Pass the Bible Please

Pass the Bible Please

The four have just come from the North Charleston Coliseum, where they were briefed on how to counsel inquirers at the Lowcountry Franklin Graham Festival.

The thought of leading people to Christ reminds Dewey and Nancy of the years they prayed for Margie and Bill to accept Christ back in the 1970s and ’80s.

“My wife and his wife are sisters,” Dewey says. “[Bill and Margie] were polite. They would invite us to their house. But they hadn’t come to the Lord yet, so they’d put their alcohol out of sight.”

Bill was a hard man to talk to, so Dewey tried to reach him in other ways.

“When God saved me in ’72, I was a drunk,” Dewey says. “I was just like Bill. I didn’t want to hear anything about God and church. So I understood him.”

Dewey gave Bill a Bible, with Psalm 1:1 handwritten in the front: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful” (KJV).

After about eight years, Margie came to Christ. Bill came two years later.

“We were sitting in church one Sunday, and Bill passed a Bible down to me,” Dewey says. “He said, ‘Remember this?’ It was that same Bible I’d given to him almost 10 years earlier to the day.”

Dewey helped Bill learn how to share his faith, and immediately Bill caught the fire.

“He still has that fervency,” Dewey says. “They’ve been on several mission trips with us. He’s very bold. He’ll witness to anybody. He would witness to a fence post.”

In fact, a trip to the store to pick up bread for his wife could take as long as three hours, but Margie doesn’t complain, or worry.

“I just figure he’s found someone to talk to and he’s sharing his faith,” Margie says. “That’s a pretty amazing way to feel about your husband.”
