Rising Above Clouds of Discouragement

Words of Encouragement from Billy Graham

January 17, 2011 - My home in North Carolina is on a mountain nearly 4,000 feet high. Many times we can see below us the clouds in the valley. Sometimes thunderstorms come up, and we can see the lightning flash and hear the thunder roar down below, while we are enjoying beautiful sunlight and clear skies above.

Rising Above Clouds of Discouragement

Many times I have sat on the front porch and watched the clouds below. I have thought of the clouds of discouragement and suffering that temporarily veil the sunlight of God’s love. You may have a cloud hanging over your life. You may be in a hospital bed or you may be suffering discouragement and bereavement.

The Bible has a great deal to say about clouds, for they are symbolic of the spiritual forces that obscure the face of God. The Bible indicates that clouds are given to us for a purpose, that there is glory in the clouds. In Exodus 16:10 we read, “They looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.” Without the clouds there would be no shield from the burning sun. There would be no lavish sunsets; no rain; no light; no beautiful, picturesque landscapes.

Often when we board an airplane, the sky is overcast. But as the plane climbs up through the clouds, we emerge into a sun-drenched world far above the dismal and disappointing things of Earth. If we could only see our clouds from the other side, as we do when flying above them in an airplane, their radiant magnificence would take our breath and our worries away. These same clouds that are hanging low in your life, and look so dark from the underside, would look totally different if you could see them from God’s vantage point.

I want to remind you of some of the clouds that hide from you the beauty of the face of God.
First, there is the cloud of suffering. I received a letter from a woman suffering on a hospital bed in the last stages of cancer. She did not ask that God would relieve her of suffering or raise her up, but only that God’s grace would be sufficient through the trial of suffering.

The Bible teaches that human suffering is an integral part of life. Job said, “Man who is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble” (Job 14:1). Our life has its beginning in suffering. Life’s span is marked by pain and tragedy, and our lives terminate with the enemy called death. The person who expects to escape the pangs of suffering and disappointment simply has no knowledge of the Bible, history or life.

To this dear woman on her hospital bed I would say, “Look toward Heaven, look beyond the clouds, and you will see that the sufferings you are undergoing here are nothing compared to the glory that God has prepared for you there.”

Tell me why the gardener trims and prunes his rosebushes, sometimes cutting away productive branches, and I will tell you why God’s people are afflicted. God’s hand never slips. He never makes a mistake. His every move is for our ultimate good. The knowledge of this caused Paul to sing, “Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

My beloved suffering saint, everything is under control. His will for you is being wrought in the whirlwind and in the storm, and His blessed presence is in every cloud of distress that crosses your pathway. The Master Gardener is purging your life so that you might bring forth more fruit and more glory to Christ in this world and in the world to come.

Another cloud that obscures the sun and distresses us is the cloud of discouragement. Many of the great Bible heroes became discouraged: Moses in the Sinai desert, Elijah when he heard Jezebel was searching for him to take his life, and David when his son Absalom rebelled against him.

Discouragement often comes when we don’t get our own way or when things don’t work out the way we want them to. The children of Israel thought that because they were God’s children they should be spared adversity and trouble, that Canaan should be captured without a struggle. But this was not God’s plan. It never is. We must be willing to die to self before we can know the real meaning of life. We must often bleed before we can be blessed, and a cross must be endured before the crown is to be worn.

Discouragement is the very opposite of faith. It is Satan’s device to try to thwart the work of God in your life. Discouragement blinds our eyes to the mercy of God and makes us perceive only the unfavorable circumstances.

There is only one way to dispel the blighting cloud of discouragement. If you are counting on your own strength and ingenuity, you are doomed to continued discouragement. But the Bible says, “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14).

I have never met a person who spent time in daily prayer and in the study of the Word of God and was strong in faith who was ever discouraged for very long.

Third, there is the cloud of disappointment. I received a letter from a 19-year-old girl on the West Coast whose fiancé had just broken off their engagement. Her heart was crushed, and life no longer seemed worth living. I wrote to tell her that it is not always easy to trace God’s designs in our ill-planned hopes and dreams. But rest assured that if we are called according to His purpose, and if we love God, all things do work together for good. Who are we to dictate which way the winds of Providence shall blow, or how the Pilot of life shall maneuver our ship through life’s storms? The psalmist said, “He … guided them by the skillfulness of his hands” (Psalm 78:72).

Yes, clouds will come. They are part of the fabric of life. But by God’s grace we need not be depressed by their presence. Like the misty billows that float above us, they protect us from the brightness of the sun; they reveal the glory of God, and from their lofty height God speaks to us. Like the children of Israel, we are travelers to the Promised Land. As the Israelites traveled through the wilderness, the Bible says, “The Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way” (Exodus 13:21).

One of the best ways to get rid of discouragement is to remember that Christ is coming again. The most thrilling, glorious truth in the world is the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. When we see pessimism on every side, we should remember the Bible is the only book in the world that accurately predicts the future. The Bible is more current than tomorrow morning’s newspaper! And the Bible says the consummation of all things will be the coming again of Jesus Christ.

Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. … I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:1-3).

If your life is dark, depressing and gloomy today, Christ can turn your dark clouds inside out. The sunlight of His love can still shine into the darkest part of your life. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12).

Being a "newbie" I am often discouraged. But I now know that these times give me the opportunity to strengthen my faith and patience, thereby glorifying God.

Discouragement comes and goes in my life. It feels it is never far behind me. I know the enemy wants to use discouragement to keep me from worshiping God, to see the many blessings I do have, beyond the problems I suffer today or in the future. All I know is that discouragement is one tool Satan uses to get me off tract.

Sir, you are an inspiration to the whole christian community, even to the non-believers. You have done big things to our lives by your ministry. Thank you so much. I hope someday I can see and hear you preach in person. Please help me pray for my family to grow more stronger in faith, and help us pray also to be strong in trials, problems and hardship that has come to our life. Thank you so much for being there, helping God's people.

It is life changing to know that we have a Saviour who knows our every mood and that His love can penetrate any discouragement.

I really needed to hear this message today. I don't always get to read my e-mails the day they're sent, but if its just a few days later, the message touches my heart for that very day. Its all God's timing.Right now, I'm unemployed and trying to find how to pay for my bills. I tithe when I receive money from any source. The Lord knows my heart. I know He would never leave or forsake me. Maybe this is just a test of my faith /trust in Him.

Sheila says 2.6.2011, 05:43 a.m.

I know Jesus and love Him. I have colon cancer and am getting ready to go through chemo and radiation, surgery, and more chemo/radiation. I am scared and really dread it. I know I shouldn't be. I know the Lord understands my weakness. I won't be able to get through this without Him. I request your prayers. Thanks.

Thank you for your words of wisdom. I always look to your preaching for some inspiration. Recently our church ran our pastor of three years away. Just a small faction of about 45 people pushed away a man of God leaving us in a place of flux and uncertainty. The pastor prior to that was there two years and split the church. The pastor before that was there nearly 20 years and was run off. I know the devil is at work. Please pray for my church and those of us who are still trying to make a difference.

Thank you for every wonderful thing that you have done Dr Billy Graham. I saw you many years ago at Henderson, Auckland, NZ. I was so surprised that you would go to a such small place. We were very Blessed. For the past 10-20 years my life has been like living in Psalms or Job. I am trying to have more Faith and love in my heart which in turn has brought happiness, peace and joy. Your words of encouragement are wonderful. May God Bless you.

BRENDA says 2.2.2011, 2:02 p.m.

Dr. Billy Graham, what a blessing you are to God and His Kingdom. This article brought me to tears. I began a new business in hopes that it will only help humanity, spent a lot of money for a big seminar but so far no clients. I prayed in earnest about this venture before undertaking it, and felt sure that this was the right thing to do. Now I don't know. This does not mean that I doubt God and his answer, but I do doubt myself. Thank you, for this article, it has helped me greatly - I now feel that all things in God's time not my time. May your light shine forever for the glory of our Father in Heaven and his son Jesus Christ - I am but a small candle - but trying to be better everyday. Also, I hope to meet you one day. I look at you and your program on T.V. every chance I get and when I know it is on. May God bless and keep you. You have so inspired me. I thank God for you.

Dear Dr Graham, I thank God for this message through you. I am planning to deliver this message in a Rehab center to which I will be preaching in a fortnight's time. My last message to them was about 2nd coming and this message is about 2nd coming and encouragement. Your practical aspect of every message is what encourages us as christians edified by the words delivered by God to you. Praying for your health and well being. Thanks - John

To Dianne,Your words to Rev. Graham spoke to my heart, as well. The pains in life are temporary; I have to remember that. I have enjoyed BGEA since I was a young girl, then saw him in Cleveland, Ohio and that was a thrill. I will keep holding on to Billy's words and the Bible's scriptures. Thank you.

Dianne says 1.30.2011, 6:07 p.m.

Thank you Billy Graham for following the Lord's call on your life. If it was not for you I would not be saved and going to heaven. I've been discouraged many times since my conversion, and the verse that always helped me is:"My grace is sufficient for you" (I'm making it a habit of personalizing scriptures). The Lord has carried me through many adversities in my life, many times he just walked beside me. I, like yourself Mr. Graham, are encouraged that whatever I'm going through won't last forever, and I look forward to going to heaven. I often pray for you Mr. Graham regarding your illness and missing your lovely wife. I admit I'll cry when you are no longer with us, but on the other hand, I'll rejoice knowing that the Lord will say to you: "Well done, faithful servant", plus you'll see your wife, family members and friends who have gone before you. Thank you for this article. I'll never meet you but I'm sending you big hugs.

Merry says 1.29.2011, 11:19 a.m.

I have two adult sons with beautiful families. We exchange Christmas gifts and pleasantries - but I fully realize I am on only the periphery of their lives. I was a single mother for many years and did the best I could, but yes.... I made some mistakes, perhaps no worse than other moms, perhaps a little worse. I carry a tremendous amount of guilt in my heart. I met with each son and apologized for not always being present with their needs. Tears streamed down my face as I spoke to each son. I asked for forgiveness; I don't know if they gave it. One son is in California with his family; I have seen his son just three times (that son is now 3) and my 18 month old granddaughter just once. They don't invite me to their home. I was not and am not a monster, but feel that is how I am perceived. They acknowledge I loved and cared for them very much. ANYWAY, the pain is sometimes debilitating. As I was pondering life this morning, the thought of suicide again entered my mind. What other way is their to escape the pain of being rejected by one's own children? I keep praying that my sons and their wives will grow to understand me, but that isn't happening. They're polite, but not loving. They are my family, my flesh and blood, but I am not a priority in their life. This is the punishment I carry for the times I failed them as a mother, I know that. I have prayed and prayed and prayed to our Lord, but this problem doesn't get any better. The pain is awful.

I join the ranks of those who thank you for this article. I am fighting becoming discouraged about the sale of our house. In addition, my son has been unemployed for many, many months now with no prospects in sight. This was an encouragement to me.

Thank you for the advice about discouragement. Since last April, I have been dealing with two ladies in my neighborhood harassing me. Had to call the police to patrol the street last Saturday. I have been very discouraged but I have faith and trust that God has something good in store for me. You are truly a blessing to this world.

Jeff says 1.26.2011, 2:59 p.m.

Billy Graham, Thank you for pointing us to Christ first and foremost. It is sometimes hard to understand why suffering is part of our journey with Christ. We can know about the truth but it is a different thing to experience it. As I read your article and these posts I am drawn away from my own disappointment and discouragement with a strong desire to pray for individuals who have posted about their own suffering. I am brought to tears by some of the posts but there is an overwhelming joy that Christ is with us as we suffer. Billy your steadfast reliance on Gods word is such an encouragement and I thank God for you and your lifetime of diligence, you truly have reflected Christ with your life and the ripples in the pond of your life will continue to affect others until Christs return. Thank you!

This word about rising above discouragement was timely for me. I have been walking with the Lord for about 40 years and love Him dearly. And I KNOW He is faithful. Still, in the midst of a dark valley, it is easy to lose focus and get discouraged. Thanks for the great reminder!!! GOD IS ON THE THRONE!!!

Thank you, to God and to you for His word. I was feeling very discouraged about my future. I was feeling very lonely, missing my daughter who went home with the Lord in Oct. 2010 and I just happened to check my e-mail (which I never do often) and found this one from BEGA. I read the sermon and it has really encouraged me to go on no matter what life throws at me because God is always with me and loves me and has a plan for me. Please pray for me....

When I started reading this passage in time I remembered my time in the North Carolina mountains. They were and are still the place for my heart, mind and soul. Remembering that there is life after death among the majestic sights and sounds of water fallls and mountain sun rises and sun sets and when there was no moon up there the countless number of stars that I've seen will last forever in my mind even thou I'm not there, I am there.

Deanna says 1.25.2011, 06:13 a.m.

Dear LuAnn, I will be praying for you. God DOES love you. I know how you feel. I had a two year desert experience, a major crisis of my faith. I was angry with God, but during my desert time, God was writing my testimony of faith. Don't give up. Don't lose your faith. Go somewhere and pour your heart out to God, share everything about what you are feeling and going through. God wants you to be real with Him. And remember that we can't see around the bend, but God can. He works out everything for good for those that love Him. I've seen it happen in my own life. Some major problems are still with us, but my burden is lightened. God is so awesome!!

I believe in God and have never had this good feeling that everyone talks about-I try to live right and want nothing more than to go home to be with Jesus when my time comes. Please Pray for me!

Your messages are a true blessing. Thank you for shining a light in the darkness for a lot of people. May God continue to use you and your ministry to reach and minister to so many people. It was through one of your crusades that my mother was saved. She told us the story many times.

Dear Dr. Graham, Thank you for your words of encouragement and hope. I lost my husband almost two years ago and am still having a very difficult time coping. I had a little pet dog who was always by my side in helping me to cope, but he has now unexpectedly passed away. I am devastated and my loneliness has bercome worst. Why did God take my little buddy from me? I was starting to feel better. I cry every day. Could you tell me why HE took my little comforter from me? Please!

Tom says 1.24.2011, 1:48 p.m.

Dr. Graham, I gave my life to Christ after reading your informative book "How To Be Born Again." I gave it to my wife, and she gave her life to Christ too! We are both now retired, and my health is declining. My health problems are discouraging at times. But I just finished reading your wonderful book, "The Journey." I loved it. I believe that book, as well as this article, was put into my hands by God to help me through this. How wonderful Jesus is. In spite of our worldly problems, it is such a blessing to know that He has everything under control, and someday, we will live and be with Him forever. God bless you!

I have been a minister for many years, and was recently released from my position in an agency with our state denomination only because of funding. I am in my late 50's and finding a church or group that wants a more experienced minister is difficult. Thank you for your encouraging words, today. Even those who serve the Lord need to be reminded of His promises from time to time.

Hello Dr Graham, I always loved what I learned when you were last here in Minneapolis, MN. I miss your crusades in MN. I wish they were here yearly. I love your messages, yet it is so unfortunate, so many people in this USA, refuse, reject Jesus Christ, to go with their own understanding, so sad indeed. Our country is a total mess, all because of this sin, evil ruling my country; as I say, the greed, corruption, arrogance, and stupidity. I hope many more of our leaders of this USA, start hearing the word of Jesus Christ; they need it. Please enjoy your retirement my friend, M.A.B. Richfield, MN

It is amazing how God has let one man spread his word to so many people. Loved your book "Angels Among Us". I will note here that there is a song by a Christian Rock group called The Swirling Eddies, released about ten years ago, and was called "Billy"- It is on their album "Out Door Elvis. This song relates how they love Billy Graham for several reasons. I wish Billy could hear it. It would put a smile on his face. I LOVE you Billy.

Billy Graham, Tell me how am I supposed to believe in God when my entire life has been filled with nothing but disappointment, let down, discouragement. Abuse, violence, anger, bitterness. The more I try to do good. The more I suffer and feel punished. I thought I was supposed to feel Gods Love? I gave up believing that's its actually true a long time ago. God certainly doesn't love me. I know in my heart that is true.

David says 1.23.2011, 5:50 p.m.

I needed that. Thanks Billy for helping me to take my focus off my present situation, and to get me back to the bigger reality that God has it all in hand, and this life may dump us on our faces, but God wants to lift up our faces to him in this life, and will raise us up to be with him in the next life. I would still like to be beyond this present situation, but God and Christ are right in it, here and now, with me, and that is a great comfort. Thanks Billy.

For Sandra, I Pray for you. I totally understand. I felt kinda the same way reading this: yes, people go through trials, but for some of us they last a lifetime, one after another. It is completely overwhelming. Some of us don't have support. Chronic, life threatening illness, among other things is draining. Constant trips to the hospital...and maybe even deep childhood pain that has never been dealt with. Sandra, you may need to seek out a support group or something like that. That's what I've been thinking myself. I feel so overwhelmed sometimes. But the message did help some. GOD Bless all. IT WILL BE WORTH IT AFTER ALL.

Timely words indeed - for who among us does not have a reason to be discourged. As often happens, God uses his messenger, the beloved Dr. Billy Graham to make the discouragement bearable. Thank you.

Thank you Rev. Graham for a beautiful and inspiring message. You are without a doubt the greatest evangelist of our times. Your message has always been clear; you have raised a wonderful family because Ruth was by your side. Your sermons have always and still are inspiring. One of my lifelong dreams was to meet you in person to shake your hand and say "thank you, Dr. Graham for all of the years you have inspired millions to turn to our Lord." May God bless you and keep you.

Gilmar says 1.22.2011, 7:31 p.m.

May The Lord keep on blessing you, your family and your ministry. God used you when I gave my heart to Jesus in Paris, France, on September 27, 1986. At that time, I was dissapointed, discouraged, and had no meaning in life. Yes, Jesus was, is and will be the only One who can turn our dark clouds into daylight. His only love can fill us with hope and peace to face life today and tomorrow. Blessings to all of you!!!

I've been discouraged these last couple of weeks because I didn't get the job I was sure I was going to get. I've felt angry, sad, anxious and unworthy. This article has filled me with a lot of joy. It's helped me think about the Lord's mercy and how he never leaves our side. I've learned that the world will try to break you but on the Lord will always lift you up.

I thank God that Jesus saved my life. Yes, I've been deeply depressed and horribly discouraged. When I cried out to God, He began working in my life. He dissolved the depression and ongoing discouragement. I know, without a doubt, Jesus saved my life. I am now a Christian disciple. Thank you Jesus. Thank you Billy Graham for spreading the gospel. And I thank Franklin and the rest of the BGEA crew for continuing their work for Christ. Halleluia!

Donna says 1.22.2011, 10:13 a.m.

Thank you for your words today. I have been discouraged due to a relationship, or lack of, with my adult son who now lives with me. He is not a Christian and I am trying more and more every day to follow God. I also seem to struggle with trying to do it all by myself, when I need to always turn my troubles over to God. I pray that if I continue to pray that he will follow God one day that our relationship can be restored. Being unemployed for 2 yrs and depression that is not being treated it is a challenge to live fully every day. I really need any/all prayers and to keep Satan out of my life. Thank you for all your words of encouragement.

Edward says 1.22.2011, 09:52 a.m.

Thank you Dr Graham for continuing to minister to the World to believers. Yes, life is all too often dark, gloomy and an uphill struggle, however, the words you bring give understanding, hope and encouragement for all believers struggling with the trials and difficulties in their lives. Your analogy of the upperside and underside of clouds reminds me of the one the great Corrie Ten Boom used concerning embroidery; the side we see being tatty, the one God sees being clear, neat and perfect.

Judy says 1.22.2011, 09:43 a.m.

Today this is just what I needed. I was in extreme sorrow yesterday over the loss of a finger on my hand, and God helped me to know I am not alone, that He is working as I get my mind off of me and put it onto His work in ministry. Thank you, Jesus.

Tony Evans says 1.22.2011, 07:08 a.m.

Speaking from experience... Please, Don't ignore the support of family and friends or seek out friends if you have none! But more importantly don't be afraid to seek professional help... Doctors and counselors all do Gods work... Changes in nutrition and or medication with professional support can really help you on life's journey also.

Tony Evans says 1.22.2011, 06:55 a.m.

Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.Who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Vicki says 1.22.2011, 06:48 a.m.

Great words of exhortation from the one that has been enriched with the capacity to rightly divide the word of truth. Every teaching must convey a lot of new lessons or strengthen faith to any one who really cares to be spiritually taught and spiritually guided to understand. We learn everyday. I have learnt a lot from Brother Billy Graham. God has really used him to bless many souls. Thank You for encouraging us to pray and study the Word so that we would not be discouraged for long. God has taken me through several clouds in my life, and in those seasons, the book of Job was my consolation. If God could turn around Job, my case is small. God is always faithful in my walk with Him, encouraging me, directing me and reproofing me when needed. Now I stand on His promises, especially Hebrews 13:5 and the coming of His dear Son, Jesus Christ. Glory to God!

Dearest Mr. Graham. I have read your pure inspirational words for years now, and you always have not only divine inspirational words, but also timing. It is now all around us a world enveloped in dark clouds. Just think of a place on earth right now that something horrible is not going on. But on the opposite side of that darkness is the Eternal Light, Omnipotence, Omnipresence, Omniscience of our God. You have a way of reminding the world, that He is always there. "Even to the end of the World". God Speed Mr. Graham

Thank you Pastor Graham for your encouraging words. I have been struggling with the concept of discouragement and faith for the last week. I have been praying too for God to lessen my anxiety and he has, but my human nature takes over and I am down in the dumps again. But your words and the scriptures talked to me and I have renewed hope that God knows all and there is a great purpose for what I'm going through. I know others who are going through much worse. I am going to print out this article to share and leave it in the breakroom at my work. I think everyone has "clouds" in their lives but like you said even the clouds have their purpose. God bless you.

Coralee says 1.21.2011, 11:58 p.m.

Thanks, Pastor Billy. I followed your crusades on tv as a child and at 23 gave my life to Christ. My life has never been the same since. My dearest son of 24 who was a police officer, while on antidepressants, took his and his fiances lives almost 5 years ago now. I never thought my husband and I could live through this tragedy. But, the Lord has held our hearts and hands and we are trying to keep our eyes on the coming of our precious Savior Jesus Christ and seeing our dear Ronnie again, as he also was a believer. These posts are especially encouraging. Thank you and God bless you.

So what can a person do when you've had a year of multiple crises, and no matter how much I pray I still cannot find lasting relief, peace, contentment. God comes to me, but is letting me 'sit' in one swirling tumultuous event after another. From a tornado/losing my home/being homeless to the sudden death of a young family member...financial loss, medical bills to unable to find work that is in my scope of knowledge and the only one I can find is a 2 hour drive away. I feel like I'm in a sea battering me against the rocky shoreline.

James says 1.21.2011, 10:31 p.m.

I thank you, Dr. Graham. I am always trying to learn what and how the Lord is working in my life. I also want to sense His direction. I will try to remember that discouragement is the opposite of faith. I sometimes struggle with the verse that says for our hearts not to be troubled, for I go to prepare a place for you ....... I feel if I am ready to meet my Maker at the end of this life, that might be easier to not be troubled. I don't want to keep writing, so I'll wrap it up. I think at times, am I supposed to focus entirely on Jesus or both this world and the kingdom? God bless.

I was off work for six years and was in the hospital for 10 months and part of that 10 months was 3 months of rehab from medication that caused neurological toxicity from a liver transplant I had. I lost 90 pounds and my ability to talk, walk, or all the rest of daily living activities. At age 58 I went back to work even though my neurologist advised me not to. I was on life support three different times and I asked God to take me home. He told me to pick my mat up and start walking which I did through rehab. I have a multitude of health issues still, however God's Grace is sufficient even in the darkest times. Thank you Jesus and I will put on the garments of Praise for the spirit of heaviness.

Nancy says 1.21.2011, 10:04 p.m.

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved to look at clouds. When I was a young child, in my childlike mind, I used to think they were part of God’s angels and they were keeping watch over all of the earth. I find clouds fascinating at each time of year because of their varying different types which seem to change with the seasons. I really enjoy how they sometimes just hang in the sky or watching as they move across it imagining about where the clouds came from and where they are headed. Since your message talks about clouds I was captivated and especially because of how you intertwined it our faith. Thank you, Dr. Graham, for sharing it and for the encouragement you continue to faithfully bring.

Shae says 1.21.2011, 9:45 p.m.

Thank you Dr. Graham. I certainly needed to read this today. Some things I've had to deal with personally have about knocked me down and out, but your words to look to Jesus pointed me in the right direction. May God continue to richly bless you and your family.

This writing is very timely for what we are going through. Our 98 1/2 year old Christian mom is fighting to overcome a broken hip and arm. Until the fall she was totally self-reliant; drove hersef to church every Sunday, also to do her own grocery shopping, and cooking meals. Our hearts are sad that she may not come back to the fullness of life she once had, but she knows she is saved and has led a long, peaceful life. We've never known a person like her. She has never known a day of disappointment, has never been bored and waits patiently every day, especially to watch her favorite Gaither singers. We pray that we can find the peace she has always known in Christ. God Bless your ministry and our mom.

Bonnie says 1.21.2011, 9:22 p.m.

The other day I was asked who inspired me the most and you immediately came to mind because all my life (I'm 69) I have admired, trusted, and looked up to you because of your spotless testimony, faithfulness, and love for the Lord and His Word. I too have had moments of intense discouragement and this is exactly what I needed today. Thank you! As always you come through for us by God's gracious and tender leading. Oh, that we had more like you! But at least the Lord gave us one that has left a positive imprint in our hearts and in our lives. May the Lord continue to bless you and your ministry. I pray that He touches your body with His healing touch and give you ease and comfort. Thank you so much for all you've done for the masses in the Lord's Name and by His wonderful Grace. You are indeed a true servant of God who has taken His message of hope around the globe. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the inspiration you've been to me and for the hope that you have given to me through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Linda says 1.21.2011, 9:04 p.m.

Thank You, Billly, for this heartfelt message. Thank you for the reminder that all is well for all who believe in our Heavenly, saving, glorious Lord Jesus Christ. From long ago and far away in Sunday School days comes the message...trust and obey, for there's no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. You and your ministry will never be forgotten. May God Bless You and Yours, Billy

Jeanie says 1.21.2011, 8:55 p.m.

Thank you for this wonderful message. Today I experience my intergrity being questioned because of an negative outcome that was no fault of my own. These people made me feel stupid and incompetent even though everything pointed to faults of their own. I wondered where God was in all of this and now I know he was with me in the storm of darkness and things will be okay. I was in darkness, depressed and feeling like crying. God will carry me through this.

Chris says 1.21.2011, 8:52 p.m.

The year was 1981 - Brother Graham, you were holding a revival in Spokane, WA at Joe Albi stadium. I was 14 and touched by your message. Little did I know, standing in the same stadium was my future wife, she was 13 and gave her life to Christ that night! Even though we lived three hours apart we were to finally meet seven years later in Spokane at college. We have been married 21 years now and we both are still touched by your words and ministry! Thank you for saying YES to God's call on your life Brother Graham. It's because of your obedience to His call to ministry that my bride is a child of God - our family serves Him to this day and we give God praise for you brother!

Meg says 1.21.2011, 8:39 p.m.

For the past few weeks I have been struggling to find answers not only for myself but my young adult children. Your message was timely. I hit delete on alot of messages and for some reason read your reflection. You are a prophet in today's fast paced unpredictable world. Peace and blessings to you.

Marcella says 1.21.2011, 8:36 p.m.

I have been struggling with depression and all this past week could only think how much I wanted to die. My heart has been so heavy with all my physical, emotional, mental and spiritual struggles. Went to church this evening and two friends prayed for me - got home and here was this article. Thank you.

Bobbiejean says 1.21.2011, 8:33 p.m.

Just today I said to God, I am going to request a visitation with Billy Graham. I need to talk with him. God has put something in my heart for a few decades, all he said to pass prior has, but not much of me left. I needed to talk to you. I live in Charlotte and thought maybe it would be possible. Then I open my email and here you are, confirming what another preacher sent me a letter one yesterday afternoon, Trinity Broadcast Praise the Lord, confirmed in the last 20 minutes of the two hr event last night... now You..."Wait on the Lord". I'm trying, more than me depends on this, please pray for me. God Bless You, Your Family and all of BGEA! -me

We have suffered for over two years. We began to be blessed financially, health, and in all areas. In my heart, I began to ponder that this could all come to an end as fast as it came. And it is. But God had prepared my heart. What a timely message this is, and How Great, and Faithful Our God is! Worthy are you Father of all praise! Through whatever we go through.

Roger Rali says 1.21.2011, 8:25 p.m.

Stunningly impressive. "Everything happens for the good of those who love him and those whom He called for his own purpose" Discouragement, humiliation, adversity a few to name has all being conquered by Our Everlasting Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As admonished. it very import know the bible, history and life to be on the victorious side all times. If only we know ourselves and our enemy very well live will be triumph in every circumstances. Like Jesus. He knows himself very well as a King, the son of Living God, and besides knows well his rival including his maneuver towards man " The devil comes only to still kill and destroy" (John 10:10) for he is living on numbered days "because the ruler of this world has already being judged" (John 16:11). So the challenge more we seek gee first the Kingdom within ourselves (Luke 17 20-21) and its righteousness to define the product man and study Devil with his plans, tricks, tactics, so that we reign as Kings here on this earthly realm by fulfilling and manifesting the Fathers Heavenly Kingdom and will on Earth just like it is in Heaven. Amen

I praise God for you, Billy, and thank Him for your faithfulness to the Bible. As a fifteen-year-old I sang in the choir at your crusade in Brisbane, Australia, in 1959. God touched my heart then and I was blessed again just now reading your article. Truly, "the clouds are the dust of His feet" (Nahum 1:3).

God's timing, as always, is perfect. I have been so discouraged, and had pretty much given up. I quit going to church, quit reading His Word, my prayer life is fairly non-existant; I have let the joy-robbers have free reign in my life. I believe the Holy Spirit prompted me to read this e-mail today, and I feel as though a weight has been lifted from me. Praise God for your faithfulness and leadership, Dr. Graham.

After being a widow for almost a year and a half, you'd think I'd be OK by now, and actually have been doing really well. However, today I actually felt the pangs of discouragement. I've kept busy with errands and things that need doing here at home, but needing a break, sat down in front of the computer with a prayer to God that there would be an email from somebody. Praise the Lord, there was the BGEA UPDATE w. the article "Rising Above Clouds of Discouragement" from Billy Graham. "...or you may be suffering discouragement and bereavement." It was like this article was directed right at me. Thank you Lord, and thank you, Billy Graham.

William says 1.21.2011, 7:25 p.m.

A good Word! I have often thought that same thing~ that when the skies are gloomy, the sun is still shining above them. And when our situation looks bleak, God is still hovering over us, loving us and nurturing us to the next step He has for us.

Debi says 1.21.2011, 7:06 p.m.

Thank you so much. I had prayed for the Lord to help me since my husband of 24 years left me 2 weeks before Christmas for a woman he had been talking to on the internet. I am so totally crushed and there was my answer and blessing in your words of encouragement. Everyone keep me in your prayers as this one is pretty tough for me. Thanks Debi in Iowa

I admit I don't always read these emails. It seems that I get so many lately. Something compelled me to look before I deleted. Guess what? God knew just what I needed to hear from is willing servant. Why have I been discouraged? 1) No regular prayer time.2) Neglect of the reading of the Word.3) Lack of faith due to not exercising it.

I've been a long time follower of Rev. Billy Graham and heard he's in poor health and was wondering how he's doing?

Sister says 1.21.2011, 5:23 p.m.

Thank you, Pastor Billy, for painting such a beautiful picture of what goodness (that is beyond our imagining) is intended for us by our Lord. I wonder if you might address the issue of knowing the clouds that seem to be suffocating you are the result of either your own foolish decisions/mistakes or a wrong perspective. I have trouble sometimes accepting that God will make all things work for my good when my troubles are from my own errors (though I have indeed repented of them and trust that God has forgiven me). Thank you so much for your faithful service to our Lord....I look very forward to meeting you in Heaven one day! God bless you always!

Ginny says 1.21.2011, 4:58 p.m.

I gave my heart to Jesus when I was 4 and surrendered my life to Christ at the age of 12. From that point on Christ has led me in paths I never expected - one was a husband who was a pastor and had a woman on the west coast for 4 years and I never knew it. I raised 4 children by myself and at the age of 53 adopted twins who needed a home. I was so discouraged today because of continuing darkness from time to time in my life, I am 69 - I read this article on the internet and was helped tremendously with thoughts and reminders I already knew but somehow got lost in my dark clouds. I have learned to sing in the darkness I was just really having trouble today finding a starting note.

Robin says 1.21.2011, 4:51 p.m.

This message today is something I needed in my dark and unhappy days. I am grateful for the words of encouragement.

Donald says 1.21.2011, 4:45 p.m.

Light is the opposite of darkness. Energy is the opposite of apathy. Faith is the opposite of fear. Hope is the opposite of depression. Love is the opposite of hate. I like to sew as much light as I can in my website. I also dearly miss the gospel light and energy that Billy Graham and GB Shea would bring in their ministry.

Sandra says 1.21.2011, 1:40 p.m.

What an impactful message! I just wish I could "feel" it. I am struggling right now with deep dispar and feelings of heaviness in my soul. I don't understand it. I've prayed, studied the Bible, spoken to friends at church asking for prayer, and I do know Jesus as my Saviour and I do have faith in him. I still can't seem to totally relax and "let go" so to speak. I have soooo much going on in my life and I feel like I am sinning since I have feelings of anxiousness and sometimes fear. Issues:(Disabled husband, no jobs in family, 17 year old son rebeling, financial issues, and my house is falling apart with no way to repair it! Oh and my grandson may need surgery on his head). I just feel like everything happens to me. I know God can handle it (he did for Job) I just can't relax. Even though I pray and give it to God, my stomach is still in knots. What am I doing wrong? How do I totally let go? It sounds easy, but it's not. I just can't seem to stop thinking about everything.

Donita says 1.19.2011, 10:07 p.m.

Men and women in the bible faced real life situations like we all do. It is encouraging to know that we can be real and honest and admit when we are discouraged. With renewed HOPE and faith, I am looking up again from my own place of discouragement. No matter what we are going through, we have God's grace and mercy. We don't have to earn it. I am grateful that I am a daughter of the King and that God is greater than our enemy. Thank you for sharing God's heart.

Diane says 1.19.2011, 4:46 p.m.

Thank you so much for this, Pastor Graham. I have watched your teachings for many years and they are full of fire for God - you never run cold..My husband and I have been going through a difficult time with one disappointment after another and it can get so tough. Reading this, though, has strengthened me and I have strength to keep going because you have reminded me that I need to look at Jesus and this world will fade away...We truly are blessed to have you shine that torch for Jesus...God bless you

My prayer is that God Almighty continues to keep you for the good work until God's enemies become your foot-stool. Amen

I m single parent with 5 children having 4 different fathers. I adopted one child, I became born again but had many problems. The fathers of the children never supported the children and I had no hope. One Sunday I turned a radio on and had your sermon on discouragement and it has helped me to grow stronger and stronger in faith. Ever Sunday and 9.00 pm East Africa I listen to your programs. Please pray for me to stand strong in faith and pray for my six children to know Jesus Christ. Thank you for this ministry I have already bought many of the books written by BGEA. Thank you
