Tens of Thousands Accept Jesus in Uruguay
On the final night of the Festival of Hope, the crowd in Charrua Stadium overflowed into the parking lot. Close to 24,000 people came and almost 1,800 made life-changing decisions for Christ. “This is historic. We’ve never seen anything like this and the church here is excited,” said Ernesto Dueck, a missionary who was born and raised in Uruguay, helped lead the My Hope project in Uruguay and also served on the Festival’s local executive committee.

Jesus said, "Let the children come to me." On Saturday morning in Montevideo, Uruguay, thousands did just that. A sea of faces—bright and eager—lined the bleachers and field at Charrua Stadium. More than 25,000 parents, children and youth groups packed the stands.

A Harvest of Souls in Uruguay
They came by the thousands to hear the Good News and Franklin Graham did not disappoint. More than 13,000 heard the Gospel in Montevideo on Friday night—and 879 made decisions for Christ. Young and old they came. Some in their teens; some, like Palmira Pimienta, in their 80s. Palmira not only came to the Festival, she is serving as a counselor.

One newscaster said it well: "This is historic. It is the first time our channel is transmitting live from a Christian event in Uruguay." In a nation known for secularism, the Festival of Hope with Franklin Graham is making a huge impact. Among the opening night crowd of 9,500, approximately 815 people made decisions for Christ.

Conversations about God
As the Festival de Esperanza kicks off in Montevideo this evening, it will be the first time many in Uruguay will hear about the love of Jesus Christ. Alexis Medina, senior pastor of Centro Cristiano del Cordon, says that Uruguay is different from other Latin American countries. It is more European. Most people who live here are from Italian or Spanish heritage.

Although Uruguay often is labeled agnostic or atheist, a fresh openness to the Gospel is sprouting. Maybe it began in 1962, when the Billy Graham team stopped here on a tour of South America. The seeds certainly took root with My Hope in 2007 and are being watered by people this week – passing out fliers across Montevideo for the Festival of Hope with Franklin Graham.
