Christian Artists Unite to Bring 'Healing4Haiti'

March 1, 2010 - A diverse group of Christian musicians, led by Michael W. Smith, are helping bring relief and comfort to earthquake survivors by contributing their talents to an album called Healing4Haiti. Download from iTunes or order the CD Today!

Franklin Graham was in India just days after the earthquake struck Haiti when his cell phone rang. It was about 2 in the morning: “Michael W. was calling me, saying, ‘Franklin, I’m producing this song for Haiti and we want to give you some of the proceeds to help down there. What do you need? How can we help you?’

“From that one song,” said Franklin during a recent radio interview, “we went back to Michael W. and said, ‘There are some people who have helped us in our Crusades—different bands. What would happen if each band gave a song, and we made an album?’"

The result, "Healing4Haiti," is designed to bring relief and comfort to earthquake survivors. It includes "Come Together Now," a song written by Smith, David Mullen, and Cindy Morgan.

Produced by Integrity Music, the benefit compilation also includes songs from Flyleaf, Israel Houghton, DecembeRadio, Hawk Nelson, The Afters, Canton Jones, Lecrae, Lincoln Brewster and more.

“It’s a great album,” Franklin added. “It’s got some great music, and the artists—what they did is they went through their music, and they hand-selected songs that they thought would fit. These songs fit for the healing of Haiti. Tommy Coomes, Integrity Music did an outstanding job in bringing this together and putting it in the right order. It’s going to be powerful."

Another thing that makes this project special, said Franklin, is that Michael and the others have actually gone to Haiti. “They’ve gone down there to see it for themselves so they can come back and tell others how they can be a part of helping.”

"What I saw while in Haiti is something we must keep in front of the minds and hearts of Americans," said Smith. "The recovery efforts are going to take a long, long time so we want do anything we can to raise awareness and to continue to support organizations doing good work in Haiti."

A Long-Term Effort
Franklin detailed the work that the BGEA Rapid Response Team and Samaritan's Purse are doing in Haiti: “We’re building houses. We’re providing clean water. We’re providing medicine. We’re doing food distribution. We’ve got chaplains working in some of the hardest-hit areas, praying with people, counseling people, just listening to their story and trying to comfort them."

He went on to share the heartbreaking reality he recently saw: “There is not enough equipment in the country to dismantle the concrete slabs so bodies can be retrieved. It’s sad. It just breaks your heart when you sit there and you’re talking to a pastor, and he points to his house behind him, and he’s got his wife and seven kids in that building. He can’t get them out, and they’re entombed in there, and he has to look at it everyday. It just breaks your heart."

According to Franklin, the greatest need is spiritual. “That’s why we’re there," he said. We want the men and women of Haiti to know that God loves them, that God has not forgotten them. He hasn’t turned His back on them.

“My prayer is that God will use Healing4Haiti to touch the hearts of this nation to give generously to the suffering people of Haiti," Franklin said.
