope that despite out many problems that we face and the secularism that is taking shape in many places we will move forward as a nation of God and not ever forget that we are a nation of God.

Go ahead Christian America, do it. Just do it. It's OK to pray for American and the rapture at the same time! The Americans in the post rapture era will need all the help they can get! Jesus who? They know! Get right or get left.......behind!!!

Bev says 7.3.2010, 10:03 a.m.

A major problem in the United States of America today lies in its political leadership. Our leaders no longer openly support and recommend the Christian way of life, rather they are doing everything to oppose the moral values our Country was founded upon. No efforts are made to counter all the movements to remove those values from our society. Our churches and ministers are unable to fight off all the attacks against Christianity. Until our political leaders take a positive stand of support and work to reinvigorate the Christian foundation our nation was founded on sadly our nation will continue to rapidly lose Gods support and respect/leadership in the world. Each of us must pray diligently that God will once again rule our Nation through our churches and leaders.

Joabe says 7.3.2010, 09:49 a.m.

I'm Brazilian and I live in Brazil. Every day I access this site and I read "Daily Devotion". Billy Graham is a example, while many ministers use the gospel to get rich, he preaches Christ. May God bless you!

Diane says 7.3.2010, 08:54 a.m.

I am so glad to be a Christian. I get frustrated at the things I see around me. But I know I can go to the Lord and talk to him. I would love to see a Great Revival come to this nation.

Mary says 7.3.2010, 08:30 a.m.

Billy Graham is the most ambitious Christian I've known. May God continue to use him in His glory. Praise God for all he's done. GOD BLESS YOU.........

Joan says 7.3.2010, 07:32 a.m.

God please forgive America for her greed and injustice, guide and lead us again dear Lord.

Christopher says 7.3.2010, 07:12 a.m.

Thank God for Billy Graham. He has been a faithful servant for many, many years. God has used him mightily to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the nations around the world.

Brenda says 7.3.2010, 03:10 a.m.

I was so glad to hear this! I was a little girl at the time and do not remember it then, so this was really special. God bless it to all who hear and see .

Erick says 7.2.2010, 10:56 p.m.

God Bless America and America should be thankful to God for that blessing. If America realizes a simple act of Faith and Respect in God and His Son Jesus, who was sent for our Salvation, to resurrect our dead bodies to live freely in Paradise; Life here will also be good. God is Loving, In Jesus he did not make fire come down from heaven as Elijah did, He made sick people well again and raised dead people to life, including himself. His interest lies squarely in Us, not our machines. Thank You Jesus :)

granny says 7.2.2010, 10:45 p.m.

Oh, my... on the eve of the death of our land of the free and home of the brave, could it be that we have given in or given up? I join one of the most respected and Godly men of our time, Dr. Billy Graham, in a final plea for Americans to never, never, never give in! Let's stand together, then get on our knees, ask God to forgive us and help us as a nation to seek His Face. And never give in to anything less! I pray I may express how I feel... God help your people to stand up for what is right in your sight.

Yvonne says 7.2.2010, 9:17 p.m.

I would rather be an American than a citizen of any other country, but my first citizenship is in the kingdom of God, and heaven is my ultimate home.

Shawnda Tague says 7.2.2010, 9:03 p.m.

Mr. Billy Graham, when I was 3 years old I remember my Mom watching you on tv and I remember asking Jesus into my heart that night. Again, in my early teens I asked Jesus into my heart and have been a Christian ever since. My husband, I and our family have served the Lord for many years and we keep growing in our faith daily. I'm in my mid-forties now, married 26 years and our marriage is still going strong. I thank God for those blessings. I thank God for you, a wonderful Christian example of serving God with all you have (though I always look to Christ first) in our current world. You are very loved and respected. God Bless You, Always!!

Robert Kutter says 7.2.2010, 3:30 p.m.

I am glad I am in America of United States, because it belongs to God as we are under the Flag as a nation. I am thankful that I am on the freedom of worshipping God through Jesus that many other countries do not have any an opportunity to worship Jesus. Let our American reveals its honor what God wants us to do for God's sake of His name. So that other countries can worship God through Jesus as well.

Tommy says 7.2.2010, 2:09 p.m.

Next to the Apostle Paul, Billy Graham is the greatest Christian who ever lived. Tommy

glenda says 7.2.2010, 12:49 a.m.
